Very good win for Serena, the little blip could only have done her good. Hopefully she can go further through this draw and not loose to anyone she shouldn't. I want Molik to do well. She won this in 2003, and also the doubles with Clijsters in 2000, and is obviously a crowd favourite. Good to see her through in singles and doubles.

time for my regular emotional display over another gut-wrenching Kirilenko loss:

I'm surprised Serena can go the distance like that, considering she hasn't been really playing that often recently....

That was such an intense match, it'll be huge for Serena I think.

Safarova was up 5-3 in the tiebreak, then serena brought it to 5-all. Then Lucie double-faulted!
And serena won the next point to take it.

I don't know how huge that is for Serena. Of course she pulled it out, she is a great champion who is known for her toughness in tight situations. Her experience obviously would help her win a match like that. I do think this is a good win for her, but to make it that close is not good. The rest of the tournament will be a big test to see how she will hold up at the Australian.

that was such a nerve racking match. Im glad she was able to pull it out Very Happy

Molik eyes Williams showdown
January, AAP - Alicia Molik says a finals showdown in Hobart with former world No.1 Serena Williams would present the perfect lead-up to the Australian Open.

The field of 32 at the tier four, $US170,000 ($A217,155) Tennis International includes 15 of the world's top 50 players, with wildcard Molik (pictured) ranked 165 and unseeded Williams 95.

Molik and Williams have met only twice before, and both times Williams has triumphed.

But Molik believes the chance to play the seven-times grand slam winner again would bring out her best, should both win through to the Friday night final.

"I'd love to play her," Molik said.

"Playing against the best players is how you gauge yourself, so the higher ranked player you play, the better."

"I always raise my level when I play the better girls."

Both players are trying to re-establish themselves in world tennis after major injuries.

Molik suffered an inner-ear problem which affected her balance and kept her off the circuit throughout 2006, while Williams suffered with her ankle and knee.

"The only chance of us playing each other is in the final," Molik said.

"If I got to that stage I wouldn't care who I played - a final's a final.

"The fact that she's here in Hobart, one of the smaller events on the Tour calendar, means she is really preparing herself for the summer and taking it extremely seriously."

Molik has started the year well, winning two of her three matches at the Hopman Cup in Perth last week, including a victory over world No.6 Nadia Petrova of Russia.

"I've been working on my aggressive game," she said.

"You could see in Perth I was going for it.

"Beating Nadia last week ... that was my first match of the year, so I'm pretty happy with that.

"I couldn't really ask much more of myself leading into this event."

Molik said the Hobart event would be beneficial in more ways that one leading in to Melbourne.

"I love rebound ace courts, it's where my serve really kicks and works, especially with the heat in Melbourne," she said.

"I'm hoping it warms up here as well because it suits my bigger game, my attacking, aggressive game style."

Molik's expectations for 2007 will start humble.

"I haven't set too many goals, but I'd like to get at least a couple of matches here in Hobart," she said.

"It's always great to play in the finals, but its been a long time since I've seen one."

im really dissapointed in Serena. She was winning easily and was up double break point at 5-5 in the second set to serve for the match.

I am not going to call this a choke. Serena have never let this happen in the past.

Anna Chakvetadze won the Hobart International, beating qualifier Vasilisa Bardina 6-3 7-6. She is the 14th different champion at Hobart since it started in 1994. No player has ever won a second title. This is Chakvetadze's 3rd title (Guangzhou and Moscow 2006), and 3rd in her last 4 events. It was a good run for Bardina aswell who was appearing in her first final.

In the doubles, Elena Likhovtseva and Elena Vesnina completed a Russian sweep. They upset top seeds Anabel Medina-Garrigues and Virginia Ruano-Pascual 2-6 6-1 6-2. This is Likhovtseva's 27th doubles title and 3rd in Hobart. She now owns the most doubles titles in Gold Coast and Hobart (3 at each event), which is quite an achievement! It was Vesnina's 2nd doubles title.

Anna is a firey and tricky lefty. She has game. But can her mental game is/can be poor
