Yay Little Masha! And Ivanovic!
Great win for Kirilenko to get on track, thats exciting. She played a good Australian Open last year, didnt she push Lindsay to three?

yes, but it was more because Lindsay tweaked her ankle in the second than great play from Kirilenko.

Time for me to get extremely emotional over a Kirilenko loss,
6-2, 7-5 and she was up 4-2 in the second!!!! AHHHHH!

Which would be helped with a higher ranking which means winning more.

it's kinda tough to do that w/ crap draws

Everybody starts out with crap draws first. Justine, Maria, Amelie, heck even Amelie at #1 had crap draws. Everybody has crap draws at some point. They'll either survive and get better draws or fail and keep getting crap draws.

i guess MK is gonna have to wait a couple of days then for a somewhat good draw *wishing she does not get serena early at hobart*

Jankovic wins her first title with a marathon 7-6(9), 5-7, 6-3 win over Zvonareva which took 2 hours and 43 minutes. What a way to win a first title!
*Edit: Second title, not first. First was in 2004, so it's been a long time.

Safina def Hingis 6-3 3-6 7-5
Safina truly is annoying to watch. She hits the ball so friggin hard, she never let's up. It's so annoying to see her try and pound a winner when she is out of position, 99% of the time it will be an error, but she doesn't seem to care. At least Sharapova and Vaidisova know sometimes, you need to let up on the power. Safina doesn't.

I don't like the noise that Safina makes when she grunts sometimes, it's more like an "AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!" and such.

I agree with leftys I hate that sound she makes when she grunts. It is the only sound worse than Sharapova's.
Anyway, what an incredible win for her! I am really happy for her that she pulled that one out because she was behind all the way. I would have liked Hingis to win, but credit to Safina because it isn't easy to beat Hingis at the start of the year. She may not be the best to watch, but she does have guts and is always improving. It is her first title since the Prague Open in May 2005, and 5th title of her career.
Hingis gave her credit at the end aswell,
"Everyone should watch her because she's going to be maybe even better than her brother," said the Swiss star.
"She doesn't have as much touch but she has more will and desire."
Straight after the singles final, she teamed up with Katarina Srebotnik to defend the doubles title (which she won with Meghann Shaughnessy last year). Safina and Srebotnik beat Iveta Benesova and Galina Voskoboeva 6-3 6-4. It is Safina's 5th doubles title, and Srebotnik's 14th.
Safina has had the best possible start to the year!

Mirza is still pretty streaky, so I think Kirilenko has a god chance of advancing....

Not one of these tourneys, but Clijsters beat Sharapova 6-3, 7-6 to win the exo in Hong Kong.

That's a good start for Clijsters... she's coming strong into the AO. Perhaps a good win there can reverse her plans....

Good win for Clijsters defending the title.
Earlier today in Auckland, Janette Husarova and Paola Suarez won the doubles title. They have only teamed up 3 times in their whole careers, and all 3 times they reached at least the final. They previously won the Bogota title in 1998. Husarova last won the Auckland title a whole decade ago.

Question, for Fantasy Pool. Are we 'defending' points, or has the slate been wiped clean for this season?
|

Slate wiped clean. Defending would be too hard because some might not be entered in the same tournament and such.

you wouldn't need the same player to defend for you to get the points again. MoMo won the Aussie, if I was right that she would last season, but pick Clijsters to win this season, and she does, I would defend those points.

Even so, it might create complications for instance when a tournament is added or degraded and such.

It's difficult at this stage as we've just split the two into ATP and WTA rankings. I'll look into it next season as I don't really want to count out the separate points from last season's rankings.

I like the fresh start! This is not rankings, it is a race... actually two races this year.
