ATP DoublesI have a question? Is the ATP's new doubles promotions working? I'm not sure they are. The below picture says the entire story about doubles support:
The double's final at Barcelona
The spectator number is quite weak, to say the least....

the only one where there really were a lot of people was the AO mens doubles final where the people stayed to watch doubles after the womens final failed to produce....

Yes. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that if the women's final was something more, the men's doubles final would have been played in front of empty stands.

i guess bob, mike, martin, and leander have to thank JHH for quitting in the womens final to make a pretty full house for them....

Yes. Unfortunately, it probably never got to many North American channels.

i did get it on ESPN2 that day, but otherwise, i have not seen ANY doubles coverage on tv......

Yes....it's rare in Canada to get singles matches, not to mention doubles....

I don't really like the doubles changes. It is unfair to all the doubles players that they don't get to play a full match anymore. I don't really think it has made doubles more popular. Doubles is a very good game, alot of the time better than Singles. They just need to put Doubles on main show courts more often, and the doubles players need to become more open to the public...

but you have to remeber that doubles doesn't attract much at GS ethier. so what makes you think that it will attract here at a smaller tournment?

If doubles matches are put on the show courts more often at every tournament, then people will begin to take more notice and realise that Doubles is actually very exciting to watch. Even if it is a full best of 3 set match, it won't take as long as a Singles match. Doubles is generally quicker than Singles because of the shorter points...

very true. but i think one disadvantage the doubles has is it usually starts later then singles (usually afte a singles match). and people want to go home. so they don't stay and watch.
plus not all the big name players are playing doubles

Yes. It's actually quite complicatedin how we can improve double's popularity. Perhaps schedualing matches during 'prime' time would work, but that will never happen because people come to see singles. They need to make like a special package combining singles and doubles in one night or something like that.

That is the problem: the big names. Most tennis fans consider big names to be Nadal and Federer. If the Bryans, or Jonas Bjorkman became known as big names then doubles would be more popular. The top doubles players need to be more accessible to the public (interviews, other events off-court), then they would become more known to the public...
|

Yes. I think doubles might become more accessible to the public when the Tennis Channel expands. I think when it becomes international, doubles matches can be shown to people all over the world, and it can become a big-time sport.

It seems they show the least amount of tennis as possible. I understand it might not be as popular as basketball or hockey or football, but they always schedule it for at 12:30 at night or afternoon, both horrible times. So with limited singles matches they would probably never show doubles, except if really big names are playing, like the williams sisters.

Yes. For the AO men's final, they didn't even have a live feed. They (TSN) only showed it eight hours after it had happened and they cut out the first five games of the third set as well. I remember they once didn't show tennis, and instead played something like the International ArmWrestling Championships (and I'm being serious about that).

they have competions for arm wrestling? it's not even a sport! . TTC does a good job for doubles. at Las Vegas you were seeing doubles almost as much as singles.
|

They do have compitions in arm wrestling, as they do in 'Rock, Paper, Scissors'. TTC probably good....just it's not international.

Yes, i will cherish the day it goes international. xdoublea we should email the tennis channel people and tell them there would be demand in Canada
|

It would be nice if we could....unfortunately, I'm sure it has to do with all contracts with satellite and cable companies. I'm sure they would love to become international. I think we have to wait another few years (well, of course, there's something called illegal satellite feeding...).

It is also not readily available in the states. At home in Illinois we don't have it.

Yes. Apparently, there's a 'World Championship' or something like that. Well, I guess anything can be put on sports channels if poker and the spelling bee make it on....

Hey, I like watching spelling bees okay! Lol but how would you come across this illegal satellite feed lol

I don't have satellite, only cable. I know someone (who will name anonymous) who has a feed of Tennis Channel, though.

oooohh. a game of luck, anyone of us could win that, they show that and not tennis, what a shame
|
x.doublea

Well, they didn't show rock, papers, scissors on TV, but they did show the international arm wrestling competition at the same time a Masters Series was on.
|

that's a really weird, many people can get huge and strong enough to arm wrestle, but it takes a different kind of skill to play tennis
(I tried to sound like a commercial, did it work?)

Yes, you did. However, what you say is the truth.

Is that a joke???? Or is Rock, Paper, Scissors have a championship? In my opinion that would be ridiculous
|
x.doublea

Yes. And, sadly, TSN often broadcasts men carrying tires and trucks in favour of tennis.

We have that junk on ESPN as well. It is called the Worlds Strongest Man Contest or something like that. Where these HUGE guys carry boulders and lift truck tires. It's so stupid to me.
|
Benchwarmer1
|
Why do they even show these people, they should put that kind of stuff on a channel that doesn't show sports just competitions (oh yeah, they don't have to do all of that we have machines now)
|

In my opinion that stuff can even be put on the Outdoor life network. If anyone wants to see a HUGE lumberjack type of a man lift a carry a tree trunk across afield they must like the outdoors.

yes you're absolutely right
