Re: Australian Open Day 5
Go Maria!!!! at least push her to three sets
i hope youzhny can pull something off, and Serena and Petrova could go either way. I want Safin to win, but i'm thinking Roddick will

Safin-Roddick is going to be the match of the night. I'm picking Roddick in 4 sets.

Could you tell me about how the match was? Was it a great fight from her? I was eating dinner. I didn't see it.

It wasnt on a SINGLE livestream I could find, and ESPN is showing it taped right now.
I radio-ed the last set though, and it was good stuff. The scoreline tells it all really!

What a pleasant surprise... Serena beating Petrova is a big step for her... let's see if she could keep it up next round.

I stayed off line and watched it on ESPN. So it was like live to me. Such a streaky match. Serena was bad in the first set and Petrova was all over her.
Then the scoreline went in streaks....scoreline went like this:
Serena won 3 games to go up 3-0 in the second
Petrova won 5 games to go 5-3 and serving for the match!
Serena won the next 6 games (!!!!!) to win set #2 at 7-5 and go up 2-0 in the 3rd
Petrova won 2 games to tie
Serena won 3 games to go up 5-2
Petrova saved serve and Serena won 6-3
Serena was really great and I was rooting for her! She showed a lot of determination to win (btw I called this win! )
On the other hand, I just cannot stand Petrova. She is such an unlikeable character... yak! She was upset with herself and was doing all kinds of weird stuff... She is my least favorite of all players.

Serena's next opponet is my second least favorite: Jelena Jankovic... can't stand her.... but her game is much better that Petrova and I think that she will prevail again against Serena, just like she did at the USO....
... second night in a row I woke up at 4am! gotta do sothing about this... going back to sleep!

Fantastic win for Serena Who would have thought this time last week she was losing in the QF of Hobart to Sybille Bammer
She has always been one of my faves when she was playing, and she's really the only one on tour I would bother rooting for this year aswell.

Safin really started to annoy me in the fourth. He started complaining about anything and everything. He was constantly yelling at the chair, he acted like both the chair and the linespeople were out to get him and it got on my nerves. Roddick was unusually professional. I can only remember once when he said anything to the chair at all. Roddick was controling that backhand so well in that match. His backhand down the line was giving Safin a lot of problems. I do think Roddick will get to the semi's easily now.

Great win for Roddick. From what you guys are saying, Roddick was actually hurting Safin more with his backhand than Safin was doing to Roddick (with his backhand). Excellent confidence booster for Roddick (if he didn't have enough already by beating Federer)... a very dangerous player in the draw right now.

Gasquet ousts Monfils in four
by Jennifer Witham
Friday, 19 January, 2007
Richard Gasquet has ended the winning run of rising star and compatriot Gael Monfils in a tumultuous four-set encounter on Vodafone Arena, 6-0 4-6 7-5 6-3.
Monfils was fast becoming a crowd favourite at Melbourne Park with his unpredictable antics and explosive forehand after he dumped 2006 finalist Marcos Baghdatis out of contention earlier in the week.
Gasquet, who is the No.18 seed for Australian Open 2007, was clinical in the first set as he closed out the opener in only 20 minutes.
Monfils had is serve broken by Gasquet six tmes and also struggled when receiving, winning just 26 per cent of points.
Both players took injury time-outs late in the match - Monfils for a back complaint and Gasquet for an arm issue - but the elder of the two Frenchmen in Gasquet blew his younger countryman away in the final set to claim entry into the fourth round in just over two and a half hours.
Monfils has posted a career-best result for the Australian Open, having previously only made it to the second round.
Gasquet will now face Spaniard Tommy Robredo in the round of 16, with the winner of that match a strong chance to meet world No.1 Roger Federer in the quarterfinals.

That's wonderful... Gasquet is a talented player who is definitely trying to rebound from last year, which was slightly below expectations as a whole. He'll have a tough match vs. Robredo, though....

Good for Gasquet! I love how we have the older matchup - roddick-safin and others- and then the young guns matching up - Monfils- Baghdatis, Gasquet-Monfils.
I'm excited for the next era of tennis, did anyone see highlights from the Monfils-baggy match, Gael was incredible!
Gasquet could challenge Fed in the quarters.

Yes, Monfils is very athletic... a few years ago, he nearly won himself the Grand Slam in the juniors, but lost early at the US Open.
Gasquet can definitely challenge Federer... he has beaten him before.

Yep I am a Baghdatis fan but Monfils was incredible. He is such a fun to watch. He was having fun out there. He is also extreemely athletic... He reminds me of a couple of my friends whom we play basketball pick-up games. Monfils is now definitely one of my favorite young guns. The others I like are Djorkovic and Gasquet.

Yes Monfils is extremely athetic. He really outclassed Baghdatis in that department. It's a shame he couldn't continue his run though.
