Right now, i'm loving Keane's old "Hopes And Fears" Album, first reply, awesome

I listen mostly to opera. In particular, the works of Puccini and Verdi, but I don't mind the bel canto composers (Bellini, Donizetti) or the 'verismo' ones (Ex. Masgagni, Giordano). French opera, like Gounod, isn't bad either. Not a big fan of Wagner, he has some great moments, but most of it is relatively dull and nonlyrical.
In terms of other classical music, I like the works of Tchaikovsky, Lalo, various Mozart and Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, etc.
As you can see, I'm a 'purist'- a listener of strictly classical music (well, musical theatre can be interesting).
dav6789
I usually like anything that sounds good, has a catchy tune. My favourtie type of music is rock or indie. Recently I have been listening to the Kooks a bit, but I don't usually get too involved in one band/artist.

In the classical world, I love Saint-Saens music. I love the Danse Bacchenalele from Samson and Dahlia. We're visiting the cemetery where he is buried when my orchestra goes to Paris in December.
In the pop world, I listen to what is generally popular at the moment.

I recently have become a big fan of Josh Groban, along with Hayley Westerna. Kelly Clarkson, Ella Fitzgerald, Andrea Bocelli, Mariah Carey, James Ingram, Goo Goo Dolls, along with others.
For classical music Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Beethoven, Haydn, and Rachimanoff (Sp?).

I love Mariah Carey music. As well as Goo Goo Dolls. Kelly Clarkson is ok, but it plays on the radio too much.

I am a fan of all kinds of rock. Mostly stuff that is along the lines of hardcore. Chiodos, Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu. I listen to some lighter stuff like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Incubus, The Fray, Taking Back Sunday.

I currently refrain from listening to Your Beautiful(James Blunt), Bad Day(Daniel Powter), Black Horse and the Cherry Tree(KT Tunstall), and Crazy(Knarls Barkley). God, those play on the radio WAY TOO MANY TIMES! I had to stop listening to Savin' Me by Nickelback even though I love Nickelback music because it played too many times.
jbors47
Yeah I hate Nickelback because they are played so fricken much its ridiculous. Same with Green Day. I am tired of that song by Snopatrol and any Breaking Benjamin song also.
Benchwarmer1
i miss the old music, like from when i wasn't born, like Led Zeppelin
jbors47
Yeah I listen to them. I have seen Kiss and Aerosmith in concert as well. My favorite classic rock has to be Queen though.
Benchwarmer1
I LOVE Queen, i also ike the Who
what's you're favorite song by Queen?
leftys_rock
Panic! at the Disco is awsome too.
jbors47
Benchie- Bohemian Rhapsody is BY FAR my favorite song of all time out of any band.
Leftys- I have their CD. Its good.
leftys_rock
Yes, I know, it's a refresher from the heavy alternative and rap right now. But the song names are sooooooooooo long. I also have Justin Timberlake's CD, Future Sex/LoveSounds. It's nice, the songs are longer than I expected. I had wanted to get Nelly Furtado's CD, but I only like 2 songs on there, Promiscuous and Maneater.
jbors47
Chiodos has really long song names also. My friends and I that listen to them just call them "song number 2, 3, etc etc."
leftys_rock
Yes, I try to find shorter terms for the song names, so instead of writing "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom And Suicide Is Press Coverage", I just write "The Only Diff..."
Benchwarmer1
Fall Out Boy also got some long names for their songs like "Our Lawyer Made Us Change The Name Of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued"
To jbors: That is my favorite Queen song too, but We are the Champions, Crazy Little Thing called Love, and Killer Queen are like my honorable mentions...
Benchwarmer1
we should start some games on here, leftys, like "The Song Game" if you know where i'm going with this
leftys_rock
With so few people, i'm not sure if this is going to work, but i'll give it a try.
Benchwarmer1
Might as well ya know

I also love the Queen; Bohemian Rapsody IS one of the two best classic rock songs ever. The other one IMO is Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin. I also like The Doors. My dad has been a fan of this music forever and he has been teaching me so many things about that music era.
On the other hand I also listen to a lot of rap and hip hop (not with dad! ) I like Sean Paul, Beyonce, Black Eye Peas, Shakira and others

Panic at the disco is definitely not my favourite, but I like "lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off". Wow, I think I have carpel tunnel now.
I really like indie bands, and some really well-known ones. Death Cab is my alltime fave, then Bloc Party is probably my other favourite band right now. Others favourite bands are Snow Patrol, Metric, Stars, Sufjan Stevens (amazing), Broken Social Scene, Kings of Convenience.
I am so sick of Green Day, and Nickelback is probably my least favourite band of all time (sorry leftys). I just cant stand them.

That's ok, to each their own. Another good Panic! song is "There's A Good Reason Why These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought Of It Yet". Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol is nice. (I stopped listening to the radio stations that plays it like every other song, so I still like it )

Unde the iron sea is little more darker than Hopes and Fears. It's a good CD with hits such as Crystal ball, Is it any wonder, Put it behind you. Hopes and Fears was the happy Keane so to speak. But Under the Iron sea is much more darker. It's a great CD. It's a must get for a Keane fan

Somebody Told Me is my favorite song by them. Mr. Brightside isn't too bad either.

Sorry for the late reply, but I absolutely adore Samson and Deliah. What makes it so special is how it sounds a bit like a 19th century J.S. Bach, especially the chorus parts. Ma Coeur s'ouvre (aria for Deliah) is absolutely gorgeous.
leftys_rock
We're playing it when we're in Paris in December.
Benchwarmer1
you're going to Paris!?!?!?!
keep in touch
x.doublea
Wonderful! Just listened to Maria Callas sing Ma Coeur s'ouvre.... Absolutely soaring....
leftys_rock
We're playing very American music though, except for the Danse Bacchenale. West Side Story, LOTR, Pirates of the Carribean, etc. As we're meeting people from other countries. They'll be probably playing their "native" music as well.
x.doublea
West Side Story should be nice... not sure of LOTR or Pirates of the Carribean though.... have you ever heard 'Across the Stars' from Star Wars? It's actually pretty... not the type which absolutely grips your heart, but the type that can make you sit down and listen.
leftys_rock
We're also playing a concerto by Barber and Midsummer's Night's Dream by Mendholsson.
Benchwarmer1
what do you play leftys?
leftys_rock
Cello.
Benchwarmer1
Nice, i play the saxophone
x.doublea
When I was young, I always wanted to play the cello, but it was not to be. I play the violin, piano, clarinet, bass clarinet, and tenor saxapohone, as well as singing. Now, you're going to wonder, where do I find the time to practice? Well, that's the problem.
Benchwarmer1
hey, we can have a duet, i play alto saxophone
x.doublea
Definitely, that would be nice . Well, in terms of my 'favourite' rankings, this is how it would probably work out:
Saxaphone's down there mainly because it's not a classical instrument. I guess I'm reasonable at it, mainly because of my clarinet. Clarinet demands so much more air support and support from your body. Makes saxaphone easier (well, the tenor, at least). Saxphone definitely works for jazz, though.
I love the violin the most in terms of instruments simply because it's the most 'voice' like. You can almost sing on the violin, or any other string instrument.
x.doublea
Benchwarmer, what type of music do you play on your saxaphone? Jazz?
Benchwarmer1
most of the time...
just haven't played in a while

The piano is of course the best instrument, both melody and accompaiment. I play violin also, and I do know a little about the trumpet and the (French) Horn. Two intruments that I used to take.

I like Saint-Saens a lot too. But, the French composers are not as inviting as the Italians: Puccini, Verdi, Bellini, Donizetti, etc. I find, Italian music is a bit more emotional, while French music is more refined.

I am a fan of Russian composers, Tchaikovsky, Rachiminoff (sp), ect.
I like Stravinsky alot too, I couldn't stand him not to long ago. That has changed though.
x.doublea
Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff are absolutely stunning! Mussorgsky is also great, due to Boris Godunov. Stravinsky, well, I'm not a big fan of him... so dissonant! At least his music is driven though. Like, I can't stand stuff like Debussy....

I adore Isle of the Dead, it is fun, it's hard to find good, dark classical music.
I don't like Mussorgsky. Stravinsky use of dissonance is what used to drive me away from his music, but after playing music from the Firebird I started to like him more.

Yes, that's what usually happens. You grow tolerance for one's works. Like, I'm trying to force myself to understand Wagner... some segments of his are absolutely soaring, but a lot of it isn't really special. And Isle of the Dead... well, it's Rachmaninoff!

Wagner's ok, I haven't listened to a whole lot of his music though.
yes, Rachmaninoff use of Dies Arie (I think is the name of it) is very unique. other composers used it, but never as many times as he did.

About Wagner, his lyrical parts are, regrettably, quite extraordinary. Unfortunately, he seemed to loath lyricism.
I love Rachmaninoff... mainly because of the emotion, expression, lyricism, and power.

really? I guess that is why I like them. lol
Mozart gets on my nerves some, you always hear how "joy is the center of all his works", are you kidding me? was he always happy or something? his Seseme Street type of happiness annoys me some, I do like him though, after blasting him strange, I know. Most classical people are the same, I really like Haydn though (his Trumpet Concerto is my favorite).
x.doublea
Well, Mozart was driven more by the lyric line, whereas Haydn was more driven by the orchestration. Beethoven is somewhere in the middle, and the most emotional. Mozart was a very 'happy' person. Like, take his operas. Don Giovanni, Le Nozze de Figaro, and Cosi fan tutte are all meant to make people laugh. He was very lavish and always partying (to put it in coarse terms), and I think it shows in his music.
PSALT
I have heard a lot of Liszt's Dante Symphony, I am interested in it. Anybody here listened to it, reviews, thoughts?

No, I haven't. I'm planning to start looking into symphonies sometime in the future, but opera will always be the closest to my heart....
