Just watched Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Four Seasons Centre. It was interesting music. It wasn't exactly something I would want to listen to every day, but it was quite dramatic. But, by dear god, it was explicit! Shocked

Guys, for my opera videos, I'm trying out a new design for my titles. Can you give me some feedback? Thanks. Very Happy

One of the creepiest scenes I have ever seen, both musically and subject-wise....

Overall, it was good. Unfortunately, the tenor who played Faust was lousy (such a nasal voice!) and Marguerite was vocally a bit to heavy for the role. The baritone who sang the part of Valentin was excellent, the bass-baritone who sang Mefistofoles was good, as was the mezzo who sang Seibel (sp) was also good. Production was interesting but way too modern. The use of projectors in opera does not humour me.

Too bad no one danced in the ballet....

I don't get to get to see opera live. Razz The Met did show (not the radio, I got to see it Wink ) I Puritani with Anne Netrebko yesterday. I do like her a lot. She is my favorite soprano right now. Her mad scene was excellent.

I'm not a huge fan of hers, as I find her voice a bit strange (and, yet, I love Callas's! Rolling Eyes ). I don't know why... perhaps it's too soubrette for my tastes.

If you're interested, here's a beautifully sung aria by the wonderful Renata Tebaldi. The Willow Song, from Act IV of Otello. The greatest mature Verdi aria.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shSnTHEwo8Q

And, here's Joan Sutherland's studio Casta Diva.

Renata was amazing like always. Razz

I stopped listening to Sutherland's. Maybe my bar is set too high for Casta Diva, I don't know. Wink

Some people prefer Sutherland's Norma to Callas's. I have no idea why. I was listening to the little cabeletta after Casta Diva. Sutherland adds all these little embellishments (fireworks). Now, what I say to that, is, "Oh, how beautiful... what is that?" (quote from Rossini Wink )

Yes, Tebaldi was gorgeous. Desdemona was probably her best role, in my opinion.

Vissi d'arte, with Renata Scotto

I was on the verge of crying at the end of this performance.

One of the most gorgeous arias I have ever heard... Depuis le jour, from Charpentier's Louise:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qHjP2VvGEI

Sung by, of course, Maria Callas.

BTW, PSALT (or, in fact, anyone who wants to get a bit more familiar with opera), I seriously recommend you to listen to a few of these podcasts:

http://handelmania.libsyn.com/

It's superb. Handelman truly picks the right stuff to listen to.

thanks so much for these podcasts Very Happy

I am listening to the 'Si vendetta' podcast. Callas is one of the singers during it. I have always realized how different her voice is. listening to it sandwiched between other singers though really showed me HOW different. It's so much more enchanting then theirs. It is not nearly as pretty, it is real though. Some of the other singers can get lost in the crowd, they are all so similiar, they are like robots. Callas is Callas though. You will never mix her up with someone else. She is so different and amazing.

That's so accurate. And, I love her voice the most. One of those voices that, for many, is sort of like a violin... it sounds awkward at first, but after you get better acquainted with it, you absolutely desire it 24/7.

Aida (Verdi), with Maria Callas, Mario del Monaco, Oralia Dominguez, and Giuseppe Taddei live in Mexico City in 1951. Not too shabby.
