[Season 3] (Day 43) PSALT's Preview: Canadian International
The YEC qualifiers will be decided here in Quebec City. Phobe, Dave, and NEA are the three fighting for a spot. Phobe, who was a frontrunner of this group, has slipped to No.9 with a semi to defend here. She’s in Dave’s quarter, so really isn’t the favorite to defend her semi. If Dave can get the win, he will assure himself a spot in the YEC. NEA on the other hand has a softer draw; crowd favorite Doublea is the only person who can stop him from assuring himself a spot. Defending champion Bizet, who has done nothing for who knows how long, is seeded second. Defending his title is very unlikely for him. I will hurry up and post “matches to watch”,
Jennacourt-Jbors – Jbors has upset Bizet and Phobe, Jennacourt hasn’t been playing great, and Jbors is more than capable of an upset here.
Dave-Stevos – With a chance to qualify for the YEC, Stevos is not the dream first rounder. Dave is going to have to deal with rabid Canadian tennis fans, people who don’t get much success, so they will be willing to do anything to get it. No, no, I’m kidding.
Yodavitch-Mollusk – Yodavitch has been amazing in his comeback, he will now have a true test in Mollusk. Mollusk, who has brought to life his dieing career this season, will make it a good match.
So, I have an interview with Yodavitch today.
Q. Since your comeback you have won more titles than you had in your entire career before the back injury. Is the "fire" there now? No offense to you, but you seemed far from hungry for titles before.
Yodavitch. It definitely took a while for me to get my timing back. I has immediate success in the lower tiers, but against more experienced players I just wasn't "match tough" enough I guess you'd say. Only recently has my form begun to really come back and I am playing well now in the big events too. One thing that I have realized after coming back from a long injury is how much I love the sport. I in a way this break allowed me to mature a bit and in finals now its like I have nothing to lose and I'm just relaxed. It was never like the before.
Q. What is it like to go from top 10 player, getting huge appearance checks, to being ranked 20-something with a spot in Tier I's not even being a sure thing? Humbling I would imagine?
Yodavitch. Yes well it is quite humbling, but that's what happens. You can't control random injuries any more than you can control the weather. It's been really hard for me especially last year when I just felt my career was slowing dissolving. Now I want to get back to where I was and do even better. Of course doing better will always be my top goal.
Q. What expectations do you have now? Are you aiming for a top 10 spot again, Tier I titles, or even Slams again? Or are you content with whatever comes your way?
Yodavitch. Definitely. I have no more bottled up emotions of doubts in myself; every match is so great. I just love playing tennis again. Right now I am simply getting more practice. While I still don't feel my best, I'm getting there and each tournament I feel more comfortable. Maybe not better, but definitely more comfortable. All of this preparation will be for the Australian Open where I won my only grand slam. That is where I want to play my best once again. I will not be happy with a top 20 ranking, so I hope to push forward and get back into the top 10 where I hope I belong.
