grand slam changeswhat changes would like seen to GS?? for example more night matches
Speedy-Gonzalez
I would like to see the French start having some night matches in the Future. I would also like Wimbledon to drop the all white clothing thing.
J-man
i agree and disagree with you.
i would like more night matches at FO.
but i think they need to keep the white clothing at wimbledon.
Speedy-Gonzalez
Then I guess Serena & Venus should start working on an all white outfit for themselves.

yes, i like the white clothing...its still part of wimby...

Here's what I think should happen:
Australian Open
Push the date back by a few weeks, in order to allow players to recover from the previous season and for the tournament to have a full lineup.
Roland Garros
Add lights to the centre court stadium in order to play night matches. The tournament's addition of an extra day is a good idea.
Wimbledon
Make the grass what it used to be. Adding the sand makes the courts play more like a hard court, and it wrecks to 'traditionalism' of Wimbledon. Other than that, Wimbledon is running smoothly.
US Open
Plan Arthur Ashe Stadium and/or Louis Armstrong Stadium to have a retractable roof ready for around 2010. Right now, the rain delays are a joke, especially since they wipe the court with clothes, and the court wiping pushes schedualing back even more. If not retractable roofs, why not just tarps to cover the courts?

I definetely agree about Wimbledon, what is the point of having grass courts if they play like hard courts??? Also at the A.Open, they should change their heat policy to all matches cancelled, not just the matches that arent on,and they should do something about rebound ace.
I agree, the French Open would be great at night !

I agree with you about the heat policy. However, I think Rebound Ace is fine; it surely produces great tennis.
dav6789
It produces great tennis, but alot of ankle injuries.
x.doublea
Yes, but if you notice, usually, the best movers don't get injured through court-related issues on Rebound Ace.
dav6789
They do hurt their ankles when suddenley changing direction
x.doublea
I don't think they could do anything about it without changing the surface entirely, though.

Yes, I have said it before: Wimbledon management makes the US Open management look novice.

yup, i love those ground crews at wimby....very professional....but yes, i agree with all the changes that should happen....and also, i think the gap between wimby and FO is too small...

I agree with you on all points. The US Open really needs to get a better policy for drying courts.
Kay-Kay

They need to take the sand out of the courts at Wimbledon.
leftys_rock

i also think that RG really needs some lights....i would love to see night matches there......
Kay-Kay
That would be so cool. Lights at Roland Garros.
leftys_rock
yeah, slipping and sliding across the clay at RG under the lights.... ...what a thought....
Kay-Kay
Matches at Roland Garros at night. I wonder what time they would broadcast in North Dakota.
leftys_rock
thats actually a good time for us....i can never watch europe matches in the morning....
Kay-Kay
I homeschooled so if I get my school work done I can have fun watching tennis all day if I want.
leftys_rock

lucky u....im on break, so i can be on all day...

Kay-Kay

Yeah, my mum wanted to homeschool me because of the differences between Norway and the USA when we came here when I was 6 and going into the 1st grade. We have continued to homeschool ever since.
Kay-Kay
We better get back to the topic and stop talking about Homeschooling,
leftys_rock
oh yes thats a good point....ok....any other GS changes??

It might be fairer at the AO if they use the roofs on Rod Laver Arena and Vodafone Arena only to stop rain from drizzling onto the court, because it's quite unfair that the top players might be able to play indoors while the others have to play in 39 degree celcius temperature.
leftys_rock
yeah, oh and by the way, does anybody know when the roof over the center courts at wimbledon will be finished??

| leftys_rock wrote: | | yeah, oh and by the way, does anybody know when the roof over the center courts at wimbledon will be finished?? |
Somewhere around 2009. Also, they're going to expand the capacity from 13.800 to 15.000 seats.
leftys_rock
the seat editions sound good.....but is the construction going to go on DURING the actual tournament?? so 3 more years before a retractable roof......
Babzzzzz
They will start removing the roof as of July 2006 (after the championships). During the Championships in 2007 there will be no roof. In July 2008 it will be completed and in 2009 all the renovations will be finished. http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/about/guide/longtermplan.html
leftys_rock
hmm, everybodys going to have to bring their umbrellas when they remove the roof entirely... thanx for the link....
x.doublea

That's good, although I would think that a roof wouldn't take that long to build....

what about roland garros?? have they any plans to bulid a roof on their stdiums????

not as far as I know, and wouldn't a roof speed up the court?

A roof on Roland Garros would be pointless. They hardly have any rain, and usually the play can continue in rain. Also, you are right , a roof would speed the court up.
I'm 4 Tati
Yes, a roof would be pointless. You do not want to speed up the red clay that is what makes Roland Garros so great.
dav6789
Yeah, slowing down Wimbledon is bad enough !
I'm 4 Tati
Yeah, that is also pointless. What are they trying to make all the court surface move like hard surfaces.
dav6789
It is stupid...all grass courts should be ultra-fast, clay courts ultra-slow, and have a variety of hard courts (slow rebound ace, fast US hardcourts)
I'm 4 Tati
Exactly, that is what makes the slams so unique they are all different in the way they play.
x.doublea
Yes, Wimbledon talks about 'tradition', but they don't even keep the 'tradition' and heritage of grass court tennis.
leftys_rock
yeah, and since wimbledon keeps everything else, why dont they keep the grass the way it is?? and yes, a roof over RG is really pointless....it hardly ever rains over there....
PSALT
even if it does rain at RG, the clay courts dry themselves don't they?
leftys_rock
yeah, the rain doesnt affect the clay very much.....the players just keep playing in the rain...
dav6789
There is no point for a roof there.
Kay-Kay
It would have to be a serious rain storm for them to cancel matches at the French.
leftys_rock
they would just be wasting their money if they needed a roof......and it would also be a nice idea for the USO to have a roof.....the crews arent veyr effective at wiping the court with clothes.....
Kay-Kay
Yeah, that is so ridiculous. They could at least invest in some fan dryers and some sqegees??SP
leftys_rock
the grounds crews at wimbledon are so much more efficient than the ones at the USO.....well it is expected with all that maintinence needed for the grass....
Kay-Kay
Yeah, and the amount of rain they get at Wimby they should be well rehershed in the routine of rain delays.
leftys_rock
yeah, its only been twice ever that there has been NO rain delay at wimby, so yeah, im assuming the grounds crews get A LOT of practice....and they have to paint the lines and cut the grass too....
Kay-Kay
I wish I had a lawn that looked like that at my house.
leftys_rock
yeah, if i could remodel my backyard, i would have it so that theres a grass tennis court in my yard...that would be cool....
Kay-Kay
That would be so cool. The only problem with my backyard is it has a big hill in the back.
leftys_rock
we would have to take out a lot of concrete, our patio roof, 5 bushes, and a lot of pebbles......
Kay-Kay
That would be a big backyard change, but could be worth it. I don't know how your parents would feel though.
leftys_rock
they probably wouldnt be very happy....my dad would rather have a golf course.... ...but back on topic...
x.doublea
A golf course would take a lot of maintenance....more than a tennis court. I think, generally speaking, having a hard court is best for a backyard, because it recquires the least maintenance.
J-man
and less money to keep up.

yes of course....with all 18 holes....grass has to be watered, bugs have to be kept off, grass has to be cut....even more maintinence than a grass court......
