String tensionI have always wondered about this. Do tighter strings give or take power from your strokes? People say that the tighter they are, the more control/less power you have, but when I get new strings, I am able to hit the ball very hard. Is it the new strings or what?
leftys_rock
really is that what people are saying?? personally i feel that tighter strings give more power but less control so that is why pros use them because they are experienced in aiming the shot even though there is less control....
big server
tighter= less power
looser strings=more power
always has been, always will be.
leftys_rock
oh, then im sorry i gave the wrong information....but in comparison, do pros have tighter or looser strings than the average tennis player??
big server
it's really different, some(hewitt) strings it at like 42 and others apparently like Federer strings it in the 70's...but they have multiple tensions in their bags.
leftys_rock
oh....but the racquet they take out first to play with is probably their favorite tension rite?? or do they have different ones every match??
jaykay

I suspect there will be a lot of strategy behind this decision too at the pro level. Influencing factors would be the surface of play (clay/hard_court/grass etc), game of the opponent (hewitt/ginepri style grinder or roddick style wham-bam opponent) etc.
Generally speaking, at the pro level, these guys (and women too) are incredibly strong and mostly make their own power. So it is likely that they'll string their racquets for control (high tension). There would be enough exceptions to this rule though (it is rumored that Roddick strings his Babolat Pure Drive Team Plus with hybrid strings in the mid 40's at times).

It's mostly what Jaykay said, but the weather is also, the "colder" it is, the tension will be smaller.
leftys_rock
oh yeah i forgot about the weather....but i usually dont play in really "extreme" conditions cuz i live in the bay area but when its colder how much does it affect the racquet besides the string thing?

Pro's tensionI think you will find that Andy Roddick has the highest tension. I have heard that his racquet tension is about 60 to 65. Federer on the other hand has his racquets strung more loosely. Not because of power or control but feel. Less tension allows you to feel the ball on the strings for a longer time. I think that you will find, rather than control higher tension gives you more spin.
leftys_rock
oh...i didnt know that about string tension....i thought it just controlled how fast you hit..
x.doublea
Andy Roddick does use the highest string tension: an incredible 66 lbs.
Marat Safin has a string tension of 59 lbs. for his mains and 57 lbs. for his crosses.
Roger Federer has a string tension of 55 lbs. for his mains and 52 lbs. for his crosses.
Lleyton Hewitt and Mardy Fish has a string tension of 55 lbs.
Tin Henman has a surprisingly low string tension of 51 lbs.
Of course, these are just for their prefered racquets, as most players have different string tensions for their racquets.
x.doublea
Oh, and also, Agassi's string tension is similar to Roddick's, as it is strung in the 60 lbs. to 70 lbs. range.
John McEnroe's racquets were strung in the low 40 lbs.s for more feel.
Babzzzzz
Pete Sampras had his rackets strung around 75 lbs. He had custom made racquets that were made in such a way (frame size, weight) that took as much of the power out of the racquet as possible .
x.doublea
| Babzzzzz wrote: | | Pete Sampras had his rackets strung around 75 lbs. |
That's really something. It's amazing racquets can handle racquet tensions way above the recommended string range.
Babzzzzz
He used gut strings/catgut.
x.doublea
| Babzzzzz wrote: | | He used gut strings/catgut. |
So does Federer, Safin, and Roddick, but they all use polyester for the crosses.
Agassi used to use a gut/Kevlar combination, but has been using Luxilon Alu Big Banger strings for the entire racquet for approximately the past three and a half years.

Ok, I didn't know that. But there are a lot of string type's and ways to string them, then. I can imagine how difficult it is to choose the right strig=ngs.
x.doublea
Sorry, I made a mistake. Roddick and Safin (and Agassi used to) use polyester/kevlar on the mains, with the gut on the crosses.

Wow, your club stringer must be really good....it's better to ask him about your string questions.

It depends on what they like, but it seems that touch players like looser strings.

so like JHH??

| leftys_rock wrote: | | so like JHH?? |
I'm not sure, I only have the string tensions for some ATP players, but it seems that the average power player likes to have tigher strings. Henin-Hardenne has a special style, as she can alternate between being powerful and being a touch player.
leftys_rock

true....so probably a player like schnyder then....

serena played an opponent before she lost. i think the players name was carmile pin (correct me if i am wrong) and she had her tension down at 40 . they shaid she does that because she doesn't have alot of power in her game. and it showed because in the first set she had only like one winner
leftys_rock

yeah camile pin doesnt generate a lot of power....

She doesn't have much swing speed or rotation, so she needs a missile launcer in order to create power.

yeah....pin just tried to get the ball back....

To give you guys an idea how low 40 pounds is...junior racquets are strung at around 30 pounds.

Carillo: Sharapova's great isn't she?
Fernandez: Yeah, she definitely is. You know what's the best thing about her? She's affiliated with my husband. You know my husband makes about five percent of what she makes. So, it's my duty that I support her all the way and discourage her opponents as well as I can so my husband could earn more.
Carillo: I'll support you all the way. But you know, the girl has the most talent on the WTA. In a few years, she will really be successful, and both of us would enjoy it!
Fernandez: Yeah, I'll really enjoy the money. If you continue to support me, I'll give you some of the shares too!
Carillo: Count me in then!

It is what I tell the stringer at the pro shop to string my rackets at. I get all my rackets without string then purchase the string I like and get them strung to what tension I like at the club I belong to. That is how I know what tension my rackets are.
