Replay to be used at AOVideo replays to be implemented at Australian Open
October 3, 2006
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- The Australian Open will follow the U.S. Open and introduce an instant replay challenge system for disputed line calls.
The 2006 U.S. Open was the first Grand Slam tournament to introduce the video replay system, although the technology had been used at other ATP events.
The "Hawk-Eye" system will only be used on Rod Laver Arena -- the center court at Melbourne Park -- where two giant TV screens will be installed for players, officials and spectators to follow analysis of the disputed calls.
Australian Open spokesman John Lindsay said Tuesday organizers have yet to decide if they would limit the number of challenges -- the U.S. Open allowed two per set to review line calls -- or allow unlimited challenges.
Under the challenge system, a graphic rendering of the shot in question is played on the on-court video screen, with the ball's landing spot highlighted.
If the replay shows the original call was wrong, the player keeps that challenge. If the original call was correct, the player loses that challenge.
Prize money for the tournament, to be played Jan. 15-28, will increase to $14.95 million with the men's and women's singles champions each earning $960,000.
Roger Federer and Amelie Mauresmo are the defending champions.
Mark Edmondson, the last Australian man to win the national championship, will be inducted into the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame during the tournament. Edmondson, unseeded and ranked No. 212, beat John Newcombe in the 1976 final.

also, they will be speeding up the courts. I can get the article on that if anybody wants it.

I'm not sure whether speeding up the courts is a good thing, but the instant-replay is a must have nowadays....

Well that's good that tehy will use the challenge system. But speeding up the courts?! Just what Hewitt ordered. I think they should keep them slow. It could affect Nadal at this years AO

Another win for Fed then! Im really glad they got the instant replay, watching old matches without it is really kind of wierd now, since I wish they could challenge HORRIBLE calls *ahem* Serena-Capriata USO qf...

Come to think of it, I really don't like this speeding up of the courts. This basically means two US Opens a year.... What was wrong with Rebound Ace? The best champions in the past 15 years (Agassi, Sampras, Courier, Federer) all won it, so why change it? If you're good, you can still win on it. I guess Hewitt's not good enough....

Hewitt's bitching over it got on my nerves to no end. His arrogance in Slam (take him saying that Wimbledon "was a 2 horse race" between him and Federer in 2005 for example) grates on my nerves, if he can't win on Rebound Ace boo-freakin-hoo.

I can't believe they're calling it a 'break in tradition'. Wimbledon can be quite funny. They stick with 'tradition', and the tradition is often less accurate and not as good (Ex. they refused to use the lime-green balls because it 'broke' the tradition of the usage of the white ball). This replay system is just an improvement... it doesn't break any tradition at all. A 'tip of the hat' to Wimbledon for putting the Shot Spot system in place.

I do agree, tradition is what makes Wimbledon special, but some things need to be updated. There are already people that don't like Wimbledon's so called "old-fashioned" views, it is a good step to be being a little more fan friendly.

With the manufacturing of the roof over Centre Court in place, I wonder whether they will ever put lights over the stadium so they can have one night match per day.... Probably not. I can see that happening at Roland Garros, though.

I seriously doubt it, I think that would be overload. Anyway, I'm sure there would be many people against that (including me). The French however needs to get lights for night matches, a night match at Roland Garros would be very nice. AO night matches are just there, USO night matches are one of the most special things in tennis, FO night matches could be one of the better things in tennis as well.

Personally, I'm a fan of night matches, although I understand why many people believe it wouldn't work at Wimbledon. However, I feel that night matches might help lessen the effects of the delays due to rain....

not having day matches is one of the best traditions about Wimbledon. when Wimbledon doesn't allow night matches it is being classy, when other events don't they are being stubborn. double standard, yes, but that is the thing about Wimbledon, they can do things other events can't and come off looking refined.

I agree. Same rules also apply when there are no matches on the first Sunday. Only works at Wimbledon.

I'm glad the AO will use instant replay since it seems like such a no brainer. There are a few kinks to be worked out but for the most part tennis really can't screw it up like football has over the yrs. with all the timely delays and still not getting the call right. Tennis should have implemented replay 5 yrs. ago but I guess it's better now than later.
