Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili withstood 13 aces from two-time champion Jan Michael Gambill to win his Main Draw Elimination match and advance to the round-robin stage of the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships on Sunday. Gabashvili put just 45 per cent of first serves into play but countered by saving five of six break points faced.
Gabashvili, No. 113 in the ATP Rankings, collected his first win of the 2007 season, having fallen in the first round of Chennai in his only other appearance this year.
Former World No. 14 Gambill, who has slipped to No. 687 and needed a wild card into the main draw, won the Delray Beach title in 2001 and 2003. He played just one ATP-level tournament last year, winning one match at Washington D.C.
Romanian Andrei Pavel (pictured) breezed into the round-robin stage after benefiting from a mid-match retirement by Serbian Ilia Bozoljac. Pavel, who yesterday celebrated his 33rd birthday, was leading 6-3, 1-0 when Bozoljac retired with gastroenteritis. Pavel, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 13 in 2004 but now languishes at No. 111, improved to 264-240 in lifetime ATP matches.
University of Florida freshman Jesse Levine played the role of hometown hero when he qualified for the Main Draw Elimination after defeating Swiss Michael Lammer 7-5, 6-0.

More Updates:
Defending champion Tommy Haas improved his perfect career record in Delray Beach to 7-0 after defeating American teen Sam Querrey 6-4, 7-5 Thursday to reach the quarterfinal stage.
Haas, a recent Australian Open semifinalist, saved both break points he faced while breaking the big-serving Querrey once in each set. The German, who this week returned to the ATP Rankings Top 10 for the first time in more than four years, next meets another American, eighth seed Vince Spadea.
Last year Haas broke Spadea four times in the Delray Beach semifinals en route to a 6-3, 6-2 win. He went on to win the title and the next event he played: Memphis.
Spadea advanced to his second quarterfinal of the year (Adelaide) after defeating fellow American Ryan Sweeting 7-5, 6-4 to emerge from his round-robin group with a 2-0 record. Spadea won despite serving at just 45 per cent. The 32 year old is chasing his fourth consecutive semifinal appearance in Delray Beach. His best result was a runner-up finish in 2004 (l. R. Mello).
The Boca Raton resident is attempting to revive his career after finishing outside the ATP Rankings Top 70 for the second consecutive year last year. He won just 19 matches, failing to reach 20 match wins in a season for the first time in four years.
Italian veteran Davide Sanguinetti, the 35-year-old 2002 tournament champion, advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over American Amer Delic.
Fourth seed Benjamin Becker stopped the impressive run of University of Florida freshman Jesse Levine, conceding just four points on his first serve in a 6-3, 6-3 win in just 56 minutes. The German did not drop serve.

Wow, Benjamin Becker is up at fourth seed... impressive for someone who was ranked under the 100s prior to the Agassi match....

Xavier Malisse, the 2005 Champion has gone through to the final over Vincent Spadea. Spadea was in his 4th semi-final in a row at this event.
Britain's James Auckland and former Wimbledon Champion Stephen Huss went through to the final aswell, beating Auckland Champions Coetzee/Wassen in straight sets.

Xavier Malisse is in the singles and doubles final for the second time this year (he won both titles in Chennai). If he were to win both matches today aswell, he would have 4 titles and could sit out for the rest of the year and still say it was one of his best!
Right now, Blake leads by a set in the singles final. For the doubles, I am rooting for James Auckland!

The final will resume on Monday at 10am! I don't know who will be going to watch at that time on a Monday morning! The doubles final will follow after that.

Yes, but I guess that's the only time they can resume play. The players might have to get to another tournament, afterall.

I know they have to play it on Monday, but they could have it during the evening, or at least late afternoon. Anyway, they have the next few days off for Davis Cup, don't they?

Oh, yes, they do... totally forgot about that. But, I think it's standard practice to do it this way.
PSALT
Malisse took the title 5-7 6-4 6-4. He did get rather lucky. The momentum was swinging Blake's way in that second set before the rain delay.

To bad about the rain. Proabaly ruined Blake's momentum. Could this be the year that Malisse turns it all around?
