Feel free to discuss the Mumbai tournment here

Here's the current news from Mumbai:

Mario Ancic, currently No. 10 in the INDESIT ATP Race and a strong contender for one of six remaining qualification berths for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai, advanced to the second round of the inaugural Kingfisher Airlines Tennis Open in Mumbai on Monday.

Second-seeded Ancic beat Russian Igor Kunitsyn 6-3, 6-2 and next plays the winner of Czech Robin Vik and Italian Stefano Galvani.

Ancic will improve his INDESIT ATP Race total this week if he reaches the quarterfinals.
How the Masters Cup contenders can improve their positions this week.

Despite missing more than two months following Wimbledon due to injury, Ancic remains in the hunt for a Tennis Masters Cup berth. He is currently 35 points behind No. 6 Tommy Robredo.

Sixth-seeded Bjorn Phau recorded his 14th ATP-level victory of the season over Karan Rastogi of India 6-0, 6-3. Phau was a semifinalist in Casablanca (l. to Massu) and was a quarterfinalist in Chennai, Dubai and San Jose.

British 26-year-old James Auckland won his first ATP-level singles match over fellow qualifier Frank Moser of Germany 6-1, 6-4. Japanese veteran Gouichi Motomura earned his career-third ATP match over Jasper Smit of the Netherlands 3-6, 6-0, 7-6(5).

Big loss for Moya

Juan Martin del Potro posted the biggest win of his young career by upsetting former World No.1 Carlos Moya 6-3, 6-2 at the Kingfisher Airlines Tennis Open in Mumbai, India.

The 18-year-old Argentine, who a year ago was only No.209 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings, will into the top 100 for the first time in his career if he reaches the quarterfinals here.

Del Potro improved to 6-8 in ATP-level events and will next battle Ramon Delgado, who earned safe passage to the second round when Italian opponent Davide Sanguinetti retired after 59 minutes with gastroenteritis, while trailing Delgado 6-3, 2-1.

Another seeded player to fall was No.7 Juan Monaco who lost to Stefan Koubek 7-6(5), 6-4 in one hour and 46 minutes. The Austrian, a former Top 20 player, is currently No.118 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings.

Wesley Moodie, the No.8 seed, overcame wild card Rohan Bopanna 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 to notch his 10th win in the season. The big-serving South African will next take on qualifier James Auckland looking for a spot in his second quarterfinal of the season.

Germany’s Simon Gruel beat Yen-Hsun Lu 7-6(4), 6-3 and will next meet either No. 3 seed Tomas Berdych or Pole Lukasz Kubot in the second round.

I'm extremely surprised Moya lost. He isn't at his best anymore, but who could have thought he would lose to an unkown by that scoreline?

Top three seeds Tommy Robredo, Mario Ancic and Tomas Berdych continued their push towards a Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai berth by posting convincing wins Thursday to charge into the Kingfisher Airlines Tennis Open quarterfinals.

Top seed Robredo was the last to guarantee a spot in the last eight after overcoming Michael Berrer 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 51 minutes.

Robredo, No.6 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race, added five Race points with today's win (eight less three of his 'best fifth'). He is 39 points behing Nikolay Davydenko and nine points ahead No.7 David Nalbandian.

The Spaniard will next battle Ramon Delgado, who advanced to the quarters after Juan Martin del Potro retired with an upset stomach when trailing 3-6, 1-4.

Second-seeded Ancic needed one hour and 48 minutes to beat Stefano Galvani 6-1, 7-6(6) and advance to his tenth ATP quarterfinal in the season.

Ancic returned to competition with a bang at Beijing, reaching the final (l. to Baghdatis), after missing more than two months with back and knee injuries. He is on quite a roll as of late, winning 21 of his last 24 matches. He took his second ATP title at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in June (d. Hernych) and made the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in July (l. to Federer).

Ancic, who is No.10 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race, could jump to No.7 if he wins the title here and Blake loses before the semifinals in Bagnkok.

Fellow youngster Berdych defeated Germany’s Simon Greul 7-6(4), 6-4 in one hour and 29 minutes.

Berdych, currently No.17 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race, will add five points with his quarterfinal appearance and could finish the week in the top 15 in the Race if the claims the Mumbai title.

Berdych posted some strong results this summer – including a fourth-round showing at Wimbledon in July (l. to Federer), a semifinal appearance at Stuttgart in July (l. to Ferrer), a quarterfinal showing at Toronto in August (l. to Gasquet) and a fourth-round finish at the US Open this month (l. to Blake).

For a spot in the semifinal, Berdych will take on Bjorn Phau, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over qualifier Gouichi Motomura.

Phau, who advanced to the semifinals at Casablanca and quarterfinals in three other ATP events (Chennai, Dubai, San Jose), reached a career high INDESIT ATP Ranking of No.59 in June.

Berdych and Phau have faced each other three times (only once in ATP events) with the Czech holding a perfect 3-0 record against the German.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were No.4 seed Dmitry Tursunov and qualifier James Auckland. Tursunov posted a 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4 hard-fought win over Kristian Pless, while Auckland upset No.8 seed Wesley Moodie 7-6(3), 7-6(5).

I am not a fan of Tursunov's game. He is more or less the male version of Sharapova. I do really like Berdych though, he is almost the spitting image of Safin. He has the potential for a few Slams and a No.1 ranking.

On court, he really never seems to be very enthused to be there. Even when he hits a spectacular winner, he is not very emoted by it. Yes, he is happy and all when he hits them, but he can very quickly get negative and start shuffling and slumping his shoulders. He's a kinda odd player. He seems to be trying to slap all the balls as hard as he can.

Agreed leftys. Berdych is interesting. I think he will surprise us all either by doing amazing soon, or plummeting soon.

Russian Dmitry Tursunov will break into the Top 20 of the INDESIT ATP Rankings for the first time after winning his first ATP title in Mumbai Monday. In a final postponed from Sunday and twice interrupted by rain today, Tursunov defeated Czech Tomas Berdych 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5).

Tursunov led 4-2 in the third set but was unable to close out the match. Rain halted play for a second time at 5-5 in the third set. On resumption Tursunov broke Berdych for a 6-5 lead but was unable to serve out the match, which headed into a third-set tie-break. The Russian clinched his first ATP title with his first match point of the tie-break.

The victory capped a dramatic nine days for Tursunov, who becomes the 11th first-time title winner on the ATP circuit in 2006. Two Sundays ago Tursunov was surprisingly called into action against Andy Roddick in the fourth rubber of the Russia-USA Davis Cup semifinal. After a lackluster performance in the doubles rubber one day earlier, Tursunov, playing on his least preferred surface of clay, defeated Roddick 17-15 in the fifth set after the American, who had rallied from two sets down, served for the match at 6-5 in the fifth.

Tursunov Tales

Tursunov then raced from Moscow to the hard courts of Mumbai. The fourth seed played four consecutive three-set matches from the second round on to take the title. The title run included back-to-back victories over top seed Tommy Robredo in the semifinals and third seed Berdych in the final.

Tursunov was appearing in his second ATP final (Los Angeles 2006, l. Haas). The 23-year-old improved to 43-26 on the year, far exceeding his previous best season record of 17-15 last year. He has won 22 of his 30 matches since the beginning of Wimbledon.

Berdych, who was No. 13 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings going into Mumbai, would have ed the INDESIT ATP Rankings Top 10 for the first time had he won the title.

It was the Czech's second runner-up finish of the year, following a loss to Roger Federer in the Halle final. His two career titles have come at ATP Masters Series Paris last year (d. Ljubicic) and at Palermo in 2004 (d. Volandri).

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Tursunov: "I probably lost about 10 years of my life playing this, I think both of us were playing really, really tight and you know it was really a crap-shoot in the tie-break.

"I was up two breaks in the third set and still went to the tie-break, so it was definitely nerve wracking, but I'm really happy that I won and just really hope that it won't go into a tie-break in the third set in a finals again."

On the tournament... "The first time is always difficult to run a tournament and I don't think the organizers know what to expect and so its definitely very hard from all points, not only from players but organization and the fans. But I think for the first time it's been definitely well organized and I'm sure its going to get better and better and hopefully I will come back to defend my title next year."

Berdych: "It was amazing, waiting one more today, all day raining and then today we start at 4 o'clock, then it was up and down and then again it started to rain, and they already want to cancel the match and we go home, and all these things together it was mentally so tough, and then finally I lost 7-6 in the third, so it was a nice week but with a bad end.

"When I came after Davis Cup I thought that every day I would end up going and I booked my plane home, expecting to go every day; it's Tuesday now, so it was good."
