Too bad... if she only had a stronger mental game. That's what really separates the leaders from the chasers....

The thing is, she only seems to fight even after a tight set against Sharapova, and yes, she has reason to, but just fighting hard against one top player isn't going to do it. And she CAN fight, it's just a lot of times she doesn't seem to have the will to.

That's interesting... if she can have that kind of fight against anyone, who knows, she might be a top tenner....

Sometimes Li has those UFE busts though. And considering Elena's 3 set prowess, i'm a little surprised by the loss.

Huge win for Li, Im surprised by it.
I was also live-scoring that one, Li dug out of a 5-2 hole.

Elena should have never allowed herself to get into this situation with Na Li. Hopefully this will be a wake-up call for the AO, because I really want Elena to do well.

She just hasn't fully matured yet mentally on the tennis court. There are those like Sharapova who are born mentally tough (or maybe raised mentally tough) and mature on the court very early. Golovin is not like that, but she can fight when she's in her "zone" like in Miami. The fact that she can sometimes means that she has the inner ability, it just may take time for it to truly show itself.

I expected a lack of effort, after the double win. It would have been better to withdraw just like X Malise did.

wow, sketchy match, good win Kim!! Very Happy
PSALT

Kim was so bad at times. Look at this stat, through the first two sets she had 3 winners to 4 double faults. If it wasn't for the fact that Li was spraying horrible errors at bad times Li would have won. Kim's serve was really bad today. I shudder to think what someone like Sharapova or Dementieva will do to it if she doesn't clean it up.

Oh my Laughing . Anyways, I think badminton really throws off one's overhead timing... the birdie drops so slowly, and in tennis, the ball practically accelerates as it drops down towards one's head....

Yeah, it's quite different, but in practice, I hit overheads all the time, never miss or shank them. I think it's just the pressure of the match and such.

Laughing But WOW, Jelena Jankovic is on a ROLLLLLLLLLLLL! Shocked Real test comes against Kim tomorrow though. I really think she's going to get burned out for AO though. She's fit, so she should get through a couple rounds, but when she comes against tougher opponents, it's gonna be an issue.

I don't like Jelena attitude, but I find her game very refreshing. She is the shotmaker of her generation. She can play well from anywhere on the court. She can crack winners from the baseline every so often, but she also gets up to net and make her matches interesting. She also a fluid mover, she isn't the fastest person on court, but she is very graceful.

Tougher meaning, can chase more balls down, can keep up with her, get lots of balls back, kind of like how she plays. Because if she gets more grinding matches, she's not going to survive for much longer.

Clijsters won 4-6 7-6 6-4. It was such a good match. Jankovic really put all her energy to try and win it in straights. She won the first set, was up a break in the second, served for it at 5-4, had a match point, was broken, broke back, served for it at 6-5, was broken, then served 2 doubles in the tiebreak to all but hand the set to Kim. She then was quickly down 0-4 in the third, but really fought to get to 5-4, before Kim closed it out.

The crowd infuriated me. Evil or Very Mad It truly was the worst crowd I have seen in a long time. Fans for both players would cheer for errors, doubles, between first and second serves (early in the match shouting YEAH! after a Kim fault), in the middle of points (multiple times someone from the crowd would scream OUT! during points). It reminded me a lot of Agassi at the USO, but a smaller crowd, and the fact that they had no respect to speak of for the opposing player. I truly detested that crowd.

The chair and linespeople were horrid as well. Kim just got bad calls through the match, Jankovic's bad calls came in huge spurts. The chair was overruling Jankovic like crazy in the first set (over ruling an in call on a serve twice in one game is only one example). Then in the late second and early third Jankovic began having trouble with one lineperson in particular. He kept ruling in favor of Kim, one instance (I think 3-0 or 2-0 in the third) making a really, really bad call. He called a Kim groundy in when the replay (TTC's, the event didn't have it) showed it was far long.

In short, the match itself was very entertaining. The crowd and judges however put damper on it though.
pacomexican

yeah Clijsters Won!
PSALT

I still don't like Jankovic's attitude (I got a little annoyed seeing her snap at the ballboys all the time), but I don't see how Dave, or anyone else for tha matter, could not like watching her play. She is great to watch. She was coming up with some amazing groundies in the first (as she has been doing since the USO Series). She was also matching, and at some points surpassing, Clijsters at net. It was also quite fun to see her get back 90% of Clijsters swinging volleys and overheads.
pacomexican

I hate Jelenas attitude on court, i never realized how annoying she was until that match in the summer where she played Serena.

I really started to dislike Jankovic after that doubles match at Wimbledon against Navratilova. She was just so disrespectful to everyone. I didn't like her game either, she seemed completely one-dimensional and stuck on the baseline for the whole time.
Not_Even_Amateur

In that case so is Kim. And how about Davenport, dave, your favourite? She is hardly the most diverse of players, huh?

I don't really like Jankovic, I mentioned on this board I think when she beat Kuzy in the USO?! My memory might be failing me but I believe that is when I started disliking the girl. Now she has beaten Momo, so...hmm, not in my good books. But even so she is very entertaining; she is rude and has most of the qualities I dislike in a player but, unlike Henin, she is also lively and fun and generally says what she thinks etc. so she certainly is entertaining; a good character for the sport.

I saw her push a ballboy out of the way the other day though as though he was a piece of muck, didn't like that too much Rolling Eyes

I'm talking about Jankovic being content to stay on the baseline during a doubles match- on grass! She showed nothing at all and just hit from the back. Davenport has alot more variety on both singles and doubles courts. You see alot of skills especially when she plays doubles.
dav6789

This is a great win for Clijsters and should definetely have her confidence at the highest level. She retains the title she won in 2003. Jankovic was red-hot and in the lead in this final. From some pictures I saw of the final, Clijsters looked happier than I have ever seen her to win this title. I hope she reconsiders her decision to retire because she could have a good run this year if she doesn't get injured. I am finding it hard to find favourites but I wouldn't mind seeing her with the Daphne Atkhurst Memorial Cup in 2 weeks time!

In the doubles, Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Meghann Shaughnessy had a great win over Marion Bartoli and Meilen Tu 6-3 3-6 7-6. This title is really good for the both of them. Groenefeld looks a bit overweight right now and Shaughnessy can be inconsistent so to start the year with this title is great. This is their 3rd title together.

You can't judge a player's whole game on one doubles match. In singles I would take the view that Jankovic is more "dimensioned" than Davenport.

I agree for the most part. Jankovic mixes it up more often. In the first two sets against Clijsters she was getting to net often. She is very good about finishing points up there. I would say Davenport is the better volleyer though.

Yes, Jankovic's volleys are solid, but not a weapon like for Mauresmo for example.

Is it true to say that many of the women actually have good volleys, but that they don't know how to approach the net, and, therefore, can't be effective most of the time up there?
