Williams' Sisters in 2006Venus lost in the first round of the Australian Open, and Serena is now ranked 39th in the world. Without any "if's" and "but's" how well do you think they will be able to do this year?
J-man
wow serena down to 39 in the world they could always surprise us theose willam sisters, but i don't think that they can win any majors. so many other players going iinto the match have alot of confidence against the willam sisters. i can't see them winning any majors they year. they will get beat by lowly ranked players

They desperately need to practice more and get some matchplay. They cant just walk onto the court and win anymore, they now have to work very hard. They should train very hard and prepare for Miami, where they are both 3-times champions. Then , they need to have an easy clay-court season (just a few tournaments), and have a good showing at their best event, Wimbledon. Serena needs to get fitter, Venus needs more confidence and matchplay...
J-man
i agree. serena despretley needs to shed some pounds. but i think most importantly for both of the sisters is that they need to work on their game. the make way to many unforced errors in matches.

Mats Wilander put it perfectly: "Their passion for tennis is gone. The passion for winning might still be there, but that's not enough."
J-man
mats is right. and people have been saying that for sometime now
x.doublea
Wilander's making some really good observations as the tennis analyst for Eurosport.
J-man
i hope he heads over to ESPN for some analyst.
x.doublea
Probably won't because ESPN already has its prolific crowd. You can still catch his anaylises on Eurosport.com.
J-man
that's cool. i should check it out.
x.doublea
Eurosport has really good highlights and interviews. Very thourough and complete, although they skip some highlights sometimes. If you have a streaming video saving program, you can even save the videos as a .wmv file if you want to keep it in your computer.
J-man
yeah i remeber on CP someone posted a link for eurosport tennis and they had great streaming videos
x.doublea
It's better than the ESPN streaming videos- half of them don't work properly and are very poor in visual quality.
J-man
oh well. it shows that htey really don't take the time to improve their tennis links on the site
x.doublea
They spend most of their time on football, basketball, and baseball (???).
J-man
yeah your right. but it is the time to spend time on football because the super bowl is coing up
x.doublea
I have no idea why football is so popular. I don't see anything entertaining in it. Anyways, the super bowl is probably the biggest championship next to the World Series.

J-man
well american's like vio,lence . i should know i'm american
x.doublea
I guess it applies to most Canadians too.
J-man
yeah good ol' hockey
x.doublea
Hockey's not all about fighting, though. In fact, fighting is a very small part of professional games. It's more about speed and skill. Unfortunately, some players make it look violent.
J-man
yeah. and the stories you hear about hockey. i myself do not play hockey
x.doublea
For example, the Todd Bertuzzi incident which brought a lot of media attention (the one where he broke the guys neck in front of national television). That's not hockey. He's not that type of player too. I think he was a bit lost in the moment.
J-man
well i don't fillow hockey and i haven't head about that incident. but ethier way that's horrible

I think Venus has the best chance winning Wimbledon. I not sure if Serena is going to win any slams this year.
J-man
venus has the best chance to win wimbledon between the sisters. but i don't know about the best chance on the womens tour
baselinebrawler
The Williams sisters need to get back to commiting themselfs to tennis and not fashion and all that other stuff. Both sisters have a lot of talent , but they need to focus their engery on getting back on the court.
leftys_rock
ok umm.....well i dont think they are going to win any majors this year...its true their passion for focussing on the game is gone......venus has a better chance than serena, but i dont think shes going to get very far....
baselinebrawler
That is so unfortunate because both Venus and Serena Has so much Talent & potential.
J-man
| baselinebrawler wrote: | | The Williams sisters need to get back to commiting themselfs to tennis and not fashion and all that other stuff. Both sisters have a lot of talent , but they need to focus their engery on getting back on the court. | yeah i agree. if they can do this they have a chance
x.doublea
Venus will have to committ herself more if she wants to defend her Wimbledon title. Otherwise, it will be Davenport's and Sharapova's tournament.
J-man
i agree
baselinebrawler
Yes will will really know the commitment level of Venus as the grass tournaments approach and Wimbledon gets close. If she appears to be focused she could be a force at Wimbledon.
J-man
yeah she could. i won't be surprised if her comittee level goes up at wimbleon
baselinebrawler
I hope so because Lindsey is the only other chance the American Woman have of winning Wimbledon.
x.doublea
Her game is basically built for grass, so she will have a good chance.
J-man
all of the power hitters are the forst one's to come to mind at wimbledon. on grass it's more about power
x.doublea
Power or finesse, of course.
J-man
yeah mauresmo. but i like power on grass
x.doublea
It works, but on grass, I think in terms of the best players, finesse prevails over power; Ex. Federer vs. Roddick
J-man
yeah but federer's got some power. but i'm talking about the womens side where it seems that power is triumphant over finesse
x.doublea
That's true, although Mauresmo and Hingis might be the forerunners at Wimbledon this year.
J-man
yes defentily. all eyes will be on them and the defending champion venus willams
x.doublea
We'll see whether Venus gets on a roll leading up to Wimbledon this year.
J-man
she won't do anything good at the the french open
x.doublea
She isn't really comfortable at Roland Garros, but she's sure dominant Wimbledon...she has won three singles championships there.
J-man
yeah i really think she will raise her game at wimbledon
x.doublea
Her strokes are really built for grass: fast, flat, penetrating.
x.doublea
Both Venus and Serena signed up for the Family Circle Cup.
J-man
that's good. i remeber that tournment last year. when's it on??
x.doublea
The tournament runs from April 10-16.
J-man
oh thanks. i can't remeber who won that tournment, was it JHH???
x.doublea
Yes, Henin-Hardenne beat Dementieva 75 64 in the final.
J-man
thanks. i don't really remeber the match very well
x.doublea
It was her first or second staight victory since coming back from her injury.
leftys_rock
what are the williams sisters next tourneys?? anything before family circle??
x.doublea
They'll probably play Indian Wells or Miami before the Family Circle Cup.
leftys_rock
true....we'll see if they can scrape up anything from there....
x.doublea
I have a feeling they won't play both tournaments; they will only pick one to play at.
leftys_rock
eek, theyll lose even more points.....oh well, if that is their choice, theres nothing we can do about it....
x.doublea
I don't think they are too interested in being ranked nuymber 1, simply because they both believe that they are number 1 in their hearts. Unfortunately, they are not backing up their claims.
leftys_rock
yeah....when they talk to the media, they always say "i want that #1 ranking back" but they dont have results.......just believing it in their hearts isnt enough.....they have to put all the effort into it....
x.doublea
They believe that they can win just on talent. They've proven that isn't possible at the AO.
leftys_rock
yeah....they have HORRIBLE unforced error numbers in their matches.....that has to change if they want to win more matches...
J-man
| leftys_rock wrote: | | yeah....when they talk to the media, they always say "i want that #1 ranking back" but they dont have results.......just believing it in their hearts isnt enough.....they have to put all the effort into it.... | yeah and you'd think the two GS in 2005 would motivate them to do better
leftys_rock
yeah....and those were surprises too....they probably thought that that was enough to get them to win a GS, so they didnt practice that much for the AO.....
J-man
yeah i know surprising. they think with one GS they've should themselves and don't have to do anything else. but their wrong
leftys_rock
yeah....they have to realize now that they cant go into a GS with zero practice and zero warm up tourneys....
x.doublea
The worst thing is that their coach (their father) approves this lack of effort.
leftys_rock
true....their dad has to realize that they wont win by not practicing and just wanting it.....cuz that is just not enough....
x.doublea
He was saying that they could still beat anyone when playing their best. The question is...will the ever play their best?
leftys_rock
yeah, because they cant play their best if they dont practice....they really have to cut down on all the bling, media, etc.....i think that sharapova has to watch out for this too.....
x.doublea
We don't have to worry about Sharapova: Sharapova treats tennis as her full time job; the William Sisters treat it as a way to make some extra cash.
leftys_rock
true...but she has a pretty mediocre start to the year compared to what she has done previously....we'll see if she can get rolling later....do u know her next tourney??
x.doublea
I'm not sure...probably something between Indian Wells. At Indian Wells, she will want to wipe out her memory of her 60 60 loss to Davenport.
leftys_rock
she will probably be playing in doha, shes the defending champ there.....yes, she will most definitely want to wipe that memory out...it will be nice to have her win doha again, she would probably like to have a title to get her year rolling.......
x.doublea
Oh. I think she's playing in Dubai too.
leftys_rock
how far did she get in dubai last year?? i know she didnt win it because davenport won the title....or is this her debut??
x.doublea
She didn't play. She played in Doha though, and beat Molik in the final.
leftys_rock
yeah, i saw that.....i checked the wta tourney schedule....we are going to be very busy for fantasy tennis....there is a tourney that we can make picks for every week until RG until the last week before the FO starts....
J-man
| leftys_rock wrote: | | she will probably be playing in doha, shes the defending champ there.....yes, she will most definitely want to wipe that memory out...it will be nice to have her win doha again, she would probably like to have a title to get her year rolling....... | yeah she needs a rallying cry. after all of these heartbreaking upsets
x.doublea
She isn't grunting as much too, so that might be a bad sign....
J-man
she's just fustrated and mentally tired. she is getting negative on herself. it happens to alot of players in different ways
x.doublea
She used to have nothing to lose. Now, she's the favourite where ever she goes. I hope she changes her attitude, because every player goes through less-successful times. She's lucky it's happening now and not in the future (during her prime).
J-man
this is one reason why maria isn't #1. she can't handle the pressure. the media i ntheir eyes thanks she is always going to win, which quite frankly is wrong. plus it has to do with her popularity.
x.doublea
Handling so much pressure at her age is very difficult. The media thinks she will win because she's just so popular.
J-man
exactly. i think it's best for a tennager to have slower start like vadisova or mirza. build there confidence as their age and matureness goes up
x.doublea
That's right. Well, I guess it's also good to be making 20.5 million dollars per year when you're a teenager due to your good results and looks too.
J-man
plus every tennis teenager dreams of becoming #1 at a young age and having all of that fame and money
x.doublea
She's already fullfilled that. She has to find a way to get back to the top.
J-man
yes and getting back to the top is going to be hard. i mean hingis is threat to anyone
x.doublea
I think Sharapova will have to wait a few years before she can consistantly be at the top.
J-man
yeah i can totally agree with you on that one
x.doublea
For these years, though, it will be a lot of Henin-Hardenne, Clijsters, Mauresmo, and possibly Hingis.
J-man
yeah the none all power game players. it's a good change for women's tennis.
x.doublea
I guess Henin-Hardenne can overpower some opponents, but she's more of a 'touch' player. I agree. This will good for the WTA.
leftys_rock
yeah...we all would hate to see the womens tour turn into the power game.....it could possibly happen because a lot of top tour players have the power game, and everybody wants to follow it........i find that boring though....
x.doublea
Having a power game is alright, but it's boring when everybody uses it. There's almost no variety in women's tennis.
leftys_rock
except for mauresmo and JHH....and because everybody is following davenport and sharapova's game, there are more power players.....i hardly see any one handed backhands anymore except for my own....
