Tennis Elbow...ARGHi am starting to develop some tennis elbow, how are some good ways to get rid of it, or at least weaken it?

If you HAVE to play, get one of those armband things, but the smart thing to do would be rest it.

oh, ok thanks jbors!

Yes, resting it is the best thing. When I had tennis elbow, I got a therapist to sort of relax it as well in order to speed up the recovery process. Playing definitely won't help it....

do ice packs help at all?
x.doublea
Ice packs don't really do anything other than sort of sooth the pain. It won't make the condition any better....
Benchwarmer1
so basically i just need some time off is what you are saying
x.doublea
Yes...playing more definitely does not help the condition...as I learned painfully a few years ago....

You can see like an athletic doctor or something like that to see whether you can speed up the process, though.

ok, that's a relief, my brother is sick, and i just recovered from sickness myself...
i guess i'll just watch some tennis videos in my spare time. howlong do you think it will last, it is minor. but i stopped so it wouldn't get any worse

Perhaps a week or so, but the pain, I think, might come back. I think you should see an athletic doctor just to see what you can do to speed it up and prevent it from happening again (as I said in the above post).

Benchwarmer, here's some information on tennis elbow:
http://www.tennis-elbow.net/tenniselbow.htm
x.doublea
Your's shouldn't take that long to recover, since it's minor....
Benchwarmer1
i guess ice helps right after tennis
x.doublea
Yes, I guess it does, but still, try not to play for now....
Benchwarmer1
oh yeah, i forgot to thank you for the link
well... anyway thanks!!

No problem...here's another:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_elbow
It suggests acupuncture as well, but I wouldn't do that unless you trust the person who does it uses new needles....
Benchwarmer1
i don't trust anyone with needles, except for the doctor.

I hope you get better. I would rest it. Do you think you racket/string had something to do better
Benchwarmer1
i had pro hurricane on it, i blame that
x.doublea
Rather stiff unless you string it a bit looser....
Benchwarmer1
its pretty tight, strung at like 60
x.doublea
Ah, that might be why...try a softer string (Ex. NXT). Polyester can be pretty harsh on the elbow....
Benchwarmer1
i really want to try nxt max or tour, but anyway can lifting weights be good for preventing tennis elbow
x.doublea
I'm not sure...probably very light weights might help, but I'm sure heavy weights will cause more injury....
Benchwarmer1
what do you mean by light?
x.doublea
Light as in stuff like 3 lbs...heavy as in 10 (?)....
Benchwarmer1
so what about 8?
x.doublea
I would stick with six or under, but I'm not sure. Eight isn't too heavy....
Benchwarmer1
that's what i thought thanks x.doublea

But, if you start feeling the slightest amount of pain or stress in your elbow, be sure to stop.
Benchwarmer1
ok, when it goes away, what are some good warmups to prevent another occurence?
x.doublea
I think the website suggested to put like a band around the elbow when you play after. Icing it after also helps.
Benchwarmer1
like a wristband?
x.doublea
I think a wrist band is too soft and will slip off...something like an actual elbow supporter with (sort of) the shape of the elbow would work.
Benchwarmer1
like this?

x.doublea
I've never seen that before, but it looks like it will work extremely well.
Benchwarmer1
does it look good enough for someone like me to play with during a match?
x.doublea
Yes, but try to stay off the court for now. Resting is the best solution. That band should (I think) be used more for prevention, not as something to hide the injury.
Benchwarmer1
how does something like that work?
x.doublea
Well, the band sort of comforts the elbow and prevents it from straining, but it won't really fix it, if you know what I mean.
Benchwarmer1
ok thanks again!!

What about those compression sleeves some pro's are wearing??
x.doublea
Can you get a picture of one? I'm not sure what it is....
J-man
Let me go fetch one

Here's a site explaining them: http://www.underworks.com/health/481.html
Here's Ginepri wearing compression sleeves: http://cache.gettyimages.com/xt/71078431.jpg?v=1&g=afp&s=1
x.doublea
That's quite similar to the one Benchwarmer posted earlier...looks good. It will work.
Benchwarmer1
the ginepri one doesn't work though
x.doublea
Do you mean the strap or the link to the website?
Benchwarmer1
link to the site
x.doublea
Both work for me...not sure what I can do to help you, since I can't like modify the link or anything.
Benchwarmer1
that's ok
J-man
Yes the link doesn't work. I'll try to fix it.
x.doublea
Strange...it works for me.
