Belgian qualifier Steve Darcis, ranked #297, in his first ATP event of the year and with a career ATP record of 0-2, reached the final of the Dutch Open after beating Marc Gicquel(#39), Gilles Simon (#51), Igor Andreev (#54) and Mikhail Youzhny (#13)!!!
He is facing Austrian Werner Eschauer ranked #66 in the final. He is the lowest ranked oppent that Darcis will face in the tournament.
If he wins he will be one of the lowest ranked players ever to win an ATP event.
Here is some more firsts: Eschauer is trying to win his first ATP title at age 33
AMERSFOORT, Netherlands (AP) -- Austria's Werner Eschauer and Belgian qualifier Steve Darcis advanced Saturday to the final of the Dutch Open, the first time either will play for a championship.
Eschauer at 33 has a chance to become the oldest first-time winner on the tour since 2005 when Wayne Arthurs won in Scottsdale, Arizona at 33.
Darcis, who had played only two ATP-level matches before this week and lost both, will try to become one of the lowest ranked tournament champions in at least 20 years. Darcis is ranked 297. Lleyton Hewitt is the lowest ranked winner since 1985, at 550th when he won the 1998 Adelaide title in Australia.
