Agassi Pulls out of Montreal

Agassi withdraws from Canadian Masters

TORONTO, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Andre Agassi has withdrawn from next week's Canadian Open, organisers said on Friday.

Three-times winner of the Masters event and runner-up last year in Montreal, the tournament was to be Agassi's final appearance in Canada before the eight-times grand slam retires at the U.S. Open.

"I regret to inform Toronto that I will not be playing in the Rogers Cup," Agassi said in a statement. "I have many great memories in Canada and wish you continued success. It's a fantastic tournament."

No official reason was given for Agassi's decision to pull out of the event, which begins on Monday.

"He was a finalist last year in Montreal and was not able to compete the following week in Cincinnati," said tournament director Grant Connell. "This year he decided to switch events.

"We are disappointed that he will not be able to play one last time in Toronto but understand his situation."

Nine of the world's top 10 players will be in the Canadian draw, including world number one Roger Federer and French Open champion Rafael Nadal.

Not looking good for the USO, but best of luck Andre!

I wonder why he pulled out?

I was very suprised on this one, but I have two ideas why he pulled out. 1. Maybe he's injured and doesn't want to take a chance when obviously the Open is his last tourney. 2. He probably doesn't want to play both TMS back to back (which again is the most assinine scheduling job, great job tennis) and then burn himself out if he actually won a bunch of matches over those 2 wks. He probably wants to play in front of the fans in Cincy a bit more than in Canada. Still, Agassi's Open chances have taken a major hit the past 2 wks. and he might not be around after the 1st few rds. Hate to say it but if he gets a really tough draw, who knows he might be gone much quicker than we think.

This is making a Sampras-like exit even more unlikely for Agassi. However, Sampras was only 3-3 in US Summer Hardcourt matches before winning the US Open in 2002. Agassi is 2-2 so far, but it is unlikely he will go into the 2nd week. We will see!

Agassi's got his work really cut out for him, but the crowd will really be with him. A small early exit would be such a pity. Crying or Very sad
