Tennis Magazine: Your victory over PSALT in the final of the Tier I Mauresmo Masters could not have been more timely. In many people's eyes you are now the favourite heading in to the much-anticipated YEC. Do you consider yourself a favourite and how are you preparing yourself for what many people call the "Fifth Major"?
Vanessa Child: Well obviously since Wimbledon my form has been much better. This fall has been great for me, especially since carpet is my least comfortable surface. I think my win at the Maruesmo Masters was the most meaningful of the fall because PSALT had taken out so many high quality players, and I was able to hold him off without losing a set. That really felt great, even though he wasn't a top player. About the YEC, I have not played of hard courts in a while, so I will have to start practicing on them to get the feeling again. I also, because I have been playing tons on tournaments for me, will not be defening my final from last year at the Canadian International and instead am getting ready for the Masters Cup or YEC. I think I will be a favorite and hope to meet John Edelstein in the finals if we are on opposite sides of the draw. He is probably my biggest rival and is definately the most experienced out of the others in the mix.
Tennis Magazine: Speaking of PSALT, was there any added spice in that final match between you and him? I noticed in a previous interview he referred to you as the "tour's prima donna" and suggested you would perhaps focus more on fashion than your tennis. It is fair to say that you have proven all of your critics wrong; coming back from your slump and storming up the rankings, beating the best players on your way! Was this final a last kick in the teeth to PSALT who, I noticed, you dismissed as not being "a top player"?
Vanessa Child: Oh, well I think that was already done at Wimbledon when after he took out John Edelstein, I beat him in the quarters. I doubt he still thinks that I am the tour's "prima donna", or else he is just full of it. I have proved my cirtics wrong already starting at Wimbledon, and now by my current form. My ranking says I am the 5th best in the world, but I don't think that has correct value in anyone's eyes. In my final against PSALT in the Mauresmo Masters, I did not think about him judging me, since I already took care of that at Wimbledon. I don't need to keep a grudge, os once I've proved myself I don't keep going with it. PSALT is a talented young player and will probably break the top ten next season, but as of now he is not in the same light as John, Bizet, Tricatrina, Jennacourt and players like them.
Tennis Magazine: Thankyou Vanessa for your time, we greatly appreciate it, the best of luck at the YEC from us at Tennis Magazine!
