Open 13 - Marseille (ATP)Djokovic lost in the first round to Youzhny 64 46 76(0)
J Benneteau (FRA) beat F Serra (FRA) 26 61 62
I was suprised to see this match-up in the first round but Youzhny did not make the top 8 seed. With 8 top-20 players it is the event of the week.

only thing I can think off is that there were no more WCs - Nicolas Mahut is also ranked high enough not to have to go through the qualies

Oh my! Masacre of the stars in Marseille! Davydenko, Ljubicic, Ancic, A Clemente and Djorkovic are all out!! That is seeds 1,2,3,4 and defending champion!
Has there ever been another ATP event ever where the top 4 seeds plus the defending champion lost in the first round???
I would really like to know...... Maybe I can post the question to the statistians at ATP.com
Btw, Mahut played in the qualies!

That's actually a great question... one which is way more interesting than the ones previously posted on there.

I ended up posting in the "contact us" section as they have removed the link where you could ask questions directly to Mr. ATP Statistics Grand Master ( ok he had a name but I forgot it, it was someone old who seemed to know it all! )

Oh NO! Baghdatis lost in the final. I was hoping he would win to extend the winning streak and also win a second final in front of a hostile home crowd for the opponent... anyhow, Simon was more rested and deserved it.

Unseeded Frenchman Gilles Simon earned his first ATP title, upsetting No. 7 seed Marcos Baghdatis 6-4, 7-6(3) in the final of the Open 13 at Marseille Sunday. It was the first meeting between the two.
Simon, who won the title without dropping a set, is the second Frenchman in a row to win the crown, following Arnaud Clement’s victory over Mario Ancic in last year’s final.
Baghdatis broke Simon when he served for the match at 5-3. The Cypriot started the tie-break with a mini-break, but then made a number of mistakes, pressured by Simon's aggressive shotmaking.
The 22-year-old Simon is the first Frenchman to reach an ATP final this season. Simon’s previous ATP final appearance came in April 2006 when he reached the championship match in Valencia (on clay). He lost to Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-2, 6-3.
Baghdatis, who saw his career-best nine-match winning streak broken, is still an impressive 14-4 on the season. His 14 match wins is an ATP-best this year. He won his second career ATP title in his last tournament in Zagreb (d. Ljubicic) on Feb. 4. The 21-year-old Cypriot appeared in his fifth career ATP final (2-3).
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Gilles Simon: "This is the most beautiful day of my tennis career so far. It's great to win in France, with my family and a lot of friends in the stands. Today I wanted to play every point since I knew that Marcos was a bit tired. It's unbelievable to win my first title without even losing a set. The crowd helped me a lot, I don't know how the match would have ended if we played somewhere else."
Marcos Baghdatis: "Gilles played a great match today. He was just the better player. I have been tired for a few days now and I was missing that important kick during today's match. It has been a great week for me anyway, the Marseille crowd was supporting me a lot and I had fun on the court."
