Kooyong Exhibition TournamentThe Kooyong Classic began with a major upset: Tommy Haas defeated Roger Federer 3/6 6/4 6/4. This means that the best Federer can do at the exhibition tournament is fifth place (consolation champion). The second match featured a Roddick thrashing of Monfils 6/2 6/2. The next matches to played on Day I will be Ivan Ljubicic vs Guillermo Coria and
David Nalbandian vs Nicolas Kiefer.

really?? WOW!! fed LOST?? ALREADY?? in JANUARY??
x.doublea
I guess his timing was a bit off. He hit 15 winners and 39 unforced errors. Fortunately for him, this doesn't count on his record. This comes even more of a surprise, since Federer beat Haas 6/3 6/3 last week.

Wow, I didnīt see that one coming (Haas defeating Federer)!!!

i told you federer is alittle off
oh and roddick thrasing monfils. darn i thought monfils could put a better fight

I'm sure federer will be "on" again for the AO. It is only an exhibition.
beachjm

It's a surprise but not a huge deal (being an exhibition). Federer will bounce back at the AO. I always thought Haas was an extremely talented player but injuries, bad luck, and not being the toughest cat around mentally has always hurt him. He once was #2 in the world and a good bet to win a major but he got some bad breaks starting in '02.

Haas and Federer have now played 3 times in Australia, and Haas has won every match.

In other Day 1 action, Guillermo Coria surprisingly defeated Ivan Ljubicic 6/2 6/2 and Nicholas Kiefer defeated David Nalbandian 6/3 3/2 ret..

wow alot of upsets. coria over ivan. that's defentily revenge for the shanghai beating

This is the schedual for Day 2:
Tommy Haas vs Guillermo Coria (Semifinal)
Roger Federer vs Ivan Ljubicic (Consolation Semifinal)
Max Mirnyi vs Gael Monfils (Consolation Semifinal)
(Mirnyi replacement for David Nalbandian)
There will also be a non-count match between Tim Henman and Mikhail Youzhny.
x.doublea
Tommy Haas defeated Guillermo Coria 6/4 6/4 in the semifinals. Haas will await the winner of the Roddick-Kiefer match (Day 3) in the finals, as Coria will await the loser of that match in the 3rd place playoff.
Federer defeated Ljubicic in the consolation finals 6/4 6/3. Federer will now meet Mirnyi, a 6/2 7/5 against Monfils in the othe consolation final, in the 5th place playoff. Ljubicic will meet Monfils in the 7th place playoff.
The outcome of the Henman-Youzhny match will not effect the tournament draw whatsoever.

kiefers having a good run....it will be a nice start to the season if roddick wins....

So here is the playoff draws:
Finals: Tommy Haas vs. Andy Roddick or Nicolas Kiefer
3rd Place Playoff: Guillermo Coria vs. Andy Roddick or Nicolas Kiefer
5th Place Playoff: Roger Federer vs. Max Mirnyi
7th Place Playoff: Ivan Ljubicic vs. Gael Monfils
I guess I should have posted this topic in the tournament section...
leftys_rock

oh well...we can read it here anyway.....who do u think is going to win roddick vs. kiefer match and in how many sets??
x.doublea

Probably Roddick in straight sets; but nethertheless, Kiefer is definitely capable of producting an upset.

yup....cuz kiefer is one of the few ppl who can take a set off of fed....JHH beat kunetzova 6-3, 6-1....shes at the final....shes either facing schiavone or vaidisova....whoever picked JHH was smart....well it was helped by clijsters pulling out...

Too bad, I was thinking of putting Henin-Hardenne as my pick but chose Kim Clijsters instead because I thought Henin-Hardenne would be rusty.

keifer is haveing a good run. i can see he him squeez past roddick.

The field in that exhibition tourney is pretty amazing-Federer, Roddick, Ljubicic, Coria, Haas, Monfils, Nalbandian, Kiefer. It will be interesting to see if Roddick can win it and get some confidence heading into next week. I wonder how he'll do at the AO. He could go either very far or drop out early, although I don't see him losing in the 1st rd again any time soon.
J-man
roddick since the USopen has been un-predictable. he can do anything at AO expect win it
leftys_rock
duh....but he might have a good draw.....so he could potentially make it to the final if hewitt or nalbandian is having a bad day....but then fed is in his way........so his chances for winning are almost zip....
x.doublea
Roddick is in the finals of the Kooyong tournament, as Kiefer retired of an injury leading 1/0. Yet another loss for the Australian Open....
J-man
well with a good draw he could very well make it to the semi's like last year. but federer wil crush him. by the way what has nalbdian been up to??
leftys_rock
theres some draws now....ljubicic is in roddicks side of the draw plus nalbandian.....

Federer squeezed by Mirnyi 6/7(1) 6/4 7/6(1) to secure a fifth place finishing at the exhibition tournament.

Yes, definitely a great start for Henin-Hardenne. Hopefully, she can carry this momentum into the Australian Open.

that match took over three hours...but it was a good prep for her....good that she prevailed in that one...but she lost serve a lot in that game....probably just a bad serving day...

Coria defeated Mirnyi 6/1 7/6(6) in the 3rd place playoff. Coria finishes third in the tournament and Mirnyi finishes both 4th and 6th (due to his loss to Federer in the 5th place playoff; he replaced Kiefer in the 3rd place playoff). Well, at least I think so....
leftys_rock
so the roddick vs. haas final is gonna be played tomorrow...im gonna probably say roddick in 2 tight sets....

I say Haas in three.

No, it is being played in like an hour or so.

i say roddick in three sets. hass seems to be playing well right now. this could be a comeback year for him
leftys_rock
true...im gonna go see if the game started....its either in 2 REALLY tight sets or 3 kinda tight sets...to roddick...but yes haas is playing really good now...
x.doublea
All of the Roddick-Haas matches seem to be tight.
leftys_rock
well basically any roddick vs. anybody who is having a hot run is a really tight match....wouldnt u agree??
x.doublea
I agree. Roddick seems to have trouble playing people on a hot streak (well, I guess all the top 10 have such problems).
x.doublea
Not as close as I thought it would be...Roddick just defeated Tommy Haas 6/3 7/6(6) to win the Kooyong tournament. Well, both players walk out winners: Roddick won the tournament, and Hass beat Federer.

leftys_rock
yes the second set must have been nice to watch....well fed doesnt have as much of a problem with players on a hot streak......roddick does....its just he doesnt really have a plan B in games.....
dav6789
I hope Roddick can take this form into the A.Open. Last year, he played well in Kooyong ( Final) and did well in Melbourne.
leftys_rock
yes i hope so too....he probably wants to show the world that he can get somewhere after that first round bust at the USO last year...
dav6789
Yeah, that was a horrible suprise.
leftys_rock
yeah on his favorite surface too....but muller was having a nice day....huge upset...he should do better at the AO...
dav6789
Muller had 2 good wins in 2 slams (wimby : nadal, us open : roddick)
, but then lost afterwards.
Roddick faces Swiss qualifier michael lammer in the first round, and could face wesley moodie or oscar hernandez. He should be able to beat all of these players.
leftys_rock
yeah muller just has a good day and beats top players, but then loses in the next round really badly...
J-man
yeah he's kind of like an on and off player
leftys_rock
yeah a lot of 30-100 ranked players are like that.....
J-man
so players like that won't really get far in GS
x.doublea
Yes, they are definitely not consistant enough.
dav6789
They dont get far in the slams, but they can beat top players in early rounds. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, the person that beat Carlos Moya in Melbourne last year, lost after that win.The players that will be top players can back up good wins.
leftys_rock
does that happen more in the mens?? cuz in womens, there are upsets, but not as clear cut...
J-man
yeah i think so.
leftys_rock
the womens field in general is more closer and open than the mens game most definately......in a way it makes it good to watch....
J-man
it's because in the men's game there is more tion, then in the women's game. but even with the tion factor men's tennis is still intresting
leftys_rock
yeah cuz for women, there have been 7 different winners in the past 7 GS...and for men, fed is for most of them...
J-man
yeah. so there's alot more favorites in matches for the women then in men
leftys_rock
for men its fed, nadal....for women, its davenport, clijsters, mauresmo(if she doesnt choke), sharapova, pierce(if she picks it up), JHH, s. williams, and v. williams........big difference.....
J-man
yes very
leftys_rock
lol...so for fantasy tennis, the womens side will be more interesting....
J-man
yeah. but i'll take a men's tennis match anyday over a womens
