I know when you hit an overhead, it is very similar to a serve. I stand sideways and point up towards thta ball and get my feet in position, but often I hit the overhead long. I try to snap my wrist, but the ball still goes out by a little. What do I do???

time the ball better let the ball drop alittle more before your start your swing to hit it.

Yea, this hasn't really helped (sorry). I try to time it, but its still off. Letting it drop makes it even more wild. I won my match this weekend, but I missed a crazy overhead that was right to me. Instead it went about 3 inches long. What in the world am I doing ?

I did what I always do, I prepare for an overhead the propper way like I was intructed. Its just, my wrist snap seems right, but if it is the ball should stay in. I might be playing tomorrow, so this doesn't look good! I should be swinging up at the ball, and then snapping my wrist, right?

Right, except my serve goes where I want it to go, and my overheads always go in the same place. a few inches long. Never wide, never really long, but always a few inches long. WHY

maybe your contact point is off? or you can try to add more spin on your overheads for safe keeping if you would like

Do you mean actually hit it like a slice or topspin serve? That seems pretty tough! (because your toss when serving affects what spin you can put on it)

Agassi2000: I suggest that you position yourself such that the lob is dropping towards the right of your right shoulder (I am assuming that you are a right-handed player here) and instead of blasting it flat, give your overhead a slice action. This might help you cut down on the pace of your overhead and give you more direction and control on the shot. Point your shot to the 'no-man's land' (area between horizontal service line and baseline), closer to the horizontal service line.
From a mental perspective, assume (till the time you get this shot right) that the overhead is only a 'means to an end' and not the end in itself; meaning DON'T go for the outright winner on the overhead till you gain more consistency and make it a high-percentage shot.
Let me know if this works.
Cheers,
jaykay.

I never thought os slcing my overhead, just trying to add kick to it. I will try this out next time I play. Thank you

Depends on where you take your overhead. If it's nearer to the net, you don't aim forward but more down motion. If it's further back, you aim forward more for net clearance.
The best overhead is hit flat or sometimes with a slice (hardly though). Really have to do all the necessary drills to perfect the overhead. No two ways about it.
Hope that helps

The overhead is one of the most frustrating shots for me. I think position is very important in perfecting your overhead. I usually try to position myself slightly to the side and behind the ball to get the most impact into the shot. I almost always hit my overheads flat, cuz I really don't have much confidence on using any spin on the shot while playing in tournaments.

It is important not to open up your shoulders and time your feet moving back. I use 2 big steps to get into position and then hit slice at the highest point.

Yes. Trying to put spin on an overhead is a challenge. I usually try to just guide the ball to the open court. Your way of positioning for an overhead is a solid one.

Agassi2000:
You simply aren't snapping your wrist enough. Next time you hit an overhead, think about the angle at which your racquet hit the ball. If you hit it out and you're doing everything right, the problem is in the fact that you aren't angling the overhead shot down enough, which is sort of the point of an overhead. If you get more flick into the wrist and come down on the ball a little bit more you should be hitting great overheads.
However, don't change your shot too much, or you'll end up like me, hitting things into the net.

Whoops, I guess I didn't read every one of the posts in this thread. I'm glad you fixed the problem!

Snapping your wrist is very important in hitting a good overhead. Also positioning your body, and not taking the ball too high or too low.
x.doublea
Snapping the wrist may also create some extra power.
Bel Air-Basher
This shot always drives me nuts. I have a tendancy to hit long alot. I try to position myself correctly and try to take the shot at the right time, but I still hit it long alot. I will take your advice and try snapping my wrist and see if that helps.
