[Season 3] (Day 27) PSALT's Preview: Davenport U.S Champs

The USO Series is underway with its first Tier I, the Davenport U.S Championship. Beautiful Laguna Beach is the host of this event. A favorite of players due to its wonderful weather, the draw is usually one of the best outside of the Majors. JoJo and Vanessa have met in the final the last two years, Vanessa taking the first, John winning last year. There are multiple interesting matchups in the first round, Child-Ying-Chang. Child is known for being vulnerable in early rounds, Ying-Chang has come alive after her tantrum over an innocent question earlier this season. Add to that Child saying Chang has “issues” earlier this season and it will be a catfight. Then NEA-Leftys, NEA who is 1-5 against the gritty American, must be ready to slip things in her drink. Leftys has the game for faster courts, so NEA will have to play one of the better matches in his career to pull it out. Dave-Aztec, Dave is an extremely talented hardcourter, and Aztec has all the confidence in the world after having a surprise run to the Wimby semi’s. Finally there is Bizet-Yodavitch. Yodavitch was on the top of the world over two years ago, winning the AO Open, and claiming the No.1 ranking, frankly though, he has sucked since, only two titles. He has an impressive comeback in France before Wimbledon, and an upset is possible. I have interviews with Jennacourt and Child today. Jenna will be first,

Q. How does it feel to be a Slam champion now? Is it refreshing to no longer be the "Queen of Choking"?

Jennacourt:
Well yes it's really nice. I feel so great now and to finally get over that semi final hump just gives me so much confidence.

Q. Are you surprised it happened at Wimbledon instead on hardcourts where you have found more success?

Jennacourt:
Yes I have to say I am. I always consider myself better on hard courts, but after my success at the Roddick Open this year it wasn't that strange for me to win there.

Q. Bizet is now the tour choker, will he ever win a Slam, or will he always be the "Could have, should have, but never did" guy?

Jennacourt:
No, I think he can come through. He has had some tough losses, but so did I, so I don't think you should ever say never.

Q. J-man admitted to sneaking into a pub, should he be punished by the Tour? Activities like underage drinking, and getting a bear drunk do not reflect well on tour.....

Jennacourt:
Certainly that is not good behavior for a grand slam winner, but it's up to the tour whether he should be punished. Personally I hope someone reprimands him. He should know better than to humiliate himself and the tour like that.

Q. Is the USO your to lose now? On your favorite surface you surely must be the favorite.

Jennacourt:
Well I hope I can come through there. It's my home country and probably the tournament I want to win the most and have since I was just a kid. I'll give it my best!

Child,

Q. You lost your first match ever, in straight sets, to Stroganoff. Pin to your bubble so to speak?

Vanessa Child:
Yes, that was definitely a tough loss.

Q. Why do you struggle so much with Stroganoff? Bad play from you when you play him, does he raise his level, or maybe you are too distracted from your growing feelings for him? Child/Stroganoff/NEA love triangle?

Vanessa Child:
Shows how informed you are. Stroganoff IS A GIRL. And since I am straight there is no love triangle...you shouldn't even be a tennis reporter if you can't get a player's gender right. Anyway, I have had trouble with HER in the past, but she just caught me off guard that day and I didn't play my best.

Q. Time and time again you have been accused of not caring enough about tennis. They say you care more about your fashion line "ASSENNAV", you’re "budding", if you can call it that, television career (your one line on ER), and your new children books. What do you say about that?

Vanessa Child:
I say I'm #1 in the world and have three grand slam titles to my name, two of them Wimbledons. I do not have a television career and I shot those episodes in February. Just because I didn't win Wimbledon for the third consecutive time doesn't mean I don't care about tennis.

Q. What has happened to your boyfriend? He has done very badly lately, tell us since you are so closed to him, is he having family problems, physical problems, what? Spill your soul, what is happening to him?

Vanessa Child:
By boyfriend? I do not have a boyfriend, but I assume you are speaking of N_E_A, which the media seems to do. I don't know about his personal life or family problems and that is completely up to him to share or not. He is a great player and person and I sincerely hope that he gets out of his slump in the near future. Sometimes when you have so much success at an early age it's tough to constantly keep it up, but he will find his game again soon, don't worry.
