La sonnambula (Bellini), with Callas live in 1957. An absolutely charming performance.... _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself

I'm so excited... we managed to get tickets to next Thursday's performance of Giordano's Andrea Chenier at the Met!
... preparing for the opera right now. Second time I'm listening to it today... I listened to the Corelli/Stella studio earlier. Now, I'm listening to the Callas/del Monaco live performance. _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself

so, did you see it?
I did get to see a live broadcast of The Last Emperor from the Met. It was different to watch (To say the least). _________________

Yes, it was great. A bit strange though... Violeta Urmana (soprano) had a cold. Obviously, she could have been better, but she is still the best dramatic soprano I have heard in an opera house. Ben Heppner, who was Andrea Chenier (tenor), is not exactly Franco Corelli, but he was very good, since he is the closest thing there is to a heldentenor (Wagnerian tenor) nowadays. He does lack the 'Italian richness' evident in Corelli or del Monaco, but that's understandable. Too bad he cracked the final note of the big final duet.... The baritone was exceptional. The conductor fully exploited the beauty of the orchestra, although tempos were to the slower side.
So, I really enjoyed it. The opera house, of course, is amazing. Very grand... there are even moving chandeliers! I have to say though... the Four Seasons Opera Centre in Toronto has better acoustics. There was a dead spot on the stage where the singers' voices just couldn't project.
I bet the live movie experience was something... apparently, the Barbiere production was really, really good. _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself

glad you liked it
it was something. I didn't quite understand a lot of the set Placido was wonderful, as one might expect. the soprano..... umm...... was disappointing. the tenor was ok, his voice was rather ugly, but he was a good actor. the mezzo who played the mother of the princess was charming to listen to _________________

It's funny how you refer to the second-lead tenor ,"The Tenor". Was the voice too nasal for your tastes? Was the soprano Elizabeth Frutal? She's pretty second tier... not bad but not in the same league as the likes of Gheorghiu, Fleming, or Urmana. Like, she has the technique and all that, but there is just something missing. _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself

Placido is Placido, it is second nature to call him by name, like Callas or Corelli
yes, the soprano was Frutal. I found both boring, and...... she almost over acted. She seemed fake.
yes for the tenor. he just doesn't have a pleasant voice _________________

That's the sound many lyric tenors have... take, for example, Nicolai Gedda (slightly). Of course, Gedda is extremely accomplished (the tenor with the most recordings), and has great interpretation. But, the sound does get to me sometimes.... _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself
Very interesting... the opera guide I was just reading referred to Un ballo in maschera as "Verdi's love poem, his Tirstan und Isolde". _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself
Watched Strauss's Elektra on Saturday... what a great opera it is. The music isn't pretty, but it matches almost perfectly with the drama.... _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself
I watched Eugene Onegin broadcast from the Met with Renee Fleming. I actually did like her The baritone (Can't remember his name, he is Russian I know) was nice as well. I can't say I cared for the opera, I found the music to be a bit bland, but it was nicely sung _________________

Dmitri Hvorostovsky?
If you get a chance, watch Elektra. I was so immersed into the drama, I was speechless for ten minutes.
