Last year showed that if Lindsay or Venus play their best Sharapova cannot beat them no matter how she plays. Also Mauresmo has Sharapova's number.

That was last year. I don't think Venus can play her best this year. I fell being defending champ mihgt put to much pressure on her.
Mauresmo also has good chance like you said.

what about Davenport? if she is healthy no one wants this title more than her. if she plays liek she did last year who iwll stop her? Sharapova most can't. Sharapova was sent home with her tail beneath her legs by Venus, yet Davenport had match points on Venus. Also, there isn't much to worry about Davenport not playing well. she is one of the best on tour about coming back from injury. she was injured for almost all of 2002 I believe it was came back and dominated the summer hardcourt season.

Sharapova has been due for a GS title for a while. There isn't a big "DEFENDING CHAMPION" flashing box sitting on her head this year, so she might do better minus that pressure. I would like to see Lindsay do very well here, but I have no idea what her state of being is. Mauresmo's game suits the surface, so we could see a final run for her. Venus is still UE prone, and I don't think that having a good day, bad day run will allow her to get the title. Should be interesting for the women this year.

no one is more due a slam than Davenport. after her probably Dementieva but she doesn't have a chance here.

6 years. I really HOPE she wins Wimbledon this year, but it is tough to tell with her physical state. Hopefully the draw will be kind to her.

Davenport too. It's almost a given answer. Sharapova doesn't want to be know as a 1 slam wonder.
One thing about sharapova people aren't as intimdated by Sharapova as they used to be. Once you get past the grunts players are saying "I might have a chance". But Sharapova's fighting spirt can get her through tough matches
Davenport on the other hand is more intimdated because she is such a big hitter. She doesn't grunt so most of her intimdation comes from her game

I think Davenport will win. She truly deserves it, and I think she'll just get it this year. No idea why I think this will happen....

Hate to admit it, but I see Sharapova winning her 2nd Wimbledon title. Venus could win it, but I think she'll feel a lot more pressure as the defending champ. She was way under the radar last yr., and that helped her to a degree. I don't see Davenport winning any more majors. She always gets hurt or doesn't close the deal in her big matches of the past 5 yrs.
I think JHH could surprise some people and also be around for the final 4. She has the game to win it all but the draw will be key for her. She doesn't want to face any huge servers that can push her around the court. Also, I'm very curious to see how Vaidisova does. No reason why she can't make it deep into the 2nd wk. With that power serve, and big groundstrokes, she should be a factor.
But overall the draw is wide open. Sharapova and Venus are probably the two biggest favorites, but there are another 4-5 players that if everything goes right could end up with the hardward.

I picked Sharapova to win also. But when Davenport or Venus are playing their best their to much for Sharapova

The Womens game is too hard to predict! Its amazing how many players are so eligable to win a tournament. I think a Sharapova-Venus

Perhaps I am being very optimistic, but I chose Davenport. I refuse to go against her. I think she has a chance but she's not the favourite for once. Hopefully her back will be great and she will be able to play her way into the tournament. Come on Lindsay!

I dont think Davenport can do it. I might eat these words but oh well. I think Vaidisova will make it further than her.
|

I don't think Vaidisov will make it further than Davenport. Considering Davenport won more matches on grass last Wimbledon than Vaidisova did in her whole career. Vaidisova does not have the transitional game that Lindsay has to suceed on grass.

Yes, I'm saying Davenport will go farther as well. She has more accuracy and power than Vaidisova, and she can finish points at the net better than the majority of the field.
|

Well I just think Vaidisova will make it farther. Not exactly sure why.

I know it's a long shot for her, but I'd really like to see her win Wimbly
Amelie Mauresmo,
Her serve is solid,
Her Groundstrokes need a slight adjustment on the backswing
Her Volleys are some of the best on the WTA
and She loves to be agressive...which is vital to winning on grass...it's not about the rallies, but who takes the initiative and is aggressive first....this is the essence of Mauresmo's game...so why not?
Yea I know the mental aspect, but I'm still hoping.

Mauresmo's always a contender at Wimbledon; she'll threaten for sure.

Mauresmo is definetley one of the favourites. She loves to play at Wimbledon away from home pressure. She has shown she can play well at big moments now. Her game is great for the grass aswell.

It's also the Slam she consistantly does the beset in. Her variety of power and slice really suits Wimbledon- she's one of the few who can win on grass without sheer power.

So looks like I was right already with Vaidisova going farther than Davenport. Davenport has withdrawn Its too bad. Sure dave will be crushed.

No!!!!! Lindsay!! Get well soon!

That is terrible news. Not only will she not be able to compete at her best chance for another slam, but she will lose a lot of points from her final last year.
|

This is dreadful news. I was really looking forward to her comeback at Wimbledon. It's a shame she will lose points, but if she can recover afterwards, she has no points at all to defend in the US Open series until the end. I hope she will recover from this back injury and get back to her winning ways on the tour. What a blow to wimbledon.

I think Davenport is done for now anyhow...I really love her but her chance of winning another GS is long gone. Similar story to Agassi...so distressing, two of my favourite players (well Agassi is my all time favourite, whereas Lindsay I just like a lot) such a shame to see them bow out like this. Unfortunately Lindsay's chances have come and gone and this wimbledon withdrawal is just the final nail in the coffin...
|

I think it depends on how long Lindsay decides to play on for. If she is determined to play on to the future seasons then she is still one of the best who can win slams. If she dies away towards the end of this season and the injury doesn't get better then sadly her time is up. It's her motivation. If she can get this injury out of the way and have a decent end to the season, she should get back to the top. If she doesn't get some form going then I have a feeling she wil retire by the end of the year. Unless that nagging for 1 more slam comes back!

Ha! I didnt know you were an Agassi fan. I always pictured you as a sampras guy. Lol jk. Wierd.
I too think she is done. She wants babies.

I think Davenport (and Agassi ) might have one more slam in each of them. For Davenport, it's a question of whether she wants it, and Agassi, it's a matter of first getting comfortable.

Another withdrawal from Wimbledon in Mary Pierce.

sad about Lindsay. this knocks down the door for the top 4 seeds. one of them would have had to play her, they wouldn't have been happy. Mauresmo is my pick now. She is a more than capable grasscourter.
|

Yes, she has so much variety- good volleys, drives, and even a slice. The only one rivalring her in terms of variety is Henin-Hardenne....
|
leftys_rock
|
JHH has variety, but not as much as Mauresmo. Henin hits very flat compared to Mauresmo. Mauresmo can mix it up much better than JHH can and has better volleying skills. Amelie may not hit as hard as Henin, but she has excellent slice and has good topspin on the backhand to mix it up. Her forehand has a tendency to go awry at times, but it also has excellent variety.
|
PSALT
|
I think the main reason Mauresmo will win is relative lack of competition. Clijsters isn't a great grasscourter, neither in H-H, Mauresmo has never lost to Sharapova, Petrova winning Wimbledon is laughable. The only person I can really see winnign this besides Amelia is Venus. Of course we still have to see if Mauresmo will get out of her own way at slams.
|
x.doublea
|
One think Justine has on Mauresmo is the return- that huge backswing really costs Mauresmo. Justine's is nice, compact, and accurate. Justine's much more of a baseliner than Mauresmo, but she gets the job done when she's at the net as well.

Sharapova is another pick of mine. I think Maria can take Mauresmo at wimbledon if she meets her this time. Just a hunch.
My semis - Vaidisova, Sharapova, Venus, Mauresmo
Finals - Vaidisova - Venus
Winner -Venus
I don't think Vaidisova is strong enough mentally to beat Sharapova at Wimbledon. I am interested in who's quarter Hingi is drawn into. I bet the top 8 are crossing their fingers hoping it won't be them.

What if Vaidisova and Venus play each other in the semis?

I would Sharapova would win now, simply because she has more experience on the surface. However, Vaidisova can definitely make an upset....

I know its not perfect(cus no draw out yet) but just a guess thing. Im hoping they dont have to!

If Venus and Mauresmo were to meet in the SF, that would be a tough one to call. It depends on how Venus is playing that day(as we know how streaky she can be) and if Mauresmo can keep that mental in check. It shouldn't be much a problem in London, she has said that she loves to play there, as there is not the pressure of a nation in her home country on her shoulders.
