Interesting... Josh Bell isn't looked very highly by violinists, and I understand why. He has a bit of a tendency to 'cut'... his flowiness between the blowings isn't as good as it should be (from what I've heard).

Oh, I totally agree. I'm always first violin, first clarinet, etc. Always get the melody. Too bad that's not the case for baritone/basses.

But you have to be spankin' good because if you make a mistake, it's very obvious. But even though cellists don't get the melody all that often, I love the mellow tone, and when played well, creates a beautiful bass tone. And though it isn't the melody, it just doesn't sound the same if it isn't there.
Oh, I forgot you played clarinet x.doublea, it sounds so pretty in Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto.

leftys, have you heard the Intermezzo from Puccini's opera, Manon Lescaut? It has an absolutely gorgeous opening with a Cello melody.
I love the clarinet, it's so warm. And, about the cello, yes, the bass line is imperative. It's so sad, the 'bass instrument/voices (Ex. cello, bass clarinet, baritone and bass voices) are often neglected because we don't have the high notes which soar about everything else. That deep low tone is absolutely lovely.

No, I haven't, do you happen to have it on youtube or something?
Cellists CAN play high notes, but if they aren't perfect, they sound pretty bad. Like in Toccata and Fugue, there's this LONG high line for cellos that's so fast, and I have such major trouble playing it. Even our principal cellist really hates that part. Playable, but it doesn't sound great unless it's perfect.
Oh dear, I better join you in the opera thread.

It sounds great in jazz band as well as saxophone. Our trumpet happens to not sound so great, so eh, I don't like it as much. But I do want to try playing some fanfares.

The First Emperor - Tan Dun (he did the music for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon if you should happen to care), live from the Met
I listened to the World Premiere a week ago, this is the first time I have got to really listen to the music though. I find the orchestration simply amazing, it was a nice mix of what I percieve Asian music would be, and Neo-Classicism. Vocally, it was a bit tedious in places. The vocal lines seem to go on forever sometimes. I love sweeping arias and songs, some arias here were a bit.... too sweeping. It was nice though. Domingo was great, it was rather hard to believe he is 66.
