Venus Williams has now pulled out of the US Open:

Venus Williams withdraws from U.S. Open
August 25, 2006

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - For a second time in four years, Venus Williams will not be contesting the U.S. Open.

A two-time champion, the American on Friday pulled out of the year's final major because of continued pain in her left wrist.

Williams, who won here in 2000 and 2001, had been seeded 30th. She could have faced fourth-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva in the third round.

"I have many great memories from competing at the U.S. Open and I regret that I will not be able to participate in 2006," the 26-year-old said in a statement. "I will miss the excitement of competing in front of the New York fans at one of the premier sporting events in the world. I look forward to returning in 2007."

A five-time Grand Slam winner who also was the runner-up here in 1997 and 2002, Williams missed the 2003 Open with an abdominal injury.

First Clijsters, now Venus, the US Open is coming thinner and thinner. Not a good sign....

There's still ton a of good players still left at the open. But Venus is a terrible loss
