it seemed like berdych wanted to play "the bad guy" in this one, he purposely did that to annoy both the crowd and Nadal. Although he did that, i can't really blame him, the fans were booing him and roaring whenever Nadal hit good point.
...I actually had a chuckle at the imitation though, it was pretty funny _________________ A fan of "that French backhand dude"

i side with nadal's quote berdych is 'very stupid'. it's madrid. what did thomas expect? that the crowd was going to help him out? i don't see baggy or benjamin becker complaining about the crowd's attitude in New York. and i believe that this crowd was in fact worse than the madrid crowd.
and what i can't understand is, thomas actually won the match. had he lost, i could see why he would be complaining, even though this would still not be justified. but he won, why not just shut up and go on? because of this incident, the crowd was a huge reason why he got crushed by gonzalez.
also, i'm not a big fan of nadal fist pumping, but at the same time i accept it because he does it to pump himself up. while hewitt does it to piss others off. and that last imitation that berdych did was purely uncalled for. that was just rude. _________________ Viva Chile
Good point about New York. In fact, when they asked Baghdatis about the crowd cheering on his errors and booing his winners he said something like: "the crowd was great! they were doing exactly what they are expected to do. I love paying in front of loud fans! It makes the game more interesting. This was an 'away' match for me"
Bottom line: Berdych was very wrong and stupid to do what he did to the crowd. I side with Nadal on this one.
I don't see any problem with imitating your opponent's celebrations. Any player is allowed to do what they want. If they thnk doing it will pump them up, then why not? After Nadal hits a very good shot and he jumps up in the air, that can be intimadting or annoying. There's no problem with the opponent doing the same thing.
there is a difference between pumping yourself up, and doing a BLATENT imitation of your opponent. the latter is trying to upset your opponent.
Nadal upsets his opponents by doing it in the first place. If Nadal does it, Berdych has every rite.
when has anbody complained about it? the only time I can remember is Ljubicic after the French, and his opinion hardly counts because he was ranting over Nadal in that presser. Nadal is considered by the players to be on of the BEST sports in tennis, finding anybody who has problems with him is hard.
Nadal clearly annoys other players when he does this. If he is going to do it, then there should be no problem with Berdych doing it aswell.
I must have missed him "clearly annoying" other players. I have yet to see any one complain over it.
Players won't complain because it's part of the game of tennis. They don't want to look stupid if they complain just because Nadal pumps himself up. Since many players do it. _________________
It's scary how predictable any tournament Federer's in is. Right now, only Nadal can really challenge him... perhaps the previous generation (Agassi, Sampras, Courier, etc.) would give him a tougher time, but right now, he's in his own league. He's basically won 75% of the past Masters Series events from the past three years. How boring. _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself

sorry, but that excuse doesn't cut it. if people had a problem with it they would say something. people complain about Hewitt, Clijsters has touched on Henin, Sharapova gets all kinds of grief from other Russians for her grunting. If people thought Nadal's Vamos were annoying, something, but someone, would have been said. _________________

But honestly, just as a question, what exactly IS the difference between say, Hewitt's "CMON!"s and Nadal's "VAMOS!"s? Not that it is to pump himself up, you have no idea if that is honestly what he is doing or if it is the opposite. But one thing is that Nadal is generally very respectful in his press conferences, Hewitt, not so much. But that doesn't automatically imply that his fist pumps are only to pump himself up, not getting in his opponent's face.
Still not answering my scenario? Interesting. I actually watched the video and I didn't think the imitation was to bad...but the silencing of the crowd is disgusting! That alone makes Berdych a bad sportsman... _________________ Tennis is in the mind...
