Eighth-seeded Hyung-Taik Lee won his second career meeting over top-seeded Ivan Ljubicic for a place in his first ATP-level semifinal of the season at the China Open on Friday.
Lee knocked out Ljubicic 6-3, 7-6(3) in one hour and 42 minutes. Although Ljubicic hit 11 aces and saved four of six break point opportunities, the Croat won just 14 of 51 points on first serve returns.
Ljubicic, winner of ATP titles in Chennai and Zagreb, now holds a 51-16-match record. Meanwhile 30-year-old Lee will appear in his first ATP-level semifinal since Queen’s Club, London, in 2004, against No. 4 seed Mario Ancic.
Ancic edged past Slovak No. 5 seed Dominik Hrbaty 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-4, hitting 13 aces. The 22-year-old broke Hrbaty’s serve once from six opportunities for victory in two hours and 11 minutes. Hrbaty hit eight double faults.
The 22-year-old, currently No. 10 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race with one ATP-level title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, improves his season match record to 43-13 in his ATP circuit comeback following back and knee injuries.
Hrbaty, who holds a 22-22 record in 2006, won their last career meeting in the 2005 Davis Cup final, but Croatia went on to win the title. Ancic now leads 4-3 in their career series.
Davydenko retired due to dizziness after 33 minutes, whilst trailing Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand 6-2, 1-0. Srichaphan booked his place in his first semifinal since the Pacific Life Open, an ATP Masters Series event in Indian Wells.
The Thai will now play No. 3 seed Marcos Baghdatis, who cruised past Srichaphan’s compatriot Danai Udomchoke 6-2, 6-1 in 79 minutes. Baghdatis, currently No. 9 in the INDESIT ATP 2006 Race with 342 points, is looking to win his maiden ATP title.
Defending champion Florent Serra and fellow Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu charged into the BCR Open Romania semifinals by posting straight sets wins Friday in Bucharest.
Serra, the No.2 seed, was the first one to advance as he defeated Germany’s Florian Mayer 6-3, 7-6(5) to book a spot in his third semifinal of the season.
The 25-year-old Frenchman, who won his first career title in Bucharest last year, took the Adelaide crown this season and is currently No.44 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings.
Serra will next take on fifth-seeded Filippo Volandri, who defeated third-seeded Carlos Moya 6-3, 6-3.
Volandri, a Buenos Aires finalist, will be looking to reach his seventh career ATP final where he is 1-5 (claimed his lone career title at St. Poelten 2004).
Serra and Volandri have faced each other two times in the ATP circuit (tied 1-1). In the last time both players met, last year here in Bucharest, Serra won in three sets.
Meantime, Mathieu spent little time in dismissing Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1, 6-4 to notch his 99th career win. The 24-year-old, who reached a career-high ranking of No.32 in May this season, will be looking to advance to his first ATP final since Palermo in 2003.
Mathieu will battle Jurgen Melzer, a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo. The Austrian will be contesting in his fourth semifinal of the season after reaching the last round at Houston and semifinals at Munich and Newport.
Melzer holds a 1-0 lead in his head-to-head series against Mathieu with their lone career meeting coming in Palermo 2002.

Dave picked Volandri. NEA didn't put in his picks this week. Good pick Dave! Lindsay should win tomorrow, good luck to her anyways. _________________ www.freewebs.com/tenniswallpapers by myself and x.doublea

See! I remembered that the smart picks came from England, because of the British accent! I specifically remember the statement that we shouldn't all pick Tursunov because he is not good on clay and that Volandri looked good and in a position to do well. Sorry Dave, but your compatriot is more vocal so I thought it was NEA!
Baghdatis has had a good tournament too, considering he lost early at the US Open. _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself

That's really too bad. She had a great tournament. Did she wear out? Anyways, a good run for Lindsay. _________________ "Satan is behind Illegal Immigration."- Don Larson, Utah County Republican Tennis Wallpapers, presented by leftys_rock and myself
Baghdatis and Ancic are both pushing to get into the ATP Cup. Roddick came from behind and secured a spot after the USO, so it made things interesting.
It's a shame that Lindsay lost, but it seems she wasen't at her best, and Kuznetsova was. I hope Lindsay knows what to do to improve now for the rest of the season. She has an alright draw in Beijing if she plays well. Anyway, she is currently up a set in the doubles final with Morariu!
Kuznetsova has remained unbeaten in Bali, she won her 3rd title to add to her 2002, 2004 crowns. She beat Marion Bartoli.
Jurgen Melzer won his first ATP singles title, 6-1 7-5 over Filippo Volandri in Bucharest. I am suprised the final in Bucharest is finished before the final in Beijing. It must be a very late match there.
Baghdatis won easily in in Beijing 6-4 6-0 and will add 34 points and overtake James Blake in the crucial eighth place in the INDESIT ATP Race. He is 1 point behind Nalbandian for 7th place and 5 behind Robrero for 6th.
It will be a tight race between:
6th: Robrero: 374
7th: Nalbandian: 370
8th: Baghdatis: 369
9th: Blake: 365
10th: Ancic: 343
