Tier 2 Indoor event on the WTA tour. Dementieva and Petrova are the top seeds, followed by Schnyder and Safina. It's usually has the poorest draws, but it is the start of the indoor season. Clijsters won it last year but is injured. Groenefeld was the runner-up last year and is the 7th seed.

I picked Schnyder for this tournament because she seems to do very well in these indoor events. I don't expect her to win it, but I am certain she will get some points. Dementieva and Petrova are to unpredictable for my liking. Chanda Rubin won her first match in over a year against Martina Muller and now faces Schnyder. Pierce and Groenefeld have already been upset. The best match should be Venus Williams v Ana Ivanovic later on.

great to hear about Chanda, she played very well against Vaidisova at the USO.

Safina is my pick, she has the game to do well indoors.

She has always been a good top player but never quite reached the very elite. If it wasen't for all her injuries she could have had a much better career so far. Unfortunately her career has been played in chunks rather than continuosly due to injuries. She had a great 1996 when she was no.6 in the world and had that marathon against Sanchez-Vicario. She had a good 2002/2003 aswell. At least she has a win now, she has to start somewhere. She is 30 now, so there is still a bit more time for her if she wants to play.

Didn't Rubin nearly beat Seles once at the AO semifinals?

Yes, that was in 1996. Seles won 6-7 6-1 7-5.

Why even bother to give Petrova a seed??? Rolling Eyes I picked Demtevia. But Venus and Ivanovic will be threats. I'm gald Chinda Rubin is getting back in the swing of things. She's a good player, but is very rusty

VENUS! Very Happy Ivanovic does NOT match up well with the williams at all. Poor girl...

My pick Schnyder still playing great, has the easiest draw ever... to the semis at least!
