Annoying Coach! This season I really wanted to play singles for my school, and so I've been training so hard, way harder than anyone else on my team, staying later after practice, going on weekends and always having a positive attitude. Also, I've played my friends on the team and I can beat them all but she never lets us play singles matches when she can watch us because of limited court time. (we only have 3 courts for 16 kids)
So I asked her today if she had decided on who would play which position. She said I would have to wait till next week, but that I was for sure playing doubles. I was really mad, because she knows nothing about tennis (she didnt know why a spin serve would be beneficial?!!!) I just want to know what to say to her to help her change her mind cus I really really really want to play singles but I want to say it in a respectful way.

I get annoyed when that happens to; when the coach tries to coach you while she has no idea what's happening. I'm not sure what you can say to change her mind. Perhaps you can ask her to give you a challenge or something, but I think the only way you can make her give you a singles spot is by proving yourself.

I really want to prove myself, but we never get to play singles matches, and I hate playing doubles. My net game is really bad. I have proved myself to my friends (pretty much all the guys on the team are my friends) so I dont know what to do. I guess I could ask if I could challenge it. She may think I'd be better at doubles tho because I'm 6'4''

Wow, you're 6'4"? Perhaps you can tell her than many of the top players, such as Andy Roddick and Marat Safin, are in the height range of 6'3" and 6'4". If she doesn't know who they are, than I'm speechless.

yes, we had the same courts:kids ratio problem during tryouts.......72 kids for 5 courts... .....our coach cut it down to 25 and 6 courts now.....but does your coach have a challenge system? we have a challenge ladder system that lower ranked people can challenge higher ranked people in singles OR doubles.....ask your coach to make one of those....

No she doesnt, cus at my school tennis is such a secondary sport after track and cross-country skiing (I won ofsaa gold ya!!!) so they really dont put that much work into it, they just pick their favorites to play singles or whatever. I could mention it to them tho, good idea.

So you're a skiier as well? Congratulations on your OFSAA gold, as it's the biggest school event in Ontario. After thinking about it, perhaps you can treat these doubles matches as a way to improve your volleys- this might impress your coach and help you develop into a better all-court singles player.

Thanks (for the congrats.) Yes I love XC skiing, not as much as tennis of course. Well, I talked to my coach and it turns out she thought I really WANTED to play doubles, but I told her what my wishes were, and she said I will probably be playing singles.

So your teacher is understandable. It never hurts to just ask. Well, everyone's happy now.

Good Luck Stevos. I hope you have a great season ahead.

Thanks! Sadly, our season is quite short, with a lot of training, then we have 2 tournaments and thats it! How I wish I lived in the US sometimes. But once I am a senior I will have the possibility to play at OFSAA, the all-province competition.

I checked the website out, and if you make it, you actually get to play at the Rexall Centre! I hope you make it.

Wow! That would be awesome, I wonder if they would let the players play on centre court! But im in grade 10 so next years will be my chance. Just so everyone knows, the rexall centre is where rogers cup is played.

I'm playing U-16, so unfortunately, I won't be elegible to try. We can keep our fingers crossed, though.

Yes. I'll be looking forwards in trying to make it in one-to-two years. I ran in the Midgit OFSAA Cross Country race. I didn't get your skiing results, though, as I placed in the mid 150s, which is OK.

Thats still really good! Its very competitive. Just so you know, I myself didnt win the individual gold, our team did. I came in 42 I think, but my friend came first! My other friend (a girl) came third. Our combined team won the gold, while our Junior boys team got silver and our junior girls team got gold.

Well, 42nd in the province isn't too modest. Your school must be very good at skiining. We have a skiier in Grade 12 who's excellent- he finished third at the OFSAA alpine skiining race, but he's something like national champion.

I got the singles position! Im really happy now, and I'm going to be playing #1 singles for our team. I guess my little talk with her worked.

That's great! Asking never hurts. I hope you can keep this up, and I might even see your name on the OFSAA tennis championship list soon!
