I've seen it. I acutally like it, there is a point behind it. Song is cheesy, but the point that it is trying to make is nice. Better than any of those Canon Powershot ads or Sportscenter.

I like it too! What's there not to like? She is pretty!

I like how it's trying to make the point that she's not just a "pretty girl". Of course, some may disagree, but still, at least no acting involved(whew).
J-man
It is a good point but I'm just going to find it annoying the song and everything.
You going to hear it a million times during a Sharapova match don't tell me it's not going to get on your nerves a bit
leftys_rock
Of course. First time is always interesting though. When it gets old, i'll yell at it.

I think all the fuss about her is because she is a 'pretty girl'. If people didn't think she was good looking, she wouldn't have as many fans. Her tennis is the same as most of the others, she's nothing special. It's just 'cause many think she is the new Kournikova, but the improved one because she won Wimbledon. Since she won Wimbledon, she has just been the average top 10 player. Too many people became her fan because they admire her for winning Wimbledon aged 17 and the whole being without her mum story. There are thousands others like her, and some with worse upbringings.

Of course. All the photo shoots, money, magazine covers, appearances on multiple shows came with the Wimbledon title. And I think it's too bad that all this success came to her so early because she can't really make it through the draw quietly anymore and is a favorite at almost all the tournaments and etc. If all the sucess didn't come already, I think that she would be more than just "Semipova" right now.
Rattler
I laughed at it, when I saw the Brother's Mac in the booth singing.
It'll get old as the tourney goes on and I've seen it 100X...unlike the one with Roddick getting bopped on the head with the trophy in the over-head compartment on the plane.
I saw the Roddick vs. Pong one today....eh.

I think she was extremely lucky with her draw at Wimbledon (not taking anything away from her win). Since then though, it has been proved multiple times that she is not the best in the world and there are always players that are better than her. All of her media attention is because she is pretty and because she won Wimbledon. Now, she hasen't won anything and continues to get all this attention because she is a 'pretty girl'. I'm not sure the media attention has affected her game though. Even if she could go through the draws' quietly, I don't think she would have achieved anymore than she has.

Yes but she is always a contender in tournments and is in the Top 10. I think she would media attenion for that

Mauresmo is always a contender for tournaments and the World No.1 yet she doesn't get half the media attention Sharapova gets, similiar things can be said for Henin, Clijsters, Dementieva, Davenport, or Kuznetsova. Take away her looks and people couldn't care less about her, she would just be another semi-successful Russian. Her game is not any better than Kuznetsova's or Dementieva's yet she is the Grand Slam favorite. All because she is the better looker.

Her "mental toughness" has not been anywhere as good as people have said it was. I think that may have started at AO 05, because she could possibly have had a shot at that title if she hadn't lost that match. But this year, 5-1 second set vs. Golovin at Nasdaq, could have closed it out, 5-1 third set vs. Safina, lost the match, served for the first set vs. JHH at Dubai, 1-5 in SF's(with the one coming from her surprise Wimbledon, after the rain break vs. Davenport). Not as mentally tough as commentators have proclaimed. When she won Wimbledon, she didn't have to face one of the retrievers, players with touch, etc. Among power players, she is one of the best, but when she has to play one of the big 3(Mauresmo, Henin, Clijsters), she gets exposed. But actually, when compared to Wimbledon 04, I think she has gotten somewhat better, but the top of the field has gotten A LOT better, so she needs to make more advancements with her game. She is trying to add variety to her game, but I don't think this is going to work after all. She needs to use her power in the right ways, not go for it every shot, have patience, and anticipate better. At the Open, she will either face Mauresmo or JHH in the semis, should the draw work out, so we'll see whether she can show that she is not just a "pretty girl".

She won Wimbledon at the weakest time in women's tennis. JHH and Clijsters were out. Venus was dreadful. Serena scraped her way through to the final and was a disaster in the final. Davenport's confidence was at a career-low. You say among power players she is one of the best, but she is not the best. Davenport, Kuznetsova, Serena and Venus I would say are better than her. The only reason she gets all the media attention is because she is the pretty one. I don't think her mental toughness has been affected much. I just think she is a bit shocked at what has happened to her career. In 2004 when she was young, everything was going her way (Wimbledon, WTA Champs). Then all of a sudden JHH, Clijsters stormed back, Lindsay double-bageled her, Venus and Serena showed glimpses of their very best. Sharapova had come to the top so early but everyone else came back in 2005 and she couldn't impose her game as much.
leftys_rock
I still say that among power players, she still is a major force. Eh, Kuznetsova, she's like a mix of power player and Clijsters. But I honestly hadn't really counted her as one of those, big forehand, backhand players. But right now, yes, Maria is the best "power player". It's kind of hard to compare the big power hitters because at their best...yes, I have no doubt that they are better than Sharapova, but will their best ever come back? It's a bit tough to compare them at their best because Davenport, WS are obviously not there. You see, when we say, Venus, Serena, Lindsay, Svetlana are all better than Maria, it's a little iffy because when you look at it right now, duh, they're not at their best, but I don't think we would get an accurate comparison anymore as I have doubts that Venus, Serena, and Lindsay will ever be at their true best again. No, Maria may not be the best power player, but she is up there somewhere.

I do think you give Sharapova's game too much credit. Even among power players she has one of the uglier, one-dimensional games. The Williams, Davenport, Seles, and Graf are the best examples of real, multi-dimensional power games. Even in todays game it is normally Sharapova's mental game that pulls her through matches. What truly seperates her game from Ivanovic or Vaidisova? Her winnign usually comes from out fighting her opponent. Game wise I would say she is in the 8-15 ranking range, her "win or die trying" attitude is what takes her the next step. She has little to offer and I agree with Dave, even in todays game her style of power play is nothing special.
leftys_rock
When i'm saying best in power players, it's including the mental toughness too. So like when for example, Sharapova has a winning record over Davenport, Sharapova by no means plays better than Davenport, but the intensity and fight is what makes her a "top" player. And yes, her game may be in the as you say 8-15 ranking range, but it is the fight that brings the wins. And among power players a major force, not gamewise, but with the mentality she takes to the matches against players who are better game-wise than her.
*Sorry, my debating is awful, I really need to go to debate class to learn how to keep a discussion like this going. I think I detract from the post too much.

yes, that was my point. she has nothing special about her game, she is relatively mediocre. the thing between her ears is what makes her anything worth taking notice of. game wise I would pick Dementieva, Kuznetsova, or Myskina to beat her on any surface.
