Bjorkman is of course losing. I can't stand him. He is great is doubles, but I don't see why he keeps playing singles.

A rather lucky semifinal appearance at Wimbledon always keeps you going....

I think Bjorkman is great at singles, he brings variety to the game, and he should keep playing singles. It is an achievement for him to still be playing top level singles and doubles every week at this age. He is clearly fit enough. He has a nice all-around game and comes into the net alot. I think he is fun to watch. He is still getting success out of it and it gives him more matches. Navratilova played singles in 04 and 05 knowing that she wouldn't get far, but she did it to give her practice for her doubles campaigns.
He really deserved his Wimbledon SF with gutsy wins over Mirnyi and Stepanek. Only until last September he still held a singles title.

his semi at Wimby is one of the very, very few things in singles that have been note worthy in years. even when he got there the semi was shameful. the score of that match was one of a boring first round, not the should be exciting match of a Slam semi. he was greatly aided by upsets. he should not have been in there.
Makira is through! 4-6 6-3 6-4.
Roddick is serving for the first set, 5-3. Schiavone is down a set to Safarova. Udomchoke upset Ferrero. Fish is beating Mahut two sets to none.
Hingis/Kuzy are starting their doubles match now. I think they could go far. Both are excellent doubles player. I will be routing for them to win the doubles title.

Andre talked on ESPN. he is also commenting on the Roddick match. even though we missed half of the third set because of it, it was nice to see him again.

It was nice to see Andrei again. He is such a pleasant personality to listen to. And he had some good advice about Roddick's game.
Federer also spoke and him and Agassi had a little conversation. Andrei told Federer and he will win 17 and a half Grand Slams . Federer said that he is pacing himself and will play less tennis from now on with his goal to peak at the right times. He played 97 matches last year which was too many. His ultimate goal is to prolong his carreer!! It is obvious that he is going after Sampras record. The way things look, he will probably get it done. Andrei said that we are watching history in the making. I never thought of it this way, but it is probably true.

Serena is playing really bad but her opponent is not that good either...She will probably prevail
Going to bed...

There have been many thrashings in a Wimbledon semi, even the final. He was going up against Federer! Just because he was thrashed, you can't say he didn't deserve to be there. He played really well against Mirnyi, and the Stepanek match was fantastic. I'm not sure Blake or Stepanek would have done alot more had they reached the SF.
That run at Wimbledon is one of the many things he has achieved in singles. His US Open SF was a good run aswell and the match was huge, he even had chances to make the final! He is a former world number 4 and a top player for many years. He has achieved alot more in singles than most people on the tour have.

Mirnyi had played quite a few (can't remember the exact number) of five setters at Wimby that year, he was dead tired. I can know Blake or Stepanek would have done better. That match was horrible, Federer or not.
I never said he was lacking results in his career, in my post I said many years. His normal Slam now consists of reaching the second round. Why not save himself a match and just play doubles? Unless the stars aline and upsets allow him to get a pathetically simple draw thanks to upsets like at at Wimby, he is not going to make it to the second week again.

Wow Monfils beat Baggy in 4 yesterday.

I knew that the bag man would be a disspointment this AO

Has anyone have any idea what matches will be shown today at 3:30 PM on ESPN 2?? It's taped and I am wondering if it is Baghdatis Monfils. I really want to see that match.

Leading up to their 4th round match, Bjorkman and Mirnyi had both played one 5-set match each and had spent similar amounts of time on court. You can't blame Mirnyi's loss on being tired, especially since Bjorkman is 5 years older than him. By the time Bjorkman had reached the SF, he had played 2 consecutive 5-setters (3 in all) plus 4 doubles matches. I think that is huge from someone 34 years of age. Had Blake, Mirnyi or Stepanek reached the semis, they would have done little or nothing more than Bjorkman did. It would still have been an absolute thrashing. Federer was on fire that day. Bjorkman, however, was the one who deserved to be there. He proved he couls still play great singles at his age.
Having reached a Grand Slam SF and still contending for ATP titles, why should Bjorkman stop playing singles? He clearly trains very hard and is in great shape, so why should he just play doubles? He has a decent ranking and can still beat alot of players out there, so there is no reason he should stick to doubles. As long as he believes he can win, there are still chances for him. He got thumped by Federer, so has everyone else on the tour.

Wow dav6789, you're avatar brought back memories of th e'94 Wimbly final...I sitting near the court entrance, on of my best memories of Wimbly.
Anywho..I think Monfils is going to be in the top 10 within a year...Baggy is no slouch; however, like Nalbandian he needs to watch his weight and conditioning.
Serena needs to drop about 20 pounds, before she'll be a serious threat again.
Kinda surprised at the Safin score...almost as much as Murray's first match...I still feel that Safin has the best chance to knock-off Federer on hard courts..
Speaking of Fed, his appearence last night with Andre seemed really genuine...some may regard him as arrogant, but that conversation last night did not seem insincere at all...
...Andre's comments about Andy's game were spot on as well..
Looking forward to the Roddick-Safin match.

Yep! The pictures of Navratilova and Martinez are both from that match. Martinez surprisingly winning her only Slam on grass.

Got up early and watched the last 2 1/2 sets of the Baghdatis match. Monfils was playing really great tennis. Baggy was not in it, except for a few moments in the third set.
Here is a few parts, but you need to read the whole thing...
Q. Do you feel that there's pressure on you to try and live up to what you achieved last year?
MARCOS BAGHDATIS: Yeah. Yeah, there's a lot of pressure. Not by media or stuff, it's more like my group and stuff. I feel a bit of pressure from them.
My father is here. You know, that changes things. I will just try to deal with it and try to speak to them and find a way.
Q. You say that the pressure is coming from inside your team. Why is that?
MARCOS BAGHDATIS: I don't know, changes. A lot of changes have happened. I mean, I don't feel very good. Just don't feel very good with my father is here, my brother is here, everybody is here.
It's not like a normal tournament for me, and that's all. It's like a different tournament and I'm not used to it. I have to just find my way.
Q. Does your father think he knows a lot about tennis?
MARCOS BAGHDATIS: He does. He does, yeah. He's the one who brought me here, so he does.
Q. Is that a problem sometimes?
MARCOS BAGHDATIS: Problem, no, it's not a problem. You know, it's nothing against my father, it's just -- it's nothing on court. It's nothing I'm watching him. He's here. It's just off the court it's not the same. I don't have the same routines with my coach and stuff.
It's not in the court, it's just out of the court. I'm not happy. I'm not myself, so that's all.

That's a very intresting interview. Oddly enough he had a g,irlfriendwhen he made his run here at the open. Maybe he is alittle depressed without one.

I can't believe Baghdatis lost to Monfils, who is, by all means, a talented player. Too bad he's having some troubles outside of the court....

Well Martinez did give Steffi a good run for her money in the '93 Wimbley Semis, but it was a surprising win (in '94) for Martinez. I just remember Martina getting passed and passed at the net. Martinez was amazing that day.

I wasn't there (I was only 2 ), but, from what I have read in the past, Martinez's passing shots were perfect. Apparently, Navratilova had the whole "Focus on the wallpaper" talk from Billy Jean King. Too bad Navratilova didn't have that final hoorah in singles (her recent singles entries in Wimbledon shouldn't count)... but that must have been the best day of Martinez's life....
dav6789
In 2001, Navratilova brought that final up again and said she was annoyed with Martinez and felt she didn't deserve the title because she kind of stopped working hard. Moya did the same after he won the French Open.
