Tennis Masters Cup RaceThe race has begun...well, it actually began to take shape when Federer qualified at Roland Garros. Absolutely unheard of someone qualifying so early into the year. Nadal has joined him with his semifinal win over Baghdatis.

Might as well put in something for women too. Looks like Justine and Amelie will be the top runners for the Championships. JHH is in the lead because she got to the final of AO and Wimby and won the FO. Mauresmo should be right up there with her. Nice for the one handed backhanders to be leading the tour now.

Yes, it is nice to see that....Unfortunately, they are like the only two one-handers in the top 50....
|

There are more, very few more, but they are nowhere near as beautiful or effective as JHH's and Mauresmo's(aka Schiavone). Like, you just don't see the *flashiness* of the shot.

That is the earliest anyone has qualified. Also, Bryan/Bryan and Bjorkman/Mirnyi also qualified for the TMC.

Yes, it's scary...that shows that both the singles and doubles games on the men's side are dominated by two people/teams....

In their Wimbledon final, the Bryans didn't make any unforced errors during the 2nd and 3rd sets. Yet they still lost the 2nd.

That's pretty remarkable...how can you lose a perfect set?

OMG I just saw the ATP Race Rankings for a long time (I've only been looking at the entry ranking), and no wonder Federer qualified by RG:
1. Federer 1017 Points
2. Nadal 735 Points
3. Lubicic 367 Points
4. Nalbandian 355 Points
5. Ancic 318 Points

Federer is in serious danger of losing the #1 spot. he has many more points to defend for the rests of the season than Nadal.

Yes, I know in the entry rankings he's in danger, but he has such a margin in the race. Like, 1017 in early July? He usually reaches that total in like September-October.

the entries are much more important, win the Champions Race and you get a nice car and get to compete in the Masters Cup. get to #1 and you will always be remembered.

For the firs ttime this year the top-10 of the ATP rankings and the top-10 of the 2006 race have the same players.

The problem is that Federer only loses to Nadal. As long as they remain the top 2 in the rankings, Federer will beat everyone else and lose to Nadal in the finals. That way, he would always be number 1 because of his runner-up points.

if Nadal wins the USO (which is quite possible seeing his result at Wimby, it will be slower there and favor him more.) he will take over the #1 spot I believe.

Yes Nadal has to take advantage of the tournaments he has no points to defend and even add more to his schedule. It would still be very close with Federer's RU points.

If their runs at the US Open Series are the same as last year, and Nadal beats Federer in the final, he will not be Number 1:
1. Federer 7260 -300=6960 (after US Open
2. Nadal 5125 +925=6050 (after US Open)

ok, here are some changes in the rankings,
Venus has fell out of the top 20, Roddick and Hewitt are out of the top 10, Serena sinks to 140, Blake is #6, Ancic #7, Stepenak #8, Robredo #9, and Baghdatis #10. Dementieva jumps to #6, Kuznetsova #7, Schynder #8, Pierce #9, and Davenport #10

That is why Nadal needs to defend all his points and get points from tournaments he didn't do well last year (Cincinnati 1st round).

I am glad and suprised that Davenport didn't fall out the top 10.

If Nadal beats Federer at the final of Cincinatti, things would be very interesting (assuming Nadal wins the US Open):
Nadal 6050 + 495= 6545
Federer 6960 - 150= 6810

The only problem is Nadal would have to play the same long schdeule as last year. He will already lose points this week from Sweden. The good thing is Federer only plays the 2 masters and US Open, so Nadal has a chance.

If Nadal's lucky, Federer will skip Canada again, which I think he won't. Perhaps Nadal will enter some hard court events?

I am very happy as well. I hope to see her at the Bank of the West this year. Please make it deep Lindsay, I only have SF and Final tickets!

So, leftys, what's your full schedual? Both men's and women's tournaments?
|
leftys_rock
|
No, don't have time to catch the men's in LA. And i'm going to make my parents bankrupt if I buy any more tickets. Start off in the Bank of the West SF and Finals. Then go to San Diego and the Acura Classic for also the SF and Finals. And finally go to the JP Morgan Chase Open for all the QFs, SFs, and the Final. Tennis tickets are so expensive! My total is like $1500 dollars for tickets alone! Without hotel, food, plane tickets, etc.!

x.doublea
|
Wow, that's a lot of money, but I think it's worth it. I'm so jelous, I wish I could do something like that, you're so lucky. Too bad that you couldn't catch LA though, you know, with it most likely being Agassi's last appearance in a non-Masters Series/Grand Slam event.

I wish I could have made a trip down to IW earlier this year(dang school.. ) but going to these three is pretty good. The Acura Classic field is very strong this year(please no pullouts, please no pullouts, please no pullouts) with 9 of the current top 10 attending.
|
x.doublea
|
Wow, that's quite amazing, nine out of ten. Isn't Acura Classica a Teir II event? Teir I events often don't get nine out of the ten top 10 players....
|
leftys_rock
|
It's a Tier I. Last year, there was a pretty weak field because of LOTS of injuries. Davenport, Sharapova, the WS, and other big names pulled out and lots of high seeds lost early, like Clijsters. Sugiyama got to the final, losing to Pierce.
|
x.doublea
|
Thanks for clearing it up for me. I remember there were many injuries last year, so I remembered it wasn't the greatest of tournaments. That's why I thought it was a Teir II, but the tournament appears to have the potential of being one of the best this season.

when will you be leaving Leftys, and how long will you be gone?

I will be leaving for San Diego in three and a half weeks. But I should still be posting regularly though; as long as I have an internet connection. And I will be gone until the end of the JP Morgan Chase Open. I'll watch the Bank of the West, but i'll still be at home.

This Nadal v Federer race may have been over just a day after the Wimbledon final. Nadal only just escaped a car crash.
