Clijsters has pulled out

The draws are out, and it is a very high quality one, even without Clijsters.
Justine Henin makes her 2007 debut as the top seed at this event. Defending Champion Amelie Mauresmo is the 2nd seed. Svetlana Kuznetsova and Nadia Petrova follow them. They all have first-round byes. It will be interesting to see how Henin will play here. I hope she has put her devorce out of her mind because it would be a shame to lose because of that. Mauresmo needs to rebound from her poor start to the year. She has won this event twice, but playing in front of home fans is always different to the regular tour.
Elena Bovina plays Lucie Safarova in the first round. I hope Bovina can get her career back on track but surely Safarova is the favourite here. Another big first round is 5th seed Dinara Safina vs Michaella Krajicek. Krajicek hasen't played well recently, but she can hurt almost anyone if she gets it together. I am rooting for Krajicek to do well here.
If seeds hold, the QF line-up will be:
Justine Henin v Patty Schnyder
Svetlana Kuznetsova v Nicole Vaidisova
Dinara Safina v Nadia Petrova
Anna Chakvetadze v Amelie Mauresmo
This line-up is great, and I don't think there will be much resistance from the unseeded players here unfortunately.
In the doubles, Black/Huber are the top seeds and Safina/Strebotnik are the 2nd seeds (just like at Gold Coast). Two-time Defending Champion Kveta Peschke is partnering Janette Husarova, and they are the 3rd seeds.
- Amelie Mauresmo will look to seperate herself from Martina Navratilova and Serena Williams, who all have the record of 2 singles titles.
- Kveta Peschke is looking to join Jana Novotna with a record 3 doubles titles.
- Martina Navratilova won the last of her 168 singles titles here in 1994.

To bad for Razzano. She has a nice game. She played well against Hingis at the Us open last year.
I think Mauresmo can take this title. I'm not sure how well JHH will do. Fop sure she will have a slow start. She has been going through alot and hasn't had much match play.

Shame Razzano didn't qualify, she is very popular in France. She has had wins over Hantuchova and Pratt (who has been in form) this year.
Women's Singles- 1st Round
Emilie Loit (WC) bt. Elini Danilidou 7-6 6-7 6-4
Katarina Srebotnik bt. Stephanie Cohen-Aloro (Q) 6-1 6-4
Dinara Safina (7) bt. Michaella Krajicek 6-4 7-5
Martina Muller bt. Agnieszka Radwanska (LL) 6-1 6-0
Nathalie Dechy bt. Tathiana Garbin 6-2 6-3
No upsets so far then. That is a good win for Safina, who won this in 2005 (beating Mauresmo). She is very close to entering the top 10 again, so a good run here could do that. Shame for Krajicek though, her misery continues. Krajicek is now 0-3 for 2007.
Women's Doubles- 1st Round
Elini Danilidou / Jasmin Woehr bt. Janette Husarova / Kveta Peschke (3) 3-6 7-5 6-3
Klaudia Jans / Renata Voracova bt. Emmanuelle Gagliardi / Selima Sfar 6-2 6-2
Gabriela Navratilova / Vladimira Uhlirova bt. Andreea Ehritt-Vanc / Martina Muller 6-2 6-2
So Kveta Peschke's hold on this title has gone.

Petrova beat Mauresmo 57 64 76(7) in a nail-biter!

Isn't this like the first time that Petrova saved a match point?

Safarova will win. Petrova looked under the weather. She was getting winded on short points. She was lucky to get out of that.

I finally got the chance to watch Safarova. I was extremely impressed. She's got talent. She has a huge forehand and a steady backhand. Good serve and not a horrible mover either. The only weakness that I found disturbing was her transition from the baseline to the net. It's horrid. She really needs to work on that. I did like her though. She'll be great one day.

Well, I think a lot of the women (and a lot of the males, in fact), have huge problems with mid-court tennis (transition to the net). Many of them would be much more effective if they knew how to approach the net and be effective there, even if they aren't naturals at volleying.
