Former top 10 player Puellus is considering making a comeback to the FTL Tour. In a statement to the press, he said,
"I watch so much tennis on TV; it makes me miss it all the time. With the new doubles tour beginning next year with a relaxed schedule, it seems more probable every day that I may return to the tour at some point."
Puellus was a consistent performer on the FTL tour and enjoyed a brief spell in the top 10 four years ago. Then, he won the Murray Indoors (his only career title) aswell as reaching the QF of the French Open. However, he soon fell out of the top 10, and eventually the top 20 as his form deterioated. By the start of Season 3 he was ranked 32 in the world and there were no signs of him improving. He started to consider retirement after the death of his father and even worse results. He had one last run at the Moroccan Challenge, where he reached the SF, but he retired from the tour a few weeks later after losing in the first round of the French Open. He enjoyed many big wins during his career, most notably his epic 4-6 7-6 7-6 win over NEA in the final of the Murray Indoors in Season 1. He had ambitions to become tournament director of that event in the future, but for now, tennis is the main thing on his mind again.
He gave an interview after his press statement:
1. How has life been for you without tennis? What has changed for you?
Puellus:
Honestly I've been relaxing a lot, especially the year after I retired. The thing is I miss it so much that this year I've been playing a lot of tennis, relatively of course. Training for the tour takes so much work so everything has felt so relaxing.
2. You say you are considering a comeback....When would you be aiming to make a comeback? Would you be prepared enough?
Puellus:
Hey, hey, I said maybe . Returning is something that is a really big deal; it's life changing. I'm just saying that I may want to play some doubles next year, and maybe I'll play singles. Just throwing it out there though.
3. Would you be more of a doubles specialist with a limited schedule or would you be back full time?
Puellus:
Pretty much I think. I always wanted to paly more doubles but singles just took over everything. I think having doubles at the big events will give it more popularity and so I think it should be good for the sport as a whole. I definately want to support that too; still, singles is not out of the question. We'll see .
