Australian Open - Day 1Order of Play
http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/scores/schedule/index.html
I really hope they show Serena's match. I want to see her form.

The schedule shows what a big impact Serena left on the game during her dominance. Despite being ranked so low, despite playing so little last year, despite her poor showing last year at the AO, she is still on Rod Laver arena. I'm sure they'll broadcast the match (after all, it's a night match).

I'm only watching the night matches so I am really glad Serena's match is the first of the night session. Not too interested in any of the other night matches though.

Of course, who wouldn't put a 7 time grand slam champion on the largest court? Although she hasn't played all that much, she's still the most successful active player around. And she won this only 2 years ago, so I expected them to put her on RLA.

Yes Serena is still a huge star wherever she plays, especially in Melbourne. Before her loss there last year, she haden't lost in Melbourne since 2001. TBH I wouldn't bet against another huge run this year, we never know what she will do. Her 2005 win was a huge surprise.

|
You're all correct Serena... I'm saying though, based strictly on her past year's results, she deserves Court 3 at most. (not even Margaret Court Arena). Oh well, that's what you get if your name's Serena Williams....
Personally, I don't predict her to go farther than round three/four....

Dave, will that be in the morning for you (the night matches?)
I would love to stay up till 3 and start watching, but that is just crazy cus I have school the next day. Actually, I think I'll go to bed early and get up super early and watch it...

Sharapova-Pin better not be a night match!

The defending champions of the singles events Amelie Mauresmo and Roger Federer will open up the tournament.
I am looking forward to seeing Serena play. The only other night match I assume they would show is Djokovic v Massu.

Yeah so I assume they will stay on Laver for the whole night session....it would be very unfair if they showed both men's matches and would probably lead me to complain!

Tsonga is quite talented. He has a big serve and a good forehand. Mcenroe was listing all the injury's he has had in his career (he is only 21).

Many of the lower ranked players are missing the fitness... it's not that they're less talented, it's that they don't have the fitness to last five sets. That's too bad though, how many injuries he has (I didn't hear how many, but it sounds like a lot).

he has had half a dozen at least. a knee injury, he had some problem with his back, I felt so sorry for him listening to all of that. Who knows if he could be ranked a lot higher than he is if it wasn't for all those injuries.
Roddick is serving for the third set.

I disagree. Losing serve that many times is not at all common for him. Maybe once in the first while he trys to find his groove, but he usually destroys him opponent in the last two sets. I wonder if skipping Doha is his problem....

I doubt skipping Doha was Federer's problem. I think he just had a bit of early season rust that everyone has. Federer has only played Doha 3 times before, and has won the A.Open without playing Doha. Federer also had a long week at Kooyong aswell, so I don't think his little blip can be blamed on the fact he didn't play Doha. It isn't one of his 'regular' tournaments either.

There aren't many surprises in the opening day. Mara Santangelo and Serena Williams were awful in the opening stages of their match, but Santangelo was just horrible and gave Serena the set .In the second set, Serena played well and made some great runs, so hopefully she can keep that type of form up. She faces veteran Anne Kremer, who upset Michaella Krajicek.
Safin v Becker was a great match from start to finish. I really like Becker's game and Safin also produced his stunning form. Really hugh quality match with a good result in Safin going through. If he keeps this up then he could have a good chance against Roddick in Round 3, as Roddick was awful today. I am pleased for Fish aswell, great win for him. He has started the year well with a SF in Auckland last week. Hopefully he can have a good comeback to the top this year.
Most of the big names are still in though, and successful starts for the defending champions.

Good win for Serena. I hope she can continue to stay commited throughout the year. Fish also had a great win. Hopefully they will air his match at 3 PM today (Taped matches). Querry is making some nice progress. Taking out Acausso a tough customer. Really taking it to him in the last 2 sets. He looked frizzled after the first set lost. But bounced back nicely.

Every odd year seems to be a good one for Safin, so I think he has a chance to do well here, if the pattern continues. Becker is quite good. He must have extra confidence now when he plays, since beat Andre in his last match.
Serena will improve throughout the tournament. Her learning curve will be much steeper than most others. The trouble for her, though, will be managing to get out of the early rounds. If she can do so, she has a good chance of going deep.

To be honest, I wasn't really sure about that match, I was thinking "Hmm, Kirilenko isn't playing that good, but Sprem isn't either and she's really on and off, but Sprem hit's pretty big, so i'll go for her."

Sharapova has much better results though. I prefer results over looks, and plus, i'm a girl, I don't care how she looks, as long as she plays good tennis, it's good, and Kirilenko isn't playing good right now.
