After a surprising Tier I in Laguna Beach, the upcoming Kuznetsova Classic promises to be much more straightforward. After Child backed out of the event, citing a quad strain, Jennacourt was promoted to the top spot. Without the possibility of matches between three big names in Child-Jennacourt-Trinky, the only hope for a good match appears to be Tricatrina-Jennacourt, a rather dismal outlook for a Tier II. I will have Child’s statement on the state of her injury later in my preview. The Kuznetsova Classic is a part of the USO Series, and one of the many large events coming up leading to New York City. Like I said before this is truly a boring draw with only one or possibly two matches to look forward to. There are two members present, top 10 staple NEA, and underachieving grasscourt specialist Agassi. There is little controversy lately, so I will stop digging for things to talk about and get to the interviews. I have interviews with Jenna and Dave. I also have Cecil’s take on her double event and I got Child to talk about her interview. Enjoy, Cecil will be first,
Q. What was the reasoning behind playing two events in one day?
Cecil:
My coach, he sign me up for two, and well, I cannot do thing about it. Uhh, I dunno the airplane ticket, it was cheap and more cheap than pulling out, because of uhh...the fine? Yes the fine very expensive.
The scary thing is she has lived in the US her entire life.
Secondly, Child,
Q. What is the reason for pulling out of the Kuznetsova Classic? How long are your expected to be out?
Child:
In the last set in the Davenport U.S. Champs final I pulled my right quad and it really hindered my play for the set. It needs some rest so I had to pull out of the Kuznetsova Classic. I don't think it will be too serious and I hope to get back on the courts in a few days.
Jenna is third,
Q. How does it feel to be a Slam champion now? Is it refreshing to no longer be the "Queen of Choking"?
Jennacourt:
Well yes it's really nice. I feel so great now and to finally get over that semi final hump just gives me so much confidence.
Q. Are you surprised it happened at Wimbledon instead on hardcourts where you have found more success?
Jennacourt:
Yes I have to say I am. I always consider myself better on hard courts, but after my success at the Roddick Open this year it wasn't that strange for me to win there.
Q. Bizet is now the tour choker, will he ever win a Slam, or will he always be the "Could have, should have, but never did" guy?
Jennacourt:
No, I think he can come through. He has had some tough losses, but so did I, so I don't think you should ever say never.
Q. J-man admitted to sneaking into a pub, should he be punished by the Tour? Activities like underage drinking, and getting a bear drunk do not reflect well on tour.....
Jennacourt:
Certainly that is not good behavior for a grand slam winner, but it's up to the tour whether he should be punished. Personally I hope someone reprimands him. He should know better than to humiliate him and the tour like that.
Q. Is the USO your to lose now? On your favorite surface you surely must be the favorite.
Jennacourt:
Well I hope I can come through there. It's my home country and probably the tournament I want to win the most and have since I was just a kid. I'll give it my best!
Dave is last,
Q. You have just won a Tier I, did everything just click this week? Wins over three former No.1 (Child, JoJo, and Yodavitch), huge win is it not?
Yes, this is the biggest title of my career. I am playing extremely well right now, everything feels fantastic. Things weren't going very well during the clay and grass seasons, I didn't feel too good. It turned around at the Petrova Cup, where I beat Bizet and Yodavitch. That tournament was really good for me, and I was able to get my game going. This title is a great achievement, and gives me more confidence in the future. The best part of it was the win over Edelstein. He has been the most dominant player, in my opinion, over the last few years. I have lost a few important matches to him in the past, but I am really happy to finally beat him.
Q. Does the fact that you greatly look up to the tournament's namesake make the win all the more special?
I suppose it does. I mean, this was a tournament I set my sights on when I first started, as well as the grand slams. I really wanted to do well here, where Lindsay has also had great success. When I first played here, it was amazing, and I knew it was my favorite tournament. To win this tournament was always one of my goals. It feels great to have won it now.
Q. Child claims she pulled something in the last set, believe her or not? Or has she proven she will do anything to belittle her opponent when she loses to them? Any harsh words exchanged between the two of you?
I don't really care what Child has to say; I am just going to enjoy this win. To be honest, I didn't really notice a problem with her, mainly because I was focused on my own game. I will not get into arguments with her again, as it threw me off my game completely. I don't usually get involved in this anyway.
Q. You now jump up to No.7, higher than countryman NEA. Does being ranked higher than him (he is always said to be the UK's "Golden Boy") let everyone know that you are not in his shadow? Has he said anything to you since the rankings were released?
Well I have been ranked above him before, but that was when we weren't as big. I think NEA has been in a slump for a long while now; he has not been playing anything like he was last year. I think NEA has had more spotlight in the UK because he has played better than me there. I think people have taken a different view to things this year, though, as I have been playing better on the big stage and been ranked in the top 10. I have been going ahead of him this season, so I have got more attention from the media ad everything. I think it's good for British tennis that we are both at the top. As far as I know NEA is happy for me, but I think he is more concerned about playing better tennis right now.
