the draw is finally out. of interest for Benchie (and me), Peer and Kirilenko player first round.
if seeds hold,
Sharapova-Peer
Sharapova could meet Schiavone in the second round, that could potentially be a little tricky. Peer has Kirilenko, then likely Sugiyama.
Jankovic-Ivanovic (Ana! )
Jankovic will likely play Zheng. Ivanovic starts with Perry, than either Santangelo or Nakamura.
Dementieva-Hantuchova
Dementieva will play either Dulko, or Likhovtseva. Hantuchova plays a qualifier, than either Bremond or Bartoli.
Hingis-Li
Hingis will play a qualifier or Shaugnessy. Li plays a qualifier, than Crybaby Z, or Stosur.

Just a few facts about this tournament:
-Since it began in 1984, Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis have collected the most titles. Since 1997, at least one of them have appeared in the singles final, winning 4 singles titles each. They also dominated the doubles competition in the late-90's aswell.
- Hingis and Davenport have won the most singles titles (4), and Helena Sukova has won the most doubles titles (5).
- In total, Davenport has reached the most finals (12), followed by Hingis (10).
About this year's draw, I think Sharapova is the clear favourite to win. Only Jankovic could hurt her in the SF, but Sharapova usually raises her game after a thumping, and Jankovic's streak of good form won't last forever. Li could upset Hingis in the QF, but I think Hingis should get to the final. The only way she won't is if Dementieva, Hantuchova, Li or Stosur (?) play a really good match.
Not that it matters, but I am surprised to see Alan Mills refeering. I swear he retired at Wimbledon 2005, I remember there was a big deal made of it.

Ivanovic, Li Win Openers; Vinci Upsets Hantuchova
TOKYO, Japan - First round action kicked off on Tuesday at the $1.34 million Toray Pan Pacific Open. Daniela Hantuchova became the week's first seeded casualty, losing to Italian qualifier Robera Vinci in straight sets, 64 64. Ana Ivanovic and Li Na, the only other seeds in action, advanced to the second round.
Vinci's serve-and-volley style, unique among her peers on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, proved extremely effective against the No.8-seeded Hantuchova; she won two thirds of the points on her serve. The Slovak was also solid on her delivery, but gave up breaks late in each set en route to defeat.
"I had one bad game in each set when I was broken," said Hantuchova, who was coming off a fourth round showing at the Australian Open. "Vinci already had three matches in the qualifying rounds, and she played really well."
Vinci's win over the 18th-ranked Hantuchova serves as her fifth Top 20 victory; two of the prior four came over the Top 10, namely Anastasia Myskina and Patty Schnyder, both during the 2005 season.
Ivanovic, seeded No.5, needed 53 minutes to dispatch American Shenay Perry, 64 62, while No.6 seed Li crushed another American, Lilia Osterloh, 63 62.
Three other first rounds took the court. Francesca Schiavone beat Japanese wild card Erika Takao, 75 75; Severine Brémond defeated fellow Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli, 60 62; and Nicole Pratt outlasted Meghann Shaughnessy, 67(4) 61 64.
The 19-year-old Takao was happy with her effort against Schiavone, who was recently ranked as high as No.11 but has now dipped somewhat to No.25.
"I would have loved to play Maria Sharapova, and of course I'm disappointed to lose," lamented the Japanese teen, "but being able to compete so well against a player ranked so high, this gives me confidence going forward."
The doubles draw also kicked off, and it was not a great start for the seeds; both of the seeds in action were sent home in straight sets, namely No.3 Hantuchova and Ai Sugiyama (who fell to Jelena Jankovic and Bethanie Mattek) and No.4 Shaughnessy and Vera Zvonareva (to Elena Likhovtseva and Elena Vesnina).

That is a fantastic win for Kirilenko, her first top 20 win in just under a year. I am glad Sugiyama progressed today aswell. She has played the event every year since 1992 but has never been beyond the QF's.
In the doubles, the top 2 seeds have moved into the QF. The other two seeds were upset. Recent Hobart Champions Likhovtseva/Vesnina upset the 4th seeds Shaughnessy/Zvonereva 6-3 6-1, and Jankovic/Mattek (had no idea they knew each other!) upset 3rd seeds Hantuchova/Sugiyama. Also advancing were King/Stubbs. Stubbs won 4 straight titles here between 2001 and 2004 and is looking to join Helena Sukova with a record of 5 titles in Tokyo.
Here is this week's blog, being written by title holder Elena Dementieva: http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/3/newsroom/stories/?ContentID=1104

He retired as Wimbledon Referee, the main guy, not from refereeing as a whole I believe.

I am rooting for Sugyama tommorow This is only her 4th appearance in the QF of this event after playing here 15 straight years. She has never been past the quarters though. I think (considering she had to qualify for Tier 2 Sydney), she has done well even to reach another tier 1 QF.

Sharapova has 14 double faults and the match isn't over yet. She's probably trying to equal her 17 from yesterday.

No way! This sucks, poor Maria, get better soon.
I would love either final now though Martina-Ana would be ideal, but Elena-Ana would be interesting.

people that watched the match say she retired with a leg injury. there a quite a few people saying she pulled her hamstring. many other people say her movement was uneffected, and they doubt whether or not this was serious enough to retire because of. I don't know.
I get to see Ana in the final though.

Sharapova's game has been sufering lately, but somehow, she continues to win (minus the AO final )
I think she needs time to recover. Hopefully the injury is not serious but I see this as a possible blessing in disguise. She can take it easy and allow herself to re-focus and recover in time for RG and especially wimbledon

Martina Hingis beat Ana Ivanovic 6-4 6-2 to surpass Lindsay Davenport with a record 5 singles titles, and 7 overall titles in Tokyo. She had previously won in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002, aswell as the doubles in 1998 and 2000. This is the 11th straight year ether Hingis or Davenport have been in the singles final, and the 9th time either have won it. This is Hingis' 43rd singles title.
In the doubles, Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur defended the title, beating Vania King and Rennae Stubbs 7-6 3-6 7-5. Raymond joins Stubbs and Natasha Zvereva with 4 doubles titles in Tokyo. Helena Sukova still holds the record with 5. Stubbs was appearing in her 8th final there (6 in the last 7 years).

might as well do a match report. Ana served first, she couldn't get a first serve in that game to save her life. She was making a lot of errors, Hingis got the early break and than held for 2-0. During those games Ana was going for WAY to much. After getting down 2-0 however, she seemed to calm down and started giving herself more room for error. She managed to hold and break back for 2-2. They both held serve for 4-4. From here it is quite hard to speak of, Hingis broke at love, held at love for the set. Then won two more games at love before Ana won a point. Hingis quickly ran away with the set, Ana was going for too much again. Near the end Ana finally started to play well again, she made it difficult for Hingis to close it out. Hingis finally did, 6-4 6-2.
In other news, I must say how much the ballpeople sucked. When most ballpeople run, what they did was little more than power walking.
