[Season 4] (Day 7) PSALT's Preview: Dementieva International
For being the ‘ignored’ Tier II, the Dementieva International has quite a draw. The general consensus is that the Dementieva International is ignored in favor of the Tier IV event in Scotland, Murray Indoors. However, four top ten players are present. The tour truly can’t say many people are playing that well presently, with the Williams Series coming up, anybody having a good run here would be huge (unless your name is Stevos, one of two good players right now). There are not any first round matches ‘to watch’, so I will do the matches to watch with my picked quarterfinalists,
Jennacourt-Stevos – Stevos has had the second best year so far (I could see an argument putting him down to third or fourth because of his Aussie, but he is the second best in my mind), Jennacourt has been mediocre at best. Nevertheless, Jennacourt is quite possibly the best hardcourter on tour when playing well. If she can patch her game together before their match, she can get the win.
Phobe-Doublea – Neither have been playing terribly well. Doublea did have a good run in Adelaide, even so, besides that one event, he has yet to show form deserving of anything more than a fluke semi run.
I have an interview with Dave today; he will be playing in the Murray Indoors, and event you will be foolish to miss as well,
Q. You return to the UK, what's it like to play in the few events in your home country? Should the ITF give more events to the UK?
I love playing in the UK. The crowds are always so good to their home players. I have always received great support from them as has NEA and the other Brits on tour. The Murray Indoors is a great tournament that always has higher tier draws. It would be lovely to have more events in the UK. Most of the events in the UK attract high quality draws and make a lot of money for the tour. Why not add more? Our grass courts are top notch, and we also have many indoor facilities.
Q. What do you think of the years of PSALT and NEA so far? Two of the premier members.
I don't think I can say much right now as we are barely into the season yet. NEA hasn’t been playing his best on a consistent basis for a while, but he has always got his season up and running at the Murray Indoors and Romania Clay Open. I expect him to do the same this year and have a good claycourt season this year. I think PSALT has felt the pressure of being at number 3 in the world, and maybe his Masters Cup loss is still in his mind. I really don't know. The pressure has worn off a bit now, so perhaps he will play better now. Like I said though, there is still plenty more left of the season.
