[Season 3](Day 33) Top seeds have early US Open exit

The US Open started a bit like Wimbledon, with many of the top seeds going out early.

After the first round was completed without too many suprises, one of the biggest ever upsets happened. In the second round, world number 1 and top seed Jennacourt faced Jbors47, ranked 32. Both players had been playing well recently, but on completely different levels. Jennacourt, having won Wimbledon, also won the Petrova Cup and Agassi Open during the summer. Jbors won the Mirza Grass Challenge before transerring his game onto hardcourts and winning the Pennsylvania Challenge. Having lost the first set, Jbors rallied back from 1-4 down in the second to level the match. He then went down 2-4 before seizing control of the match and closing it out 7-5 in the final set for a huge upset. He then produced another upset against former world number 1 Yodavitch to reach his first grand slam QF. He will play the 9th seed NEA, who is having a resurgance in form. Having had a miserable season so far with only a few highlights, he comfortably beat home favourite PSALT 6-4 6-3.

Another big upset took place in the second round, as Dreyfus defeated former champion and 4th seed John Edelstein. Edelstein, who recently won the Clijsters Classic, looked in complete control of the match. However, Dreyfus recovered and got to a 5-3 lead before winning the set on a tie-break. Things remained on serve in the final set until another tie-break ensued. Dreyfus raced through this one 7-2 to win the match. He continued his good form with a straight set win over Adelaide. Dreyfus plays 5th seed Tricatrina. The defending champion has been making quiet progress through the draw.

3rd seed Bizet followed Jennacourt and John Edelstein out of the US Open in the second round. He lost to another young player, Benchwarmer1. The young American, cheered on by a huge crowd at the Arthur Ashe stadium, played the best match of his life and won 7-5 6-4. Former finalist and 14th seed Stroganoff however proved too much in the next round and won in 3 sets. Joining Stroganoff in the QF was 11th seed x.doublea, who continued his good season with a 3-set win over Phobe. He is the only player to reach the QF at all of the grand slams this season.

In the bottom quarter, Ying-Chang upset 10th seed and French Open Champion J-man 6-4 3-6 6-3. dav6789, the 7th seed stopped her run in the 3rd round to reach his second grand slam QF. He will play 2nd seed Vanessa Child, who is the only player to reach the QF without losing a set. This is the 3rd encounter of the summer between these two players. dav6789 beat Child in the final of the Davenport US Champs, but Child got her revenge at the Pierce Grand Prix in the SF.

From this QF stage, there is still the possibility of a re-match of last year's classic final between Tricatrina and Vanessa Child. Those two are the highest seeds left in the draw.

The QF line-up looks like this:

Jbors47 v (9) Not_Even_Amateur
(5) Tricatrina v Dreyfus

(14) Stroganoff v (11) x.doublea
(7) dav6789 v (2) Vanessa Child
