Nadal had a BRUTAL draw, i'm not sure if he would want to go through Safin, Gasquet, Blake, Berdych. _________________ www.freewebs.com/tenniswallpapers by myself and x.doublea

That is a big shame for Federer and Nadal to pull out, aswell as many others in the top 10.
Anyway, first round action started yesterday. Marat Safin won 6-1 7-6 over Nicolas Mahut. Safin won the tournament in 2000, 2002 and 2004 and looks to continue that trend. French players Arnaud Clement, Paul-Henri Mathieu, Sebastian Grosjean and Michael Llodra all went through in straight sets. Christophe Rochus, Nicolas Almagro and Kristof Vliegen survived tough matches aswell.
In doubles, the defending champions Bob and Mike Bryan eased through. In-form team of Santoro/Zimonjic upset 4th seeds Hanley/Ullyett.
Some of today's results:
Mens Singles 2nd round
Dmitry Tursunov (15) bt. Nicolas Almagro 6-3 5-4 rtd
Robby Ginepri bt. David Ferrer (11) 6-3 6-4 (another convincing win for Ginepri in his recent boost in form)
I'm sure the magician hit some creative shots.... _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself
Tennis Masters Cup contender Tommy Robredo, currently No. 8 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race with 410 points, will take on 2001 champion Sebastien Grosjean (pictured left) in the second round of the BNP Paribas Masters on Wednesday.
Robredo, who holds a 4-2 career edge over the Frenchman, is only eight points ahead of No. 9 Fernando Gonzalez in the Race to Shanghai.
Tennis Masters Cup Qualifying Scenarios
Grosjean, who beat Yevgeny Kafelnikov for the 2001 title, improved his record against Xavier Malisse of Belgium to 9-0 with a 6-1, 7-6(7) win. Grosjean has reached two semifinals in France this year, at Marseille in February (l. to Ancic) and Metz (l. to Djokovic) three weeks ago.
American James Blake, currently No. 7 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race with 411 points, will begin his Paris campaign against Arnaud Clement. The Frenchman, a winner of two ATP titles in Marseille (d. Ancic) and Washington (d. Murray) this year, lost just eight points on serve in beating Chilean Nicolas Massu 6-1, 6-4 in 66 minutes.
Three-time champion Marat Safin rallied from a set down to defeat in-form Swede and No. 18 seed Robin Soderling 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Safin has won the title every two years since 2000. He next meets the winner of 16th-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet and Swiss No. 2 Stanislas Wawrinka.
Wawrinka fired 21 aces in a dramatic 7-6(6), 6-7(4), 7-6(2) win over last week's Lyon finalist Marc Gicquel in a match that featured no breaks of serve. Gicquel saved all nine break points he faced in the match; Wawrinka, who won 90 percent of points on his first serve, offered up just one break point.
Tennis Masters Cup qualifier Nikolay Davydenko conceded just 13 points in his 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Christophe Rochus. The Russian won 20 of 21 points on his first serve and lost just five points in total on serve during the match.
Julien Benneteau saved four match points when serving at 3-5 in the third set before defeating fellow Frenchman Fabrice Santoro 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(5). Santoro was broken to love when he served for the match at 5-4 during a key stretch in which Benneteau won nine consecutive points.
Robby Ginepri broke No. 11 seed David Ferrer of Spain five times during a 6-3, 6-4 second round win in 68 minutes. American Ginepri improves his ATP match record to 23-25 this season. He now awaits the winner of either defending champion and No. 8 seed Tomas Berdych or Olivier Rochus, this year's Munich champion, who play on Wednesday.
Juan Ignacio Chela Will Play Andy Murray in the Second Round.Dmitry Tursunov won his first match in four weeks Tuesday. The Russian No. 15 seed was leading Nicolas Almagro of Spain 6-3, 5-4, when this season’s Valencia champion retired due to a quadriceps muscle tear after 61 minutes. Tursunov, who captured his maiden ATP title in Mumbai (d. Berdych) and finished a runner-up at Los Angeles (l. to Haas) this year, improves his ATP season record to 45-30.
Juan Ignacio Chela won his first career match at the final at ATP Masters Series event of the year, when Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand retired due to sinus problem after 43 minutes while trailing Chela 6-3, 3-0 during their first round tie. Chela, who had previously experienced opening round losses in 2002 (l. to Ljubicic), 2003 (l. to Ascione), and 2004 (l. to Melzer), goes on to meet No. 13 seed Andy Murray. The 19-year-old Scot lost to Chela in the Australian Open first round in January _________________
That is a big shame for Federer and Nadal to pull out, aswell as many others in the top 10.
I agree for the ones who are not really injured, but there are a few really injured players (Ljubicic, Roddick, Baghdatis) who actually pulled out of this early, so they are not listed as late withdrawals.
However, I agree absolutely on the Nadal and Federer withdrawals... shame on them...
That is bad for Thomas Johansson as he was getting his form back after his injury-struck season. Very good win for Mathieu, beating Djokovic. That is a big upset considering their recent form. Mathieu has been in poor form since the French Open when he lost that very close match with Nadal. Good win for Blake aswell to stay in contention for Shanghai. Bjorkman and Mirnyi had to save 4 match points. If they had lost, it would have guranteed the Bryans the year-end world number 1.
Right now, 2001 champion Sebastian Grosjean is 4-2 up against YEC contender Tommy Robredo. Another contender, Mario Ancic is 4-2 up in the final set against Kristof Vliegen.
Berdych got lucky. he was up 1-5 in the second, and Rochus caught fire. Rochus broke Berdych at love, was holding easily, and was close to breaking for 5-5. timely aces for Berdych were the only reasons he got out of that second set. _________________
