(Off-Season) Child wins Season-Ending Championships!

The Season-Ending Championships in Switzerland was again a celebration of successful season on the FTL Tour. The facilities in Geneva were top class for the world's elite players. Like previous years, the players were pampered throughout their stay. Everyone enjoyed the luxury of individual locker rooms along with instant services such as food, drinks and even massages. The host broadcastors did a superb job of televising the event all over the world every day. The stadium court was packed solid from start to finish.

There was much excitement for tennis fans in the run-up to this event to see who would qualify. Unlike other years, this year was not dominated by one particular player, so the YEC race went right up to the last day of the season. This year has been so open, that even one of the 4 different grand slam champions, J-man, didn't qualify. After the US Open, the top players gradually claimed their places in Geneva. Jennacourt was followed by Vanessa Child, Bizet, John Edelstein, Tricatrina and PSALT. There was a very tight battle for the remaining two places between NEA, dav6789 and Phobe. In the end, Phobe's great success last year proved to be his downfall. NEA and dav6789 claimed those final places to complete an exciting field, which was confirmed as usual after the Canadian Open final.

Soon after, the draw was released. Jennacourt, Bizet, PSALT and NEA were placed in Group A. Vanessa Child, John Edelstein, Tricatrina and dav6789 were put into Group B.

World number 1 Jennacourt was mostly disappointing. After her impressive straight sets win over NEA, she went down in her next two matches having won the first set 6-1 in both. PSALT suprised many by finishing on top after posting a win over Bizet. Bizet took the second place. The group play ended with NEA winning an exciting dead match over PSALT to lift his spirits.

Group B proved to be the most controversial group in the event's history. Vanessa Child dominated the group filled with off-form players; she won all of her matches in straight sets. However, second place was alot more closely contested. John Edelstein, Tricatrina and dav6789 all had a match record of 1-2, and a set record of 3-5. There were alot of arguements about how this would be decided, as it had never happened before. Despite alot of differing opinions, the tournament directors come up with a way. So, they came up with the idea to use games as the deciding factor which sent John Edelstein through.

The SF stage lit up the tournament. PSALT and Vanessa Child fought out tough 3-set victories. PSALT avenged his Ausralian Open final defeat to Edelstein with a 6-3 3-6 6-3 win. Child ended Bizet's run of two Federer Masters Cup titles, beating him 6-1 4-6 6-4. In the final, PSALT, appearing in his 4th major final, struggled to an opening set win. Child ran off with the second set to even the match, though. PSALT raced to a 5-2 lead against a seemingly disheartened Child. However, Child used all her experience to break PSALT back twice and level once again, at 5-5. By this time the crowd were going wild. Child won a marathon game to go up 6-5, but PSALT kept his determination up by saving 3 match points. However, moments later, Child feel to the ground having completed an amazing comeback to win her first Federer Masters Cup title. The crowd and the whole world of tennis were grateful for such a classic match to end the season. It has now been voted into the 'Greatest matches of all time' list, by the ITF.
