The Championships

Here you can discuss the best GS.

Will Federer make it 5 or will Rafa win one?
Most importantly, will Roger sport another white sporting jacket with a new logo? Wink
Is Sharapova ready for another one?

The draws are out!
WooblesWobble

IMO Roger will win.
x.doublea

I think Federer's the clear favourite, but Nadal certainly can give him a push. Who knows, with the home crowed, I think Andy Murray will have a great run despite his recent injury.
leftys_rock

Murray out of Wimby.
WooblesWobble

That is a huge blow for the English fans. I was hoping he would be able to perform there. it is always exciting to see the locals do good in a tournament. And it gets the crowds a bit more rowdy then usual.
Tennis fan

Murray was completely outplayed last year by Baghdatis, who, by the way, is getting better on grass.

Roddick may do well, so will Rafa. At the end of day though, it will be another Federer win equalling Borg's streak of 5 in a row.

On the WTA side, we will have a very interesting event with many contenders; Serena, Henin, Amelie (yes she can still do it), Sharapova plus the two Serbian stars Ana and Jelena. I would love to see Ana win it all. Very Happy
x.doublea

Too bad Murray withdrew. Crying or Very sad

WEll, I don't think Jokavic or Ivanovic will win Wimbledon. They might have good runs, though. Mauresmo is right at home on grass, so I'm expecting another great run on her behalf. Serena can really prove something, if she keeps it all together.
leftys_rock

Nobody has really mentioned her yet, but considering this year has turned out quite a bit like 2005, I thought it would be interesting to throw Venus' name in there. Her results haven't been fantastic this year but Venus is just different at Wimbledon. She could surprise us out of nowhere here.

It's very interesting to note that Richard Williams said today that Venus "will win Wimbledon" this year. Not Serena.

And it sounds like he has some secret information there somehow. If it comes down to Venus and serena in the final do you think Serena will tank to give it to Venus?

Not tank really, but I do think that Serena wouldn't play nearly as intensely as she would compared if she played somebody else.
x.doublea

Well, Venus survived a real scare, 26 63 75. Not playing anywhere near her best, but her game rised to the important occasions....
WooblesWobble

I really felt for the poor Russian who had Venus at 2-0 down in the 2nd set after taking the first. She was practically crying out there as the match went to Venus.
x.doublea

She looks really talented. She hit some great shots. Unfortunately, her mental game let her down. Her attitude was generally quite negative.
Tennis fan

For as much as i would LOVE to see a Venus-Serena final is not going to happen...
WooblesWobble

A huge win for Brit Tim Henman over Carlos Moya.
x.doublea

Watched Serena-Molik. Molik did quite well (really like her backhand slice), and had Serena on the ropes in the first, but Serena was simply on a higher level in the second. Molik was under so much pressure, she would hit a terrific winner and then frame the next two, simply because of Serena's court presence. Serena had a great winner:error ratio as well (something like 35:15!). 76 63
PSALT

Some Women's Results

Maria Sharapova RUS (2) def Severine Bremond FRA 6-0 6-3

I will never understand why some people insist that Bremond is a good talent. Whenever I have watched her her game is boring and less than spectacular. It was a straight-foward match except for some BP's here and there in the second set that Bremond didn't convert.

Venus Williams USA (23) def Hana Sromova CZE 6-2 6-2

Huge improvement from a couple of days ago! Venus was striking the ball so much better. Granted though, it would be a push to call Sromova mediocre, so it wasn't much of a challenge.

Daniela Hantuchova SVK (10) def Elena Likhovtseva RUS 7-5 7-6

Amelie Mauresmo FRA (4) def Yvonne Meusberger AUT 6-1 6-2

Michaella Krajicek NED (31) def Katie O'Brien GBR 6-0 6-1

Happy for Michaella Cool She has a nice game. Her interview after was horrid, the press kept asking her about British tennis over and over and over again. Rolling Eyes

Elena Dementieva RUS (12) def Iveta Benesova CZE 6-2 6-2

Iveta has been sucking for a while now. Not a surprise.

Akiko Morigami JPN def Dinara Safina RUS (13) 6-4 7-5

Nice win for Akiko Cool

Lucie Safarova CZE (25) def Eleni Daniilidou GRE 6-4 3-6 6-3

Great win for Lucie against a dangerous grasscourt floater. She was leading 6-4 3-2 before she slipped and injured her knee, she lost 4 straight games after that. She played aggressive tennis in the third and got up a break before night. She finished it off today. Cool Hopefully she is 100% against Jankovic, as she has a real shot. IMO, she is more talented than the likes of Peer and Golovin. I think she is more talented than all the young up and comers besides maybe Vaidisova and Ivanovic. She is so petite and fragile though, she is always struggling with injuries and sickness.

Aravane Rezai FRA def Fransesca Schiavone ITA (29) 6-4 2-6 6-4

Fransesca's downward spiral continues. Rolling Eyes

Mara Santangelo ITA (2Cool def Carolina Wozniacki DEN 6-0 7-6

Wozniacki is overhyped. Santangelo has an almost impossible draw from here, too bad for her.

Victoria Azarenka BLR def Tathiana Garbin ITA (21) 6-1 6-3

Garbin isn't that good of a player, not surprised. She plays a lot of small events, that's why she is ranked where she is at.

Katarina Srebotnik SLO (19) def Nika Ozegovic CRO 6-1 6-1

Alona Bonderanko UKR (24) def Agnes Szavay HUN 6-2 6-3

Nicole Vaidisova CZE (14) def Nicole Pratt AUS 6-3 6-2

Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS (5) def Bethanie Mattek USA 7-6 6-4

Ana Ivanovic SRB (6) def Meilen Tu USA 6-4 6-3

Anna Chakvetadze RUS (Cool def Tatiana Poutchek BLR 6-2 6-1

Ai Sugiyama JPN (26) def Alize Cornet FRA 4-6 6-0 6-3

Great win for Ai over a player a lot of people have pinned to do a lot in her career. Very Happy

Virginie Rauno Pascual ESP def Tatiana Perebiynis UKR 7-5 6-2

Too bad. Perebynis was a Junior Wimbledon champion. She has never lived up to her junior results though.

Tamira Paszek AUT def Tatiana Golovin FRA (17) 6-2 3-6 6-1

Fantastic win for Tamira! Paszek has so much potential. This win will break her into the top 50 now. Too bad for Tati though, she isn't quite back playing her best yet.

Patty Schynder SUI (15) def Roberta Vinci ITA 2-6 6-3 6-2

Agnieszka Radwanska POL def Martina Muller GER (32) 6-1 4-0 (RET)

Muller being seeded at a Major is a pathetic sight. Rolling Eyes

Nadia Petrova RUS (11) def Sania Mirza IND 6-2 6-2
x.doublea

There seems to have been a big fuss over Golovin's red underwear.... Rolling Eyes

Henman has lost, losing in five sets to Lopez.
PSALT

Yup Laughing That interview was bad. They kept going "Back to the knickers.....". Tatiana's answers were great though Wink

Womens draw now

Justine Henin-Elena Vesnina (Elena gets such bad draws at Slams Sad )
Patty Schynder-Alona Bonderanko

Daniela Hantuchova-Katarina Srebotnik
Serena Williams-Milagros Sequera

Jelena Jankovic-Lucie Safarova
Shahar Peer-Marion Bartoli

Martina Hingis-Laura Granville
Anna Chakvetadze-Michaella Krajicek

Ana Ivanovic-Aravane Rezai
Nadia Petrova-Virginie Rauno Pascaul

Nicole Vaidisova-Victoria Azarenka
Amelie Mauresmo-Mara Santangelo

Svetlana Kuznetsova-Agnieska Radwanska
Elena Dementieva-Tamira Paszek

Venus Williams-Akiko Morigami
Maria Sharapova-Ai Sugiyama
leftys_rock

I thought Tati and Misa handled their interviews quite well. :lol:They were just getting bombarded with strange questions and the media was just dying to have something for a cover story. Well they did get that kind of in Tati's case since they talked about the fact that her knickers were red(but I mean technically you're not supposed to see them Embarassed) but she still handled it very nicely. Laughing
PSALT

Almost all the big names advanced. Two did not however, Martina Hingis fell to Laura Granville in two sets, and Michaella Krajicek took out Anna Chakvetadze in three sets.

I'm not surprised about Hingis at all. Not only is she recovering from an injury, in today's game she is a sitting duck on grass, unable to handle the power of so many players. Honestly, her best bet at getting deep in a major would be the French Open, simply because she is so tactical and most female players are just mediocre on clay.
admin

Serena really had no test today; 6-1 6-0. I think it will be much more interesting to see how Venus fares against the hard-hitting Safina. It's her last warm-up before her 4th round clash with Sharapova.

I think Roddick has been looking really good so far. It's such a shame that he's in Federer's half because I'd pick him for the final if he wasn't.

The big question is, how far do you guys think Nadal is going to go?
luvrboi

I want an Andy Roddick upset big time.

But on the Men's side Federer vs. Nadal

Women's Ivanovic vs. Henin

French Open rematches!!! I hope so. All i know is that Federer and Henin WILL be in the finals their opponents are hard to predict at this point.

Venus got a break as Morigami upset Safina in the 2nd round. So it's nearly a positive with the Venus/Sharapova R16.

Maria Sharapova and Amelie Mauresmo's matches were the only ones which finished today, both won. There won't be any play tommorow (which imo is a mistake).

They did decide to play on the Middle Sunday recently (I think it was 2004?).

Federer will get a free pass to the quarters, as Haas withdrew due to a torn abdominal muscle. Too bad, for I think these two would have given us quite an entertaining match....

Both Williams sisters were saved by the rain! Serena was cramping badly actually... then they both came back and won. Thank you god! Smile

The oldest pair ever... Arthurs (36yo) versus Bjorkman(35yo)!!!

Nalbandian was completely washed out by Baghdatis... Yeah!!

Nadal was frurstrated by the rain... went into 5 sets.

Federer will have 4 days off in a row

Berdych easily into the 4th round... imagine if he actually beats Nadal... remember last year? Twisted Evil
Tennis fan

Oh and another thing... for the second consecutive time a Baghdatis-Nalbandian match was interrupted by rain. The previous one was the Semi at last year's Australian Open. Shocked

Federer's must be laughing right now... especially since Nadal squandered a match point in the tiebreak.

After the match, Wayne Arthurs announced his retirement.
x.doublea

Relatively big upset... Vaidisova trumps Mauresmo 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-1. Mauresmo is quite furious: http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/ne...-07-03/200707031183478590750.html

Poor Rafael continues to wait again, at 4-4 in the fifth....

Roddick leads Matthieu 62 65.
Tennis fan

I am not surprise Momo lost.
Expect Nadal to loose too.

This is seriously problematic. It's going to be Wednesday of the 2nd week and there are still 3rd round matches to be finished! Shocked
PSALT

Ana Ivanovic took out Nadia Petrova 6-1 2-6 6-4 Cool

Marion Bartoli upset Jelena Jankovic 6-3 in the third. Very Happy

I have been saying it over and over again. Jankovic plays too much. Not only will she end up injured, it hurts her Slam chances. Having played 7 weeks in a row, do you honestly think she would have lasted mentally through two weeks and have had any shot at winning a Slam?

yes...they should really listen to the players about doing away with no play on the middle-Sunday. Nalbandian took an angry swipe at the Wimbledon Committee about this in his interview following his loss to Baggy.

It is time to modernize the schedual of play on the middle-Sunday.

1991, 1997 and 2004 all had to have play on the middle-Sunday.

The '91 Men's Doubles (won by Stich/McEnroe still had to be played on the Monday after the finals...it was a great match too...they opened the grounds for free...)
x.doublea

Well, there would be quite a bit of 'debate', I think, for tradition still remains so important. Didn't it take Wimbledon 20 years to switch from white to yellow felt?

Modernize is a good word....
x.doublea

Nadal is finally through... 7-5 in the fifth.

Serena has been knocked out by Henin in three sets. Henin nearly cracked, but managed to maintain composure.

You never seize to amaze me with your knowledge of so much detail history on Wiimbledon. I also know that you have been there.

Anyhow, we now have 4 days to play 4 rounds! This is sooooo bad for the players.....
PSALT

Women's semifinals are set.

Justine Henin v Marion Bartoli

Ana Ivanovic v Venus Williams

Venus beat Kuznetsova 6-3 6-4.

Ana came back from a set and a break down, then 1-set all and a break down, then 3 match points down to beat Vaidisova 4-6 6-2 7-5. Cool

Also, Ivanovic will break into the top 5 after Wimbledon now Razz

Okay, I've got to crack on the commentating....as usual it is very nationalistic....durring the Henin/Serena match, Justine struck one of the most powerful, elegant, penetrating, and precise cross court backhands I've ever seen....Johnny Mac, Mary C and Ted Robinson were so wrapped up in their discussion about Serena they failed to mention what a great shot it was....I don't even think they saw it!

Now I know NBC thinks that the casual American tennis fan are only interested in American players, but my point is with this slanted coverage/commentating how could they not be? The powers-that-be of the sport have complained for decades about growing the sport...how come they cannot convince the television producers to widen their focus on other great players....I mean c'mon are James Blake, Andy Roddick, Serena, and Venuse the only tennis players? You'd think so with the slanted coverage.

....its real simple a great shot is a great shot...and a smart/crafty/skilled player is a just that, regardless where they were born.
Tennis fan

Yep! I totally agree. The coverage is so slunted.I wish I could get Eurosport

It bugs me that I cannot watch Baghy on TV... he is been playing great and has flown under the radar in court #13.

Well, even Nadal (beat Youzhny in five sets) played on Court 2 today.... poor Nadal will play a second-full match in-a-row tomorrow vs. Berdych.

About biased TV coverage, it's really too bad, but it's perfectly understandable. Similar to what happens at the US Open (all the Americans get the show courts, regardless of how they are playing!).

That could be said about all Slams. All four Slams (The Aussie less than the other three, IMO) put better players on secondary courts so their nobody players can be on the show courts. I find that obnoxious.

Absolutely amazing. Marion Bartoli stunned Justine Henin, ending her streak of 5 straight Major finals, 1-6 7-5 6-1. Very Happy I'm so elated for her! She is always being put down for being "fat". Amazing win.

She will play Venus Williams in the final. Marion will be ranked at least #11 Monday, she wil be top 10 if she wins the title.
J-man

Some amazing matches today Roddick vs Gasquet and Bartoli vs JH. Big upsets.

I've been away at camp for 3 weeks so that explains why I haven't been on in 3 weeks.

Shocked I was not expecting this... 6-1 in the final set!

Venus, obviously, is the heavy favourite (can't believe Richard Williams's original prediction might actually turnout to be true), but, I guess, who really knows? Bartoli has just put her name on the map....
Tennis fan

It definitely was French day with both Gasquet and Bartoli.

I heard on TV that when Venus won in 2005 and was ranked #14 it was the lowest ranked champion. By having Bartoli #18 and Venus #23 in the final we are guaranteed a new record. I am very happy for bartoli. She has got a cool attitude. Here is what she said when she beat Jankovic: "It’s not a big surprise for me. I’m a top 20 player. I’m not 200 in the world. I think I could be in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam. It’s not that big a surprise.”
Tennis fan

With regards to TV coverage, I was so happy when I realised that ESPN2 was going to continue with the Djokovic -Baghdatis match and not swicth to Venus-Ivanovic match. That match was on tape delay on NBC later.
How difficult would it be for the TV to have two simultaneous live matches?
Tennis fan

Today was a strange day....
I was bummed about Bahgdatis (he deserved to win), Roddick and Ana, but then I was happy about Venus, Djokovic and Bartoli and Gasguet.
J-man

Great playing by Gasquet and Bartoli. Really disspointed by Roddick.
Tennis fan

Donald Young is in the Boys finals. This is his last year on the juniors tour as he turns 18 this month. Hope he wins! Very Happy

Djokovic retired; Federer easy over Gasquet..... another Nadal - Federer final - both chasing history and Borg's records.

Venus and Bartoli getting ready to start. While I do want Venus to win, Bartoli kind of grows on you. She is very likeable Very Happy
I guess Richard Williams prediction will come true, even though he probably just said it out of arrogance.

Borg, Martina, Billy Jean and the iron lady all in the stands watching... only 007 missing... Wink
J-man

Venus is a Wimby champ again with a 6-4 6-1 win over Bartoli. BTW, who is Young playing in the final? The mens starts at in about 20 minutes.
Tennis fan

The final was AMAZING!
Nadal deserved to win, but hats off to Federer for going deep inside to turn the game around and save those 4 break points in the fifth. I was also please to hear him say that luck was on his side, instead of him making another arrogant comment after winning.

Johny Mac said that Nadal must now use this as a motivator to come back more determined next year and win, just like he hid after loosing to Bjorg in 1980. I thought that was a great analogy.
J-man

The final was great. Nadal really hung in there after Federer took the 3 set in a tiebreaker. It started off real slow but then the match picked up it's pace and turned out to be a good one.

Donald Young ended up winning his Wimbledon final also. Congrats to him.
Rattler

Wow!....a match like the men's final today is exactly what the sport needs to grow the game. A great match that no matter who won I was still gonna be totally satisfied with watching the entire match....both players deserved it, and both brought their "A" game in the finals.....Easily the best match of the year....so far.

How scarry is Nadal that he showed no signs of fatigue after playing so much tennis leading up to the final?

What a great rivalry we as tennis fans have to enjoy...Fed wants the Roland Garros title but Rafa is standing in the way...and Nadal wants the Wimbly title.....but Mr. Fed has dismissed him twice.....it will be very interesting to see which player will get what they want first.

I know Fed's chances of getting the Roland Garros title are growing slimmer with each passing year....realistically he has next year and maybe 2009 at the outside.

Rafa....on the other hand is sitting pretty at Wimbly he has many years to challenge for the title.....he will one year win Wimbly....I'd love to see him take the Roland Garros and Wimbly back-to-back...but I'd also like to see Roger get the ever elusive Grand Slam though....

(Edit) The only thing that remains to be seen is will Rafa disappear (mostly) for the rest of this year?...as is his pattern, or will he challenge at the U.S. Open?.....I'm guessing we will not see Rafa firing on all pistons until Dubai next year.
Rattler

After seeing the Roddick/Gasquet Quarterfinal....I expect (as I have for a while now) to see some great progress from Gasquet.
Tennis fan

There are a lot of young guns ready to shine. In addtion, to Nadal and Gasquet, we also have Djokovic, Baghdatis and Berdych.
J-man

I think Gasquet is a bit overhyped. But he's young and the hardcourt season could be time for him to shine

Surprised no one has mentioned yet, but Federer pulls it out in five, and, subsequently matches Borg's Wimbledon winning streak.
