Dealing with Cheating

Today, I was playing a match for my school. I was playing extremely well, and I hit like 10 aces in the first six games to go up 5-1 (it was a proset, so first to eight). Then, I fired two aces within two points, and they were both called out. So I basically screamed at the person, and my game went down. I even threw my racquet at one point. Although I eventually won 8-6, those two instances of cheating threw me off.

Does anyone know of any effective techniques of dealing with such cases (without asking someone to be an umpire, because that's impossible in school matches)?
J-man

call the umpire for hawk eye Laughing no just kidding. i try to block it out and tell myself it was a close call and anyone could have called it in or out. and move on. forget about!!!! if you can teach yourself that then it shouldn't be a problem
x.doublea

I tried, but I just couldn't get it out of my head that the kid called a shots which landed inside the line out simply because I was whipping his ***.

there's two ways you can handle it. one, cheat back. teach him what he is doing and make it VERY clear that you are doing this because he is. Second is to move on and/or don't aim so close to the lines....
Benchwarmer1

That's just unfair, but J-man was right, are u older than this kid?
x.doublea

No, I think he was older than me by a few months, actually. After his cheating, I started playing bad. I had an easy overhead which I hit on the frame and the ball just flew. Then, I spiked my racquet. It's one of the few times I have had an outburst like that.
Benchwarmer1

i had the same problem, only at a much lower level. I was playing doubles with my partner and our opponents were calling every line shot out, i got so angry i almost spiked my racquet, but my partner let actions speak louder than words and he told me to call their line shots out if their cheating progressed
fluffernutter

When I am kicking someones *** and they begin to cheat on some calls it just makes me even madder and I use that engergy to kick their *** even more.
Benchwarmer1

thats some really good logic fluffernutter
fluffernutter

It works for me. And it really gets my opponent even more pissed off where she starts making more unforced errors.
x.doublea

Yes, but I don't really feel comfortable doing what my opponent is doing dishonestly.
fluffernutter

xdoublea I am not saying to go a cheat like your opponent, just channel your anger for good and start hitting more winners. I guarantee this will make your opponent even more increasingly frustrated where they will make more errors. And all I do is walk around the court with a big smile on my face. Very Happy
x.doublea

Unfortunately, though, I'm the type that loses focus and quality of play the angrier I get. I usually don't get angry; I usually keep my calm very nicely. However, when I get angry, I start to rush....
Benchwarmer1

in my thread about the new racquet, my anger played a big part in me buying a much lower powered racquet. i have the same problem as you do, but instead of rushing i try to get more stuff in by hitting it a lot harder and faster, resulting in a lot more shots going long
x.doublea

When I rush, I don't keep points as long as they should be. I start making errors, and I start to play conservatively, which is a big no.
Benchwarmer1

i like to just try to put it away like you and i get careless too
x.doublea

It's sort of an 'Agassi' sickness I have; when things go wrong, I rush instead of taking more time and help my mind regroup. That's something I can work on....
fluffernutter

When I was a little girl learning the game from my older brother and dad that was one of the first things they taught me. Never rush the point wait for the point to set up for the shot to be the easiest for you to hit a winner off of. I guess that is why I am always so laid back on the court and carefree. I figure there could be worse things happening then losing a tennis match.
x.doublea

Yes, I have been tought that too. I do it correctly when things are going correctly. The problem is, when things aren't going correctly, I forget everying I learned. I go for winners when I shouldn't, and I stay conservative when I can go for winners.
fluffernutter

That kinda sucks. Thats when tennis needs to install mentall timeouts where you can just go over for 5 minutes collect your thoughts and then get back to the tennis at hand. Actually some players on the tour do already do that with their bathroom breaks that pop up. Very Happy
x.doublea

Ture. One even uses double-injury time outs do do so. Today, too bad the sprinklers didn't let water fall from the ceiling onto the court. Perhaps that would have help me.... Smile
fluffernutter

So you play your school matches on indoor courts?
x.doublea

This year, around half the season (if you can call it a season) was played indoors, and the other half was played outdoors. Today, I played on an indoor orange carpet court. The championships next week will be played indoors.
fluffernutter

That would be so awesome playing indoors. We play all our matches on hard courts outdoors.
Benchwarmer1

what does carpet play like?
x.doublea

Toronto has a lot of indoor courts because if we didn't, there wouldn't be anywhere to play during the winter season.
fluffernutter

It can be pretty darn cold there in the winter I imagine?

I have never played on carpet, but I imagine it plays pretty fast.
Benchwarmer1

Actually, i was just there in february, x.doublea, ur so lucky i widh it snowed in San Jose, and it is so much colder than the bay area
x.doublea

Yes, Toronto is cold. It can get to -20 degree C.

Carpet is actually slower than I thought. Slices skid, but other than that, the bounce was neutral. I was surprised witht he experience. But my teammates didn't really like it. One of my teammates called it a 'rug court'.
stevos14

Sounds fun. You think -20C is cold, try Walking to school in -34 C in the middle of winter, just a few hours north of toronto. Not fun, you should not be jealous Benchwarmer. Snow sucks, except for snowboarding and cross-country skiing, but otherwise I want to live in Cali!
Benchwarmer1

ok you have convinced me stevos14
x.doublea

The weather is sort of just a hastle to traffic most of the time...
fluffernutter

I agree I'll stick with the beaches of Cali. Although you do have to deal with an earthquake every now and then.
x.doublea

I know this is off topic, but how is it, dealing with earth quakes. What is the feeling?
fluffernutter

Well it is kinda scary. I have never been in a real big one., but things just shake and you make sure you are not under things that are unstable or could easily fall on you and hurt you.
x.doublea

There are small earth quakes in Ontario sometimes. I have relatives that have told me that they have felt rumbling before....
leftys_rock

we constantly have drills in school......because it isnt a "will there be an earthquake?" its "when will there be an earthquake?"......because we are pretty near a fault line....
fluffernutter

I think most places can get them, but you usually only here about the big ones and they are almost always in California. We better get back on topic before we get yelled at. Very Happy

At my school, we're apparently having a lock-up drill- just to make sure we know what to do if a gunman comes into the school. Shocked

Back on topic....

What was this topic again? Lol. Weve had tons of those drills too! What kind of gunman goes into a small town high school!!??
Benchwarmer1

a crazed psychotic one that needs a shrink
x.doublea

Yes, but I think the ministry of education wants all schools to excercise this....

Back on topic....

i leave this fourm for one day and we go from cheaters to earthquakes Laughing Rolling Eyes
Benchwarmer1

so how do you deal with cheaters J-man?
Chelsey

I don't have to deal with that kinda play because we have chair umpires and line judges at the tournies I play sanctioned by the the ITF and USTA, which is good. But what I have come across is when a line judge has clearly missed a call and my opponent knows it and they don't say anything that makes me really pissed off. I try to be fair by letting my opponent playing the point over if the line judge makes a mistake and I see it.
J-man

Benchwarmer1 wrote:

to tell you the truth i don't face that many. but if there's a bad call i try to ignore it and say it was tough call
leftys_rock

i do face cheaters, but i "challenge" the call...i kind of argue it with them.....it doesnt get into my head actually.....i just replay the point....
Dragonlord

my coach said that if somebody made a bad call on purpose, then they will play worse because they will have the bad call on their conscience,
if after a while, I find out that they don’t play worse, I debate it with them and offer to replay the point, if they refuse, I focus on kicking their *** Very Happy
Benchwarmer1

you got a good idea ther dragonlord
Chelsey

There is no real reason to agrue and rant and rave over a cheated or blown line call because the majority of the the time it hurts you more in the long run. The delay from the agruement throws off your timing and you also have a tendency when you get worked up to over hit.
Benchwarmer1

so the adrenaline kicks in i guess
Chelsey

Yes, and alot of times that adrenline can pump you up so much you can start hitting so hard that you miss hit, hit long, or even into the net.
Benchwarmer1

so another thing that will normally kick in is anger (huge problem for me) How would you deal with anger?
Chelsey

It is normal to get upset if you are not playing up to par or you feel you are getting cheated by an opponent or a line judge makes a bad call. This is something you just learn to block out after time . That is why you see alot of the most calm pros when they were younger and juniors were hot heads they had not learned how to block out distractions yet. Can you imaging playing in front of the French Open Center Court Crowd against Gasquet and everyone is booing you how would that make you feel. Well it doesn't seem to bother the pros on the court very much at all because they have learned to block out those things. It is very hard it is something I am still working on myself.
Benchwarmer1

so, you mean move on from the mistake and consentrateon the next point, right
Chelsey

Yes, that is the best thing to do. If you think about it it is only one point in the whole match and usually one point doesn't determine the match. But if you get distraction and turn it into a bunch of lost points and then a game or two and then a break then there could go the match.
Benchwarmer1

ok, i guess i'll try that next time Very Happy
Adie

I really struggle with cheaters. The problem is with challenging the call is in highschool we play on the honor code and usually the coaches have at least 3 other matches going on at the same time so it is hard for them to be watching at all times. I have lost a match last year because of it I think. It was my fault really I let it get into my head because it was a very important break point which my opponent called out and I lost it. My mental game is not the tops.
leftys_rock

I now know why some people are irritated by players who take such a long time to serve. I was playing this girl on Tuesday, and when I saw her serve in warm up, she had such a huge serve(only if it went in). And so I had to be very prepared for the serves that were to be coming my way. And so, she would bounce the ball like five times, then twirl her racquet in her hand like 4 times, then bounce the ball again, check if the second ball was behind her, then toss(oops, toss wasn't right, better toss again), and then finally serve. And it was windy, so it would usually be a fault. So she would have to do it all over again. And I couldn't just be sitting there waiting for a double fault, I had to be mentally alert in case the ball went in, so it was a mentally very taxing day for me. I did win 6-2, 6-0, but I was so frustrated afterwards. I did keep my composure, but it just bothered me during the match.
Adie

I know what you mean Lefty. Those players drive me bananas.
Benchwarmer1

so you hate players like djokovic
Adie

I don't really hate any players on the tour. I just dislike the style they play. Like I said it drives my bananas.
Benchwarmer1

like my million posts in this thread, you can see that i have an anger problem
Adie

I kinda lose it to, but only when I feel I am being cheated it someway. If the player is better then me I don't get angry with myself. I take it as a learning experience. Yes I do hate hitting stupid shots and all and do alot of cursing under my breathe, but if my opponent is causing those errors with great shots then she deserves to win the match and usually i will tell her that at the end of the match.
Benchwarmer1

well, i have a different problem, i like feel so mad that i like almost go safin on my racquets, then find it in me to say to myself, "hey stupid, if you break that, you are too poor to afford another"
Adie

I know what you mean. I own two Head Flexpoints Prestige and I am very careful with them. So I stick to cursing under my breathe.
Benchwarmer1

sometimes i try to bcome gonzo and mit harder w/ more topspin, works sometimes, and if that don't work, instead of breaking the racquet, I just slap the stringbed. i don't know why I do that just habitual

...BTW do you have the mid or MP of the prestige?
Adie

I have the midplus.

When I get really mad I bang my head with the strings of the racquet. It usual doesn't do anything except give me a headache. Smile I was voted by my team last year as having the foulest mouth on the team and I was only a freshman and I beat ot 6 guys.
Benchwarmer1

so you're kind of like cartman from south park.....
Adie

I guess you could say that. My favorite saying is well i better not say it on here. Smile
Benchwarmer1

do you ever cuss at your opponent? Laughing
Adie

oh no just at me.
Benchwarmer1

oh, ok stupid question Very Happy Laughing
Adie

Not really, I have seen it done b4. I would just get really yelled at by my coach if I did something like that. It is bad enough what he says to me when I curse outloud on the court. That is why I try to keep it under my breath most of the time. Especially the F-word.
Hannah The Banana

Adie is most definetly the foulest mouth girl on the team. And I say a few explitives myself now and then, but not like her. Smile
pacomexican

people always cheat during highschool matches since theres no judges, theres really nothing to do about it, just keep your head in the game and let it go.
Dribbler

I try and not get all wrapped up in it. If I know my opponent is cheating I just try and focus even more on my game and not get too lost in what they are doing which could really affect my game in the wrong way.
