sharapova has a great serve. she gets so much extension on her serve and everything.
venus also has a nice serve. but sharapova's i think is just slightly better

Sharapova does get great extention on her serve, making it one of the best in women's tennis right now. But serena williams still has the best one. She wins more free points on her serve then anyone else, and sets it up perfectly to follow the point. I think one of the reasons she dominated for so long was because her serve was so good, and she was rarely broken.

Yeah, Davenport and Sharapova. It would be nice to see Sharapova using her serve more effectively by mixing her game with a little bit of serve-volley game.

I'd go with Davenport because its powerful and consistent. Rarely breaks down. I think Sharapova's serve is good but at times it didn't look as impressive as some people said it was.
I've heard Groenfield of Germany has a really powerful serve. Vaidisova also has a really good one.
Venus' first serve is awesome and the second sure got better this year.

yeah i've seen venus serve in an exbition (i know an exbition) but she aced serena like 6 times. she placed it well

I think Serena has the record but I wouldn't be surprised if Groenfeld had the fastest one last yr. I heard someone say she hit one around 128 mph.

I remember they had a similar picture of those two on Tennis Mag's 40 greatest players issue with Borg/McEnroe '80 Wimbledon final. Gotta love Mac sporting the 'fro too.

I'm almost positive venus williams has the record speed for a serve, at 127 mph. Maybe serena hit a 130, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't in.

Thanx Beachm for your compliment on my avatar ! Yeah, I think the era where Borg and McEnroe were playing in was a very exciting era. I haven't seen much of it because I was a bit too young at that time I think. But what I have seen it was a darn good and exciting tennis era! Especially because of the "classic" game that was played at that time.
As for creating an avatar: it is very simple. You just need a picture which complies with the following: no more than 80 pixels witdh and height and no more than 8 kb in file size. Then go to "profile" and select your pic. I hope you have a program/tool on your pc to re-size pictures because most pictures do not comply with the above description...If you have any problems re-sizeing the pic, then just mail it to me and I will re-size it.

Thanks for all the advice on the avatar stuff (although I'm still sort of confused and don't know if I could do it) babzzzz and J-man. I don't even have a personal computer but I go to a local library that has easy access to computers. Maybe I'll have to ask this guy I know who's smart when it comes to computer stuff.
One other thing, babzzzz I e-mailed you something on the tennis.com boards thing. I was curious/interested about the Netherlands (great country) and noticed that you live there. I thought you just didn't respond but then again I don't know if that e-mail feature there works. Because one other time, I tried to e-mail this guy who said he was from my home state and was looking for practice partners. So maybe that e-mail thing just doesn't work over there.

Beachm, I just checked my e-mail but there was no message from you in my inbox....

shes got a good serve but she needs to put more on it...right now the mph is pretty low because of her pectoral injury..it will get much better when she matures and when shes injury free.....and its boosted because she is so tall...venus's serve is good but i still think she can improve her second serve more....its a lot better than in the past but it can still be better...

her serve looked a lot stronger when she hadnt reinjured her pectoral muscle....at wimbledon she was hitting 100+ mph serves but in later tournaments, they were like 95s....

this is kind of off topic but on tv, the commentators keep saying that sharapova was naturally left handed but switched to right....why didnt she stay lefty??

since there are so few lefty women on the WTA, i would have stuck with lefty because it kind of puts you at an advantage....but sharapova sometimes uses a lefty forehand if shes in a desperate situation (she usually loses the point tho)...

all the other russian women like hate her....they dont think that shes russian.....but she still like throws left handed and stuff.....or maybe she was just more comfortable playing tennis with her right hand.....cuz im still way more comfortable playing basketball with my right hand even though im a lefty....and i throw and kick right handed too because of the way i learned it.....

Lefty is a huge advantage. The balls spin the other way, especially for serves.

i havent really put my spin serve into play at tournaments, but i use it in practice and i do see a curve....cuz wouldnt being lefty be a smart decision for sharapova?? cuz she could have been a lot better than she is right now.....

We have no idea. Maybe she WAS better righty and I don't think she would have been alot better lefty, considering she is 4 in the world with 1 slam title. She's not that tallented!

I just want to clear up this serve thing. Venus has the fatests serve in history (127mph) but Serena, at the tour championships last year hit a 130 mph but it was out. Groenfeld I believe hit a 127 mph serve so...

Even the fastest servers on the women's tour can't hit that many aces. I think it is because they aren't as tall as the men, so they can't create angles as well as the men.

sharapova said in an interview last year that she wouldnt admit that she was 6 foot 2...after she grew 2 inches over the summer...she says that she thinks that its too tall....so her bio says that shes six foot....whats wrong with being 6 foot 2?? theres not a problem with being tall....

Lindsey serve is in my opinion the best of the WTA circuit. Although Serena has a stronger serve Lindsey is way more consistent when her serve is on.
