Vanessa Child justified her number 1 ranking at the Williams Series- Venus in Los Angeles, as she retained the title she won in Season 1. She beat giant killer Jbors47 in the final, from a set down, 4-6 6-3 6-4. This is her second title in a row, having won the Dementieva International a couple of weeks ago.
The event was packed solid as usual, and the tennis reached new heights in LA. The tournament was so competitive that 13 of 15 matches went to 3 sets. Vanessa Child’s title run started against recent Tier 1 Champion Aztec. She came back after losing a close first set to win 6-7 6-4 6-4. She then beat Mollusk in the quickest match of the tournament. In the SF, she was nearly out of the match against 4th seed PSALT. PSALT eased to the first set 6-3. Child sneaked a close second set in a long tie-break, and wrapped up the match 6-3 to repeat her Masters Cup final victory over PSALT. Jbors was the lowest ranked player in the bottom half of the draw, but played the best tennis during his impressive run. In round 1, he edged past 6th seed J-man in a final set tie-break. In the QF, he played one of the best matches all year. He broke the 14-0 unbeaten Season 4 record of Yodavitch in a thrilling encounter. Spurred on by an ecstatic crowd, he won 6-4 4-6 7-5 for the biggest win of his career. He produced a similar display to defeat 2nd seed Jennacourt in the SF. Once again, he prevailed 7-5 in the final set in another marathon match. That win ended the two year reign of this tournament by Jennacourt. The all-American final was highly anticipated by the Los Angeles crowd. Like all of his other matches, Jbors won the first set but dropped the second. He couldn’t stop a comeback this time though. Child raced to a lead in the final set, and despite some brief resistance from Jbors, she came through 6-4. This victory from Child is her second Williams Series title in a row, and means that she and Jennacourt are still the only players to win Williams Series Titles.Jbors moves up to a career-high of 13 in the world.
Other players made convincing runs this week. PSALT got his year up-and-running when he prevailed in a difficult section of the draw that was filled with some of the best players of the newer generation. He came back from a set down in both of his matches. In the first round, he beat Agassi2000 4-6 6-3 6-3, then overcame Australian Open Finalist dav6789 5-7 6-4 6-3. dav6789 can still be happy about his tournament, as he avenged his recent Murray Indoors Final defeat to leftys_rock in the first round. John Edelstein beat x.doublea 6-4 7-6 in the first round. Both players had been struggling with their form recently. Edelstein though, in danger of falling out of the top 10, came through the difficult match. However, he looked in poor shape as he went down to Jennacourt in the QF.
So that is the first part of the Williams Series. Next, the tennis world travels north to Sagniaw in Michigan for the WS-Serena. That is the last tournament before the claycourt season.
