Why do "experts" and "oddsmakers" keep saying that Sharapova will win the next slam?(besides the FO of course) This time it is actually LOGICAL, but still, kinda iffy. 3 of the 4 "experts" said she would win the AO this year, oddsmakers gave her the best odds to win Wimbledon, and now TENNIS mag picks Sharapova to win the USO! Rolling Eyes

both TENNIS Mag. and ESPN are beyond bias for her. She could break both her legs and she is still the favorite to them,"While injured, Masha still has all the fighting spirit of the top 100 combined. Look for an emotional second Major for her as she fights through the pain to win in a wheelchair, with an Olympian effort."

With just a wk. to go, I can't remember a USO so wide open and with so many ? marks. I really don't care much about the women's game after so few of the top players have shown so little respect for the game.
But even the men's field is wide, wide open. Fed is the favorite but it wouldn't shock me if he got beat. I think he should have played more after Wimbledon, but maybe he felt that he needed to recharge his batteries before entering the last major. I don't think Nadal can be that confident going in to NY, but at least he'll be fresher than he was last yr. I think as many as 16 guys, depending on the draw, could reach the semis and maybe as many as 8 different players could reach the final. It's that wide open. Who would have thought outside of Fed that Gasquet, Ferrero, and Roddick would be the finalists at the last 2 TMS. I'm very interested to see who steps up and challenges for the last major.

I agree with beachjim...this U.S. Open is wide-open on the women's side.

I still think Fed's gonna take it hands down...he just plays so well at the big events.

the same could be said for Nadal, I would pick Nadal to win against Federer in any important event. Nadal always raises his game against Federer, always. Federer has looked weak this USO Series, alot of tight three setters. I could easily see Nadal, Blake, Gasquet, Berdych, Gonzalez, or Tursanov beat him. It is more than foolhardy to say he will win it easily.

Wimbledon PSALT, Wimbledon! Laughing Just kidding because, it's on grass. But still, Federer AND Nadal have looked far from stunning this USO. Not sure if either can make it to the final. I personally wouldn't mind seeing a final which both Federer and Nadal weren't in it.

I would like that aswell, it hasen't happened since the A.Open in 2005. I would love to see Agassi in the final (although very unlikely), or Hewitt, Safin, Murray, Gasquet.

You can write Blake out. His confidence is shuttered...

And James is a confidence player. Lack of confidence + low margin-for-error game = at the US Open. Rolling Eyes

I'm starting to think Roddick (especially if he gets a good draw) could go very far at the USO. And I'm not even a fan of his. A lot of the top guys look vulnerable or inconsistent at the moment. I really expect the youth movement to come to the fore at this major. All 7 of the young guns are seeded, that's pretty amazing! The most exciting thing will be seeing which one's go far and which one's flame out early.
I'm surprised Ljubicic didn't do more this summer 'cause he's looked so good on hard courts the past year and a half. But the question is can he step it up at a major and beat a lot of the top guys in pressure situations?

Extremely unlucky for British players Henman and Rusedski. They will play each other in the first round (Henman leads 7-2), with the winner most likely to play Federer.

Yes she has Klara Koukalova in her first match. Koukalova has had a dismal season so far, not reaching the QF of any event so far. Last year was a great season for her with 2 titles and a final. She really has lost her form. Schnyder just lost in New Haven, and Davenport should be able to handle her. That brings her to a QF meeting with (likely) JHH. I really hope Davenport could progress from there. JHH only has been past the 4th round once before, and that was when she won the title in 03.
