Kim Clijsters Hopes to Return Soon
BRUSSELS, Belgium - Kim Clijsters is hopeful of returning to play earlier than expected after doctors told her an ankle injury she suffered at the
Australian Open last month was not as serious as previously thought.
"I just got back from the doctor with good news," Clijsters said on her Web site Tuesday. "If everything continues as is, there is a greater chance that I will play in Antwerp (starting Feb. 13)."
Clijsters said the muscle rupture was not as deep as previously diagnosed and was healing quickly. Only last month, the world's top-ranked player said she could be out of action for seven weeks due to the injury.
"The injury is healing well," Clijsters said. "The chances of me playing at the Diamond Games have certainly risen."
The prospect of Clijsters holding onto the top spot will increase if she returns to play at the Antwerp tournament. France's Amelie Mauresmo, ranked second, will also play there, as will defending champion Venus Williams.
Clijsters said last week she will offer every fan at her Diamond Games home tournament this month a bottle of Champagne to celebrate reaching No. 1.

Just for the record, Venus Williams is not the defending champion at Antwerp. She lost to Mauresmo in the finals.

I guess AP made a mistake then.

ewwww. well at least it's not the offical WTA site that made the mistake

We shouldn't be so sure, since we've already spotted a few ATP-website mistakes.

yes we have it's a shame.

Last year in Antwerp, Clijsters made her comeback, reaching the QF before losing to Venus. She likes playing at the Diamond Games. She said that will be her last tournament in 2007.

I REALLY do not want to think of Cljister's retiring! What a disaster!

Yeah, it is very bad for the game. She should and will hopefully reconsider her decision.
J-man
yeah i also don't like her retiring. but she seems like she really wnats to retire.

I have never heard of a player planning retire in advance. She should be retiring when she can't handle it anymore.
J-man
yeah it is kind of werild to have a player say when there going to retire
x.doublea

If she does what she says, she will be retiring in approximately one year. This is a scary thought.
J-man
yes it is. almost to good to be true. one most think what is going between her ears

Great to hear that Clijsters won't be out for 2 months. I'd play it very careful, if I was her. I hope she can stick around in the game for more than 2 yrs. She still could win many more majors. She just has to stay healthy.
x.doublea

Yes, she can definitely win more majors. I just hope she doesn't retire in 2007.
J-man
no one wants her to retire in 2007

It's too bad about Kim's retirement plan. As much as I hate to say this, but that is why JHH has been better and probably will end up being better in the end. Clijsters just lacks that great determination. You would have thought that after her huge comeback from over 100 to #1, she would have re-thought her 2007 retirement. Oh well...all we can do is hope.

Yes. Henin-Hardenne has great determination to be number 1 for years to come, while Clijsters seems to just want to enjoy life.
J-man

JHH has tennis on her mind more than cljters. but i think mauresmo out of both JHH and clijters has tennis on her mind the most
x.doublea
Perhaps, but Henin-Hardenne is one of the most determined players on tour.
J-man
yes she is very determined. but i don't think she is determined enough if she didn't keep going in the AO final
x.doublea
I think she isn't too determined to fight through pain, but rather to be Number 1.
J-man
no pain no gain

Yah, I don't really know how determined JHH is anymore. That performance in the AO final was pathetic. She should have sucked it up and not run away like a baby.
Clijsters has just as much talent, she just has to put it all together and some how stay healthy. If I was her, who cares about being #1. It really is not that big of a deal in the long run. Look at all the people who've been #1 but have just won 1 major or none. She should just focus on winning the big one's (majors) and play a more condensed schedule. All those tournaments plus doubles really took a toll on her body. She has to be much smarter scheduling wise.

not gonna be much of a long run for clijters (retiring 2007)

I think we've all killed this comment but the entire world hopes that she continues playing until she can't play anymore.

i think its because of the injury thing that she doesnt want to continue after 07.....like she had three injuries, so she probably feels pretty bad hurting in three places.....i really hope that she can play past 07.....i love watching her play and shes a nice person too.....

I'm not so sure this is the best idea. With all of the acrobatics she tends to do on the court, I can see her injuring herself again in a freak split accident where her ankle bends too far. She's taking a risk here, and if she hurts herself again she may not be able to play for a longer period of time.
leftys_rock

yeah....i think she should also pick her tournaments wisely as her method of playing tennis is harder on the body.....

I'd watch out, especially since she didn't do anything too drastic to get that injury, she was just playing pretty normally. Who knows, though. Maybe she'll become a safer player and the commentators will stop doing Klijster's split counts.

leftys_rock

i would be a little sad if kim stopped doing her splits....theyre signature of kim.....

I love seeing Kim doing her splits. I know when she does them there is increased injury , but they are so cool to look at.

They really do work for her game, too. They help her get to balls that she might normally not be able to hit, she's actually pretty short compared to the rest of the top players.
Jaded
And she must be very flexible.
leftys_rock
yes....but unfortunately, they cause more injuries than we would have liked to see.....
J-man

she won't stop doing them no matter the injuries. she's so used to doing them anyhow is proably a natural recation. but i would advise her to do them less often

I agree they are probably a natural reaction for her, and when going for a shot that she feels needs a split she just will do it.
leftys_rock
yeah, shes done them for quite a long time, so i dont think shes going to be stopping them anytime soon....
x.doublea
The amazing part about it is that she has done the splits and hit topspin winners along with it.
leftys_rock
yeah, if i tried that, i probably wouldnt be able to hit the ball over the net.....kim just has technique with these....
Kay-Kay
I'm quite flexible enough to do a split, but to hit a topspin winner with it I don't think so. My fancy shot is the between the legs shot which usually ends up losing the point anyway because my opponent has an easy volley after my tweeny shot.
leftys_rock
haha.....i like running back and hitting an angled shot backwards....its just kind of hard to aim unless you have a lot of time........
Kay-Kay
Yeah that is why my between the leg shot usually goes right to the middle of the court and my opponet can put it away with a clean volley on the next shot.
leftys_rock
and if im quick enough i love hitting around the net post....except that shot has to be perfect to do it.....
Kay-Kay
That is an incredibly hard shot to pull off.
Kay-Kay
Most of the time I see this shot attempted it practical takes the ball boys head off.
leftys_rock
yup....i guess thats why they kneel behind the net post....
