Proximus Diamond Games (WTA)

Proximus Diamond Games (WTA Tier 2)

Antwerp, Begium

Tournament Profile

Tournament Website: http://www.sport.be/proximusdiamondgames/2007/eng/

This is one of the biggest tournaments of this part of the season in February. The singles champion receives the famous Diamond Racquet. Only Amelie Mauresmo is in a position to take it home with her. Venus Williams had the chance in 2005, when she led Mauresmo 6-4 5-3 in the final. Most attention this year will be on Kim Clijsters, the home favourite, who is playing her last event in Belgium. In honour of this, the tournament have opened 'The Kimuseum'. This is a collection of memorobilia of her career and her trophies etc.

The seeds are:

1. Amelie Mauresmo
2. Kim Clijsters
3. Nadia Petrova
4. Elena Dementieva
5. Patty Schnyder
6. Dinara Safina
7. Anna Chakvetadze
8. Ana Ivanovic

Other players in the draw are Anna-Lena Groenefeld, Tatiana Golovin and Venus Williams.

- This tournament started in 2002. Only Venus Williams (02, 03), Kim Clijsters (04) and Amelie Mauresmo (05, 06) have won the singles title.

- Clijsters is the only player to win both singles and doubles. She has also reached the most singles finals: 3.

- Cara Black and Els Callens are the only multiple champions in the doubles event.

I love the cheerleading thing!

Women's Singles 1st Round

Patty Schnyder (5) bt. Kirsten Flipkens (WC) 6-4 6-1

Dinara Safina (6) bt. Elena Vesnina 6-4 6-1

Anna Chakvetadze (7) bt. Elini Danilidou 6-4 6-2

Michaella Krajicek bt. Martina Muller 6-3 6-2

Virginie Razzano bt. Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-4 6-1

Good win for Schnyder, who is yet to reach a QF this year. Safina and Chakvetadze continue their great starts to the year, and could both get to the top 10 with a good showing in Antwerp. I am also glad Krajicek won because she is in a major slump right now. That is her first win of the year. She will play Safina in a re-match of last week in Paris (Safina won 6-4 7-5). Groenefeld is also in a slump right now, losing to Razzano!

Women's Doubles 1st Round

Nathalie Dechy / Vera Zvonareva (2) bt. Ekaterina Bychkova / Selima Sfar 6-1 6-2

Janette Husarova / Kveta Peschke (3) bt. Leslie Butkiewicz / Debbrich Feys 6-0 6-2

Caroline Maes / Yanina Wickmayer bt. Maria Kondratieva / Sophie Lefevre 6-7 6-4 6-4

Elini Danilidou / Jasmin Woehr bt. Margalita Chaknashvili / Ekaterina Ivanova 6-2 6-1

Comfortable wins for the US Open champions Dechy/Zvonareva and the 3rd seeds Husarova/Peschke.
