Race to the Masters CupWith only a quarter of the season left, the race to the Federer's Masters Cup is heating up. Of the members, Dave, PSALT, N_E_A, myself, J-Man realistically have a chance of qualifying:
1. Vanessa Child - 3911 (+1)
2. Jennacourt - 3595 (-1)
3. Bizet - 3573 (0)
4. John Edelstein - 3276 (0)
5. Tricatrina - 3051 (0)
6. dav6789 - 2721 (+1)
7. Phobe - 2572 (-1)
8. PSALT - 2538 (0)
9. Not_Even_Amateur - 2261 (0)
10. x.doublea - 2216 (+1)
11. J-man - 2214 (-1)
Who's going to make it, who's not? I'm not sure how many points each person has to defend (I have quite little to defend, actually).

Can we PLEASE have a race ranking next season? I will even do it if someone shows me the ropes of it, cus it would make it a bit more interesting I think...
Anyway, I dont think anyone will pass the current 8. As far as I can remember PSALT and Dave didnt have too many points to defend. PSALT has a nice gap over NEA.

the only points I really have to defend is the Mauresmo Masters, besides that I didn't win any titles or make runs at big events. that is the only thing I have going for me. J-man has a HUGE amount of points to defend so I don't see him making it unless he makes some great runs in big events.

I am starting not to like Phobe. She is the Petrova of the tour, I also think her cheap shot at Sheila at the YEC last year was bad.

I think X.doublea has the best chance of making it, and Phobe will probably move out of the top eight. Bizet always does well this time of year, but considering the way he's played I don't know. Who knows what will happen to Jennacourt.

over Dave, NEA, and myself? Neither three of us have many points to defend, and atleast for Dave and I, we have big leads over him. I can see him overtaking NEA, but he will need to play great and have atleast Dave or I choke to beat us out. 300 points is a lot.

Like last year, they did well at these events, and now, they either have to do just as well or better than last season to "defend" those points.
|
PSALT
|
| jbors47 wrote: | | What do you guys mean by "points to defend" ? |
for example, I made the Mauresmo Masters final last year. I carry those points for my ranking until next year at the Mauresmo Masters, if I lose before the final I lose the difference between the points you earn in that round and the final, if I make the final I keep the points I already had, if I win then I keep the points I had and get the difference between winning the title and making the final. that answer was all over the place I know, but does it answer your question?
|
PSALT
|
having a race like that could be interesting yes, but what would the winner get?
|
jbors47
|
Yeah. But say if this year I was playing alot of Tier IVs, if I dont play in the tournaments I did well in and play in Tier I's and II's would I lose points because I didnt play in the other tourny?

| stevos14 wrote: | | So does anyone think I should do a race ranking next year? |

Yes, you would lose the points, but gain points for however well you did in Tier I's and II's.
|

I say you take the top 8 and the winner gets a certain amount of points added to their current total.

it depends, if you win that Tier III, then don't play in it the next year and end up losing first round in a Tier I that same week you would lose points. If you make a deep run at the Tier I you would gain points. to really find out all the different situation you would need to look at the WTA Race explanation, it is in the Rules somewhere.
|
jbors47
|
So does winning a match in a Tier I or II count for more points then. Because if I won a Tier IV this year, and then didn't play in it next year and lost in the first round, I would lose a shitload of points.

I say if we did it the winner would either,
1) Get to choose an apparel/racquet sponser
2) Would get a certain amount of points added to their rankings
3) The top three or whatever at a certain date could get automatic entry into the YEC
4) Possibly get a certain amount of points to add to their Skills for the next year, after that year they would then lose those points

The race results are the decider for the Masters Cup, not the standings points. However, at the end of the year the two are pretty much in the same order, minus the previous years master cup points which is the only event still calculated in the standings the week before the cup. ( confused yet ? - I am sure some of you get it )
If we had a race, Stevos and Jbors would have higher rankings.

that is one reason I don't like it being the decider for the Masters Cup. If different prizes were given it would be a little more interesting. then though, if Stevos wants to do it why not? if it wasn't a huge deal, but it was being pinned on you I would be against it. if Stevos really wants to do it though, why stop him?
also, one thing I don't like about the Porsche Race is it rewards playing a lot but never making deep runs even more than the regular rankings. that is why I don't think it should decide the YEC.

If you guys really want to do it, then we can. If you won a grand slam you will be accepted into the Masters Cup despite your ranking. Someone else will have to make the race rankings though, which will take a really long time. The good thing about it is that you don't have to worry about laster year's points (trust me, that is really annoying)!

Having a race is more realistic because those players that are outstanding for the calendar year would play at the end. Say if I would have won like 7 titles this year, but still not eclipsed the top 8, and the former world #1 whoever it may be didnt win any titles but just got the bare minimum amount of points to stay in the top 8. That wouldnt seem fair because overall that year I won more points that him/her, but didn't get into the top 8. The way it should be is the top 8 point getters for the calendar year make it into the masters cup, YEC, or whatever we have.

Are we currently running our ranking system on "best of 18" tournaments or not, because if not PSALT the 'playing a lot' cheat thingy wouldnt make any difference.
I think I could handle doing the race. Maybe if someone else helped me. But probably on my own. I like the idea of prizes for the winner.
|
x.doublea

It would have to be calculated like this then, if you were to follow the ATP rules (modified because we have 10 Teir 1s and there only 9 Masters Tournaments):
Point Total for Race= 4 Grand Slam points + 10 Teir 1 points + the 4 best results (point wise) at the Teir II, III, and IV levels

stevos, playing too many Teir III's and IV's wouldn't work, because only four Teir II, III, and IV's would be counted (if one Teir I is dropped down to a Teir II, then the top five results would count).

It would if our ranking system was not best of a certain number of tournaments, but just all points combined.

There wouldn't be much difference to the Entry system then... the only difference would be that you saw how many points you were earning in the current year....

Exactly. I see no point in having it if all points count. The only difference at the end of the year would be the previous year's Masters Cup, which is just stupid IMO. If we would do it it would be like x.doublea's method, not including all tournaments. It will be tough because Stevos would have to find every player's best 4 tier II, III, and IV results (out of all of them), which is up to him if he can handle all that.
I also like PSALT's idea of not having the Race be for the Masters Cup. But that is only if x.doublea's method does not work out.

I dom't really like the idea of a race. There isn't much point of it if they are identical to the real rankings, and it could get too complicated with all the best of 5 tournaments or whatever they use. It is also another extra thing for Percy to do that isn't reakky necessary. If we were going to do it, then I think the only prize (if there is one) that is suitable is the sponsorship. It is unfair to have extra points or training points.

Well I have already started, so I think we will have it. But there will definately be no training points and rankings points added for the win at all. I don't really see the point of a prize, since usually the winner or the race would have most sponsorships offered to them anyway.

Lol, PSALT why are you always the one?
For each player here are the steps (all points are only from this current season):
-Add up their grand slam points
-Add up their tier I points
-Add their 4 best results from either tier II's, III's, or IV's.
-Count the total number of tournaments they played in this year (This does in the []).
-Make sure you don't cheat !

So, realistically, there is some kind of a race on, more than last year anyway. 200 points is still a fair bit to catch up but I am in the best form of my season and I think there is a chance I can knock Phobe from the top 8!

So, realistically, there is some kind of a race on, more than last year anyway. 200 points is still a fair bit to catch up but I am in the best form of my season and I think there is a chance I can knock Phobe from the top 8! |
please do! three members in the YEC would be huge!

I think maybe we should just stop doing te race and wait until next season, since it will serve no purpose. I know we have already put a lot of work into it, but there really isn't any point in more work.

I agree, why do all this work if it won't decide anything? Also, it will just be easier next season, now we have to look back and dig through past results. Stevos (or whoever) can start fresh next season and it will seem more like a race than having your name pop up at random like what is happening now.

9. Not_Even_Amateur - 2377 (0)
10. x.doublea - 2166 (0)
11. J-man - 2120 (0)
So then, let us analyse:
NEA has two Tier III victories to defend
PSALT has a Tier I Final to defend
Not sure on Phobe and dav but really, the race is quite on if I can keep my form. I don't think x.doublea or j-man can realistically make it and I highly doubt that I will. Let us just hope Phobe collapses!!

Phobe has A LOT of points to defend. She was one of the hottest players indoors last season. She could very likely fall out of the top 8.

the only thing I know about Dave is that he is the defending champion in a Tier III hardcourt event.
for Phobe, she has two Tier I SF's, 1 Tier I QF, and 1 Tier II QF to defend. That is much more than any member who is still in the race has to defend.

Let's hope we're all too much for him to handle! I have almost no points to defend... last season, after the warmup for the US Open, I couldn't win one straight match....
